Interview with Ashlyn Macnamara, Author of Destined for a King
Tell us a little bit about your new release, Destined for a King.
It’s the first book of a new fantasy romance series involving a group of apparent brigands that refer to themselves as the Bastard Brotherhood. However, appearances are often deceiving, and the members of the Brotherhood might not be bastards—or even all brothers. While each book will feature a new romantic pairing, there is an over-arcing story to the four books, so not everything will be tied up in a bow at the end of book one.
Who is your favorite couple from literature?
I can’t pick just one. I have a soft spot for Lizzie and Darcy. I’m also quite partial to Eowyn and Faramir—even though they didn’t get much screen time in the books (and even less in the movies), they get the only on-screen romantic kiss in The Lord of the Rings.
What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?
Middle-earth, hands down. I used to read The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion every year. I may have pretended, while doing so, that I was an elf in Rivendell studying actual history. Although if I really lived in Middle-earth, I’d probably like to be a Rider of Rohan.
If you could invent anything, what would it be?
Something that could translate my direct thoughts into my word processor so I could skip the whole typing thing. And failing that, a Roomba that cooks as well as cleans—and does laundry.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
The Lord of the Rings—there’s a shocker, right? I only read it every year.
Pride and Prejudice—Jane Austen is such a master of subtle snark.
There’s a pair of—I suppose they’re YA fantasy—books by Jane Yolen called Sister Light, Sister Dark, and White Jenna that I just ripped through. I stayed up all night reading them, which is something I don’t often do. I think the fact of staying up all night reading qualifies these for my list.
The Chronicles of Prydain—this is a series of five middle-grade books that I first read in elementary school. And then I read them and re-read them and I bought them to read again as an adult. I consider this series to be my gateway drug into fantasy.
And I’m going to have to put the Harry Potter series on this list, as well. Those books are directly responsible for me taking up my virtual pen and writing my own stories in the form of fanfiction.
What scene in Destined for a King was your favorite to write?
Goodness, it’s hard to pick one. I drafted half the book in three weeks, it was all so there for me. Writing the opening sequence was a great deal of fun, though. Having my heroine shoot the hero, for starters, the moment where he realizes the “boy” who shot him is actually the woman he’s been having visions of, the verbal barbs they shoot at each other just before he succumbs to his wound and passes out in the middle of negotiating his take-over. That was all fun to write.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
I went to high school with a girl who was fond of saying, “The world is a figment of your imagination and you are a figment of its.” I’m still trying to figure out what that means, but it sounds good.
But I’m also partial to: “What do we live for but to make sport of our neighbors and laugh at them in our turn?”

About The Book
Dr. Iris Ballard’s glory days are behind her, so when Luke Hudson, her former FBI partner and onetime lover, asks for help constructing a psychological profile of an elusive serial killer who murders single mothers and dumps their bodies in the woods, Iris turns him away. She just wants to be left alone with her infomercials, her German Shepherd, and her vodka. That is, until she gets a peek at the case files.
The media has dubbed him “the Woodsman.” But after Iris learns the sickening details held back from the press, and as she sets foot onto the scene of his latest crime, she assembles a portrait of a more complicated, enigmatic, meticulous man. Control is his motivation. He thrives on it. Soon he even tries to manipulate the investigation by contacting Iris, hoping to rattle the woman he considers an intellectual equal.
The game is on. Iris thinks she has a read on her target, enough to push his buttons, to make him lose control. But when the Woodsman gains the upper hand, Iris faces the most painful reckoning of all—with her own violent past.

Interview with Cheryl F.M., Author of Bad For Me
Tell us a little bit about your new release, Bad for Me.
It is a contemporary romance novel between two people that believe that love is an illusion. It was one of the first few works that I had written on Wattpad and since I had wrote it years ago, I was quite surprised that it was picked up by Blvnp Incorporated but nonetheless, it is a really exciting opportunity.
Which book from your childhood or teenage years has stuck with you as an adult?
I have always read a wide range of genres, from romance to fantasy to action books. Books by Roald Dahl made my childhood really interesting and I remember reading Matilda and the BFG countless times. I also loved the classics like Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, not to mention Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I also loved the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling and all books by Matthew Reilly.
What books are currently on your night stand?
Currently, I am reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I haven't finished it yet but it's a really interesting read. I was hooked from the first few chapters.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I think that the authors mentioned earlier are the ones who really inspired me to write. The very idea that stringing words together can impact and motivate someone astounds me. Up until this year, writing was just a hobby for me. It was like a break from my day to day activities, like an escape.
Do you listen to anything while you write? If so, what's your audio of choice?
As strange as it may be, I listen to soundtracks from films or musicals like The Phantom of the Opera or Les Misérables. The pieces really help me to focus and give me inspiration.
What is a typical day like for you?
Attending university, juggling time with my family and friends, and attempting to fit in writing whenever I can.
What's the best advice you've ever received?
The best advice I’ve been given was from a friend that had told me that if you want something bad enough you have to work hard for it if not, it’s not really worth it. That friend has really encouraged and supported me in my life since we were children and that statement has always stayed with me.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
A quote - I think - that I really use in my life is by Thomas Edison: "Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration."
