The Six Book Awards all Book Insiders Should Follow

There are over hundreds of thousands of novels published every year in the United States alone. That's a whole lot of fiction. And every year, from the thousands of books, a few are deemed the very best in literature. There are several different awards in varying countries with different guidelines and restrictions. Each award has a different process, but they are all great for letting us know which books are the very best. Here's a list of Six Book Awards given to the mightiest of pen wielders.

Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction

This prestigious prize is awarded to the best women's fiction writing in English. The award began in 1996, in response to the all-male Man Booker Prize shortlist in 1991.


 

Man Booker Prize for Fiction

The Man Booker Prize has been around since 1968, but was restricted to the United Kingdom and it's previously owned territories, excluding the United States, until 2013. Now any English language novel can be submitted for the £50,000 ($71,935) prize.


Costa Book Awards

The Costa Awards, previously named the Whitbread Book Awards, are awarded to stories of merit that spread the experience of enjoyment to its readers. Since its beginning in 1971, this prize is awarded exclusively to writers from Britain and Ireland.


Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

Founded in 1917, the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction is one of seven Pulitzers from the Letters, Drama, and Music category awarded every year. Limited to residents of the US, it is one of the few literary prizes with repeat winners.


PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction

Once claimed to be the largest peer-juried award in the country, the PEN/Faulkner Award is awarded each year to the best American writers of literature. The prize actually began as a portion from William Faulkner's Nobel Prize winnings in 1949, but dissolved in 1970 before being resurrected in 1981.


National Book Awards for Fiction

The National Book Awards began in 1936 and recognize four genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people. Limited to authors from the US published in the US, the winners receive $10,000 and a bronze statue, while the runners up receive $1,000 apiece.

Interview with Karen Odden, Author of A Lady in the Smoke


Tell us a little bit about your new release, A Lady in the Smoke.

It’s a first novel that came out of my doctoral dissertation at NYU, about Victorian railway disasters, of all things. Railway crashes were something like a national obsession in the mid-1800s in England, partly because they were the first enormous, violent accidents that cut across all the social boundaries. The victims ranged from titled aristocrats to writers (Charles Dickens crawled out of one in 1865) to railway engine drivers and laborers. As a result, all kinds of people—doctors, members of parliament, newspapermen, novelists, and so on—wrote about them, trying to figure out why they happened, what could be done to prevent another one, and how to cope with all the injuries and death that came out of them. Eventually, I decided I wanted to write a novel that started with a Victorian train wreck—partly because I knew a lot about the complicated historical context and partly because extraordinary events can call forth extraordinary aspects of character.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I was the geeky, lonely kid who read in the corner all the time, so I’d say I was first inspired to write by other authors. (I grew up on Mary Stewart, who could mix suspense and romance like no one else; A Lady in the Smoke certainly owes something to her!) Now, I have some books that draw me back to them again and again, inspiring me by the way they use language, and by the honesty with which they plumb the human heart. Lit by Mary Karr, The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney, Into the Woods by Tana French, Too Late the Phalarope by Alan Paton, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, March by Geraldine Brooks, Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt, and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell are some of them. (Yes, I’m all over the map.)

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

Probably Anne of Green Gables. I’m a red-head, too, and her utter fearlessness—her willingness to be exactly who she is, to love passionately, to crack a slate over someone’s head if he’s making fun of her, to laugh at herself—is something I admire hugely!

What is a typical day like for you?

I get my two kids off to school on the bus at 7 a.m. (a process that is a bit like herding cats sometimes), hike with friends till 9 or so, and then put my butt in my office chair. I usually write for three or four hours, on days I’m drafting or revising. (A friend asked me once if I ever took a day off of writing. I replied, Well, it’s kind of like taking a day off from brushing my teeth. I can do it; it just doesn’t feel very good!) Other days I google “Victorian crime” and just read and read. Then I pick up the kids at 3:30, take them to their various activities, walk my sweet aging beagle Rosy, put together dinner (sometimes eaten in shifts, as kids and husband come home different times), and fall into bed by 10 p.m. after reading for three minutes.

BAM. You’re a superhero. What’s your superpower?

Am I allowed to pick time travel? If not, I think I’d like to be invisible. I’ll own it: I’m terribly curious about what happens when people think no one is watching.

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

Getting lost in it. There are days when I have a scene playing in my head so clearly, it’s as if I’m watching real people and simply recording what they do. For example, the day I was writing the first confrontation between Lady Elizabeth and Mr. Flynn—when he thinks she’s an earl’s daughter, flirting with Mr. Wilcox out of boredom, and she assumes he’s an unethical newspaperman intent on digging up dirt to sell papers—I could see her hands tugging on her shawl and the changing shape of his mouth; I could hear their words and the tones in their voices. They did everything; I just wrote it down.

What's your favorite quote or scene from A Lady in the Smoke?

I’d say it’s the second day of Paul’s trial, when Lady Elizabeth takes the stand, telling her story to a jury of men who have been cynical and unsympathetic so far. She finally articulates the horror of the railway crash and, for the first time, feels it with all her heart. I’ve probably read it 50 times, and I still cry with her.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I try to live by the words of Henry James: “Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind.” The other piece of advice is this, courtesy of a friend: “As you drive around every day, at each red light, think of something you’re grateful for. It might sound a little strange, but it’s a good practice for today’s world.” Now, all that about kindness and gratitude being said, I believe to write a good book you have to be willing to grapple with the ugliest the human heart has to offer. My next book, Down a Dark River, is about a terrible crime, a cruel disavowal, and the most brutal kind of revenge.

Interview with Ashlyn Macnamara, Author of To Lure a Proper Lady


Tell us a little bit about your new release, To Lure a Proper Lady.

The heroine is the daughter of a hypochondriac duke whose “dying” wish (which he reminds his children of regularly) is to see his three daughters make proper society matches. Except Lizzie has reason to believe her papa isn’t faking it this time, so she hires a Bow Street Runner to investigate. Naturally sparks fly, but a Bow Street Runner is hardly an appropriate match for a duke’s daughter.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

I have a couple, but they’re my heroes because of who they mean to me more than what they write—although you should check that out, too. One of them is Valerie Bowman and the other writes as Caroline Bradley. I admire them both for their ability to set writing goals and their determination to do everything possible to meet those goals. Valerie is a great organizer of people. She sets up groups of writers and then leads them on and encourages them to surpass themselves. Caroline has met with a lot of challenges in her life, but last year I watched her draw a line in the sand and decide this was going to be her year to publish no matter what. She self-published a book, but at the same time she finaled in the RWA®’s Golden Heart® contest (which determines the best unpublished manuscripts in various categories every year) and sold that same manuscript. Both these ladies have given me invaluable encouragement at different points, and I can safely say I wouldn’t be published without them.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Getting paid to listen to the voices in my head.

Who is your favorite historical figure?

I have such trouble picking favorites. It varies, because I tend to bump from one fascination to the next. There are just too darn many to choose from. Daniel Morgan and Benedict Arnold (yes, I know, but before he turned traitor, he didn’t get enough credit for some of the things he did—and perhaps if he had been given that credit, he might not have turned) are a couple of figures whose stories I enjoyed reading when I was writing about the American Revolution. Jane Austen, of course. Mary Wollstonecraft. I could go on.

What's your favorite thing about Montreal?

I’m a transplant. I came here when I was 18 to attend university. I had to leave a time or two after that, once to go home for graduate school and another time when my husband was transferred to another province. But we’ve always missed Montreal terribly and we’ve always come back. You might say I came of age here, in a sense, but a lot of what I love about this city is intangible. Due to the French factor, it’s different from anywhere else I’ve ever been. I think the dual cultures (that, at times, duel), the French and the English, add an extra depth. And that’s before we get into all the people of other cultures that have adopted this place. It’s simply a very unique mix—and not without its problems, I hasten to add. But still.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

Love makes my world go round, literally. I’m a romance writer, and I need to believe in happily ever after. I don’t think I need to explain how that brings me joy. 😉

What's your favorite quote or scene from To Lure a Proper Lady?

I’m fairly partial to a scene where my Bow Street Runner hero Dysart has to pretend he’s a guest at a house party the family is holding while he’s trying to investigate potential foul play. He gets suckered into playing a parlor game with the heroine in his lap, which makes things rather uncomfortable, since he has to behave himself in front of a room full of other guests. And that’s before the heroine’s batty great-aunt crashes the party.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Not so much something I live by, but here’s a quote I like. It’s on the front page of my website: “Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It’s a way of understanding it.”–Lloyd Alexander. There is an inherent truth to this. It’s a reminder that even if you’re writing the most fantastical of worlds, you still have to draw on fundamental reality so your reader can relate to what you’re writing. You still have to maintain that recognizable humanity in your characters.
