Interview with B.G. Cousins, author of The Great Celt

What can you tell us about your new release, The Great Celt?

The Great Celt is my second novel. When I was writing my first book, I didn't envision it to be the beginning of a series, but as it progressed, i continued to add things that indicated some interesting history I could write stories around. Once the Locket was finished, I had to decide whether to write a sequel or delve into some of the historical points and go back in time. I started to read extensively about Ivan the Great and it turns out he was a very fascinating guy in a time of petty princes who didn't have as much power as kings back in western Europe had. Plopping my Rainey character and his sword down into that was exciting as the beginnings of the nation of Russia was just starting to form.

What's the last book you read?

I'm currently reading two books. One is called "Luther's Fortress" by James Reston Jr., about Martin Luther and the beginnings of the Reformation in the early 16th Century. The second book is "The Brothers" by Stephen Kinzer, about Foster and Allan Dulles and their effects on American foreign policy during and after the Second World War. Both books are research for future books I'll be writing. Historical accuracy is very important to me.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Oh, I'd be more inclined to visit a real historical world, such as the Scottish Highlands during the '45 or during Robert the Bruce's time. England after the Roman legions left would also be fascinating.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask them?

I think I'd like to interview Bernard Cornwell. I'd want to ask how he translates his historical research into such fine stories.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Letting my imagination wander. I write in scenes and linking the scenes together into a coherent story can be so exciting, even when it really goes off the rails and I have to stop myself and go back.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Time travel, for sure 🙂

What scene in The Great Celt was your favorite to write?

I think it was when Ludmilla first goes after the Chergins. She's been trained to handle herself by Connor Rainey and she arrives in Novgorod to find assassins attacking her brother's home. She decides to retaliate and discovers that a woman is not paid too much attention, allowing her to get past guards. It is where she invents the legend of Ruslan Tripensky.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

The world will continue to throw you curve balls, but if you stay positive and true to yourself, you can accomplish great things.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

LP: I love delving into the mind of a sociopath and depicting all their awful vices, whilst finding a degree of redeemability within love, lust or obsession.

Stevie: Exposing the depraved side of humanity and showing its vulnerabilities.

What's a typical day like for you?

LP: I walk my dog, sometimes ride my horse, then Stevie calls me and we write together while on video call. Yes, we’re co-dependent. Haha!

Stevie: All the coffee, then I take my kids to school, call Lauren, write, cook, and snuggle with my hubs.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

LP: Probably sleeping.

Interview with Christopher Greyson, author of The Girl Who Lived

What can you tell us about your new release, The Girl Who Lived?

Ten years ago, four people were murdered. Faith Winters was the sole survivor. As the anniversary of the murders approaches, Faith is released from the psychiatric hospital and sent back to her hometown where the slayings took place. Wracked by the lingering echoes of survivor’s guilt, Faith spirals into a black hole of alcoholism and self-destruction. Faith decides to track down her sister’s killer—and then discovers that she’s the one being hunted.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. I’m a big fan of their works.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always loved creating and entertaining people. Writing brings both of those joys together for me. I feel energized doing it. It’s like I get to create my own world and then go play in it.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

I tend to eat only with people who are alive so… I’d have to say a group of strangers. Each person has a story and I love finding them out. A lot of people get put off meeting new people. I love it. As an added bonus I usually get a lot of great material from the conversations.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

I love the rain. It doesn’t keep me inside either. A good storm makes me feel like I’m in a Kurosawa movie. So you could find me out hiking, at the beach or writing in a bookstore.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Keep the faith. The world is full of faith squelchers. Some are well-intentioned and some aren’t, but lots of people will try to get you to give up big dreams and settle for the crumbs. Dare to dream and dream big.

What scene in The Girl Who Lived was your favorite to write?

When Robert drives Faith home. It’s a little scene but there is a lot of underlying emotions to it. Both Robert and Faith are like broken glass figures with pieces missing. There was something special writing about two damaged people worried so much about interacting with each other and yet not wanting to be alone.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Deeds not words. Kind of strange for a writer but talk is cheap and I try to show—not tell—with my actions as well as my writing.

Interview with Carlos Dash, author of Dorian

What can you tell us about your new release, Dorian?

Dorian is a new adult romance novel about the billionaire owner of a major sports franchise falling in love for the first time. This is someone who has gone his entire life avoiding getting close to people, so this change hits him at the core. He has no idea how to deal with the emotions going through him, which leads to some very interesting situations.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I was inspired to become an author by the desire to share my stories with as many people as possible. As for who inspired me, I'd single out Nicholas Sparks. before I started reading his books, I thought no one would be interested in reading romance novels written by a man.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Boy, that's a tough one. In no particular order: The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, It's Kind of a Funny Story, Shutter Island. And for the last one, I'll cheat and mention the entire Harry Potter series as one book.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

There are too many authors I would love to interview. But Nicholas Sparks, Penny Wylder, and J.K. Rowling would be at the top of the list.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The ability to take ideas in my head and put them into a format where I can share my vision with many others from many walks of life.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

With my family and my pets - just sitting around and talking.

What scene in Dorian was your favorite to write?

Honestly, I loved writing all of it. No preference for any particular scene - although the sex scenes are obviously the steamiest.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Just enjoy yourself and let the universe resolve whatever you're going through.

What can you tell us about your new release, Constant Craving?

This is the book of my heart. I love second-chance romances and wanted to write something that was angsty and super sexy. I also wanted to create two strong, stubborn characters who are passionately perfect for each other — but are reluctant to admit it.

What's the last book you read?

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood. I actually didn’t like any of the characters, but author Bryn Greenwood is such a good writer that she made me care. That’s the kind of book I love - when a writer is so good that you are immersed in a world and consume the words in one sitting.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. Tragic, flawed and doomed.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Cheryl Strayed (Wild), Roxane Gay (Bad Feminist) and L.S. Hilton (Maestra, Domina). Bonus invite: Anne Lamott (Bird by Bird)

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

The ability to stay away from the internet for long chunks of time.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

Reading, napping and snuggling with my husband and dogs.

What scene in Constant Craving was your favorite to write?

When Rafael, the hero, kisses Justine for the first time in the book. It’s the first time they’ve kiss din eleven years, and I wanted to convey the longing, anger and need in that one kiss. I wrote and rewrote that scene so many times. I knew I did my job when a reader said, “it was beautiful and so emotional. I started crying."
