Interview with Alison G. Bailey, Author of the Dance

What can you tell us about your new release, The Dance?

The Dance is a contemporary romance that shows what happens after the happily ever after. At the beginning of the book we meet high school sweethearts, Bryson and Will, on their wedding day. The couple has their perfect life all mapped out until a year into the marriage things begin to crumble. With the help of an old acquaintance, Hart Mitchell, Bryson discovers her true self. This isn't a love triangle or a story about cheating. The Dance is about love, strength, forgiveness, and courage. It's a thought-provoking and unique journey about following one's heart.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Petruchio and Kate from The Taming of the Shrew. I know technically it's one of Shakespeare's plays. What can I say, I was a theater major. 🙂

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

Being around family, friends and my dogs. Also the reactions I get from readers. I want my books to have a purpose. I want the reader to be entertained but I also want them to feel the story. I tend to write about subjects that are unique to the romance genre. I'll never be able to explain fully how it feels when a reader contacts me because they were impacted by one of my books. Being an author is a lonely business and I never know if I'm stepping too far over the line. But when readers tell me they felt the entire gamut of emotions while reading something I created, I know I'm doing right by them.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love when the inspiration for a story hits you hard and the characters won't stop talking. There have been times when I can't type fast enough to get the ideas out.

What TV show have you binge watched recently?

Grace and Frankie on Netflix and I watch at least three episodes of Friends every night.

You've written and produced several plays in your life. Has your experience in theater influenced your novels in any way?

My theater experience has been a huge influence on my writing style. Theater is driven by dialogue, which is my favorite thing to write. So my characters like to talk to each other. A lot.

What scene in The Dance was your favorite to write?

Honestly, the entire book was my favorite to write. Because I spend so much time crafting my books, even when not at the computer I'm always thinking of the characters and plot, at some point I get tired of the story. I never got tired of writing the Dance. I feel its my best work so far. The characters and plot are multilayered and the storyline is very unique.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

When my nephew was 3 years old he was at the kitchen table attempting to scoop ice cream from the carton. My sister reached for the spoon but he wouldn't give it to her. As my nephew continued to dig, he said, "I gotta try, Momma." Words to live by.

Interview with Susan Breen, Author of Maggie Dove

What can you tell us about your new release, Maggie Dove?

Maggie Dove is a ‘cozy mystery with bite,’ which means, I believe, that it’s about nice people in a nice place who are forced to grapple with some really difficult things. I’m intrigued by courage and how so-called ‘ordinary people’ find the strength to fight against evil. The protagonist of my novel, Maggie Dove, is a 62-year-old Sunday School teacher and I suspect she would never describe herself as courageous, but I think she’s fabulous.

What books are currently on your night stand?

So many books! There’s Simon Sebag Montefiore’s new history of the Romanovs; Vikram Seth’s novel, A Suitable Boy (which is wonderful, but is taking me forever to read); Best American Mystery Stories 2015; Christine Trent’s mystery about a Victorian undertaker, Lady in Ashes; and last but not least, an Agatha Christie. The one I’m reading now is And Then There Were None.

Where did you write Maggie Dove? (your couch, a coffee shop, a bar…hey-we won’t judge)

I’m afraid there’s not much to judge. I write in my office at an old desk that I assembled a long time ago. Two little cockapoos lie at my feet and whenever I have a great insight, I jump up and kick them, which is unfortunate. There’s also a very large cat named Calvin who creeps in every so often. From my window I can see an oak tree and it was that very tree that inspired the opening scene in Maggie Dove, though I’m happy to say my neighbor never tried to poison it.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

Anne Lamott is a great hero of mine. In addition to admiring her books, I also admire the honest way she lives her life. She writes openly about her political and religious beliefs, but I think she does it in such a way that she doesn’t offend people who disagree. Another one of my literary heroes is Masha Hamilton, who I met when she was also a teacher at Gotham Writers. She’s a wonderful writer, but even more inspiring is that she’s devoted this last decade to helping young women in Afghanistan learn to write their stories. If you ever doubt the power of words, you should read some of what they write.

What are you currently craving?

Chocolate. Always.

What’s your favorite part about teaching in New York City?

I teach in the heart of Times Square and so every different type of person you can imagine comes to my classroom. There are people of every nationality, every gender, every political persuasion (although they do tend to veer liberal). My favorite part of my job is hearing their stories. For example, one of my students grew up in Dubai and is writing a novel set there. I find Dubai such a mysterious and unknowable place, and yet through my student’s story, I’m coming to understand it better.

What scene in Maggie Dove was your favorite to write?

I loved the climactic scene, which I can’t describe too much without giving away the ending. But what I liked about it was that everything just seemed to come together and Maggie Dove felt transformed. I do love moments of transformation. Perhaps, not surprisingly, A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite books. Of course, Maggie Dove does not wake up at the end of my book and ask for a goose for Tiny Tim, but I do believe she’s a changed woman.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I’ve always liked this Anne Lamott quote: “Pay attention to the beauty surrounding you.”

Interview with Sarah Robinson, Author of Saving a Legend

What can you tell us about your new release, Saving a Legend?

Saving a Legend is a story about family, romance, and redemption. Both of the main characters feel lost, adrift in unfulfilling lives with no idea how to get back to finding their passions. Coming together, they better one another and build a new path along the way that neither of them could ever have imagined. One of the things I loved most about writing this book was its theme of second chances and forgiveness because of how applicable that is to almost everyone. We’ve all made wrong choices and we’ve all had to start back at square one. The other thing I loved about this novel was incorporating a character with a mental disorder—the main female character is the guardian for her special needs little sister. I loved the research that went into this, and being able to portray her as accurately and honestly as possible.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

My favorite book of all time was actually from my childhood, and it’s called The Cay by Theodore Taylor. That was the first book I ever read that really made me feel, completely breaking open my heart. My other top choices (although this is always changing and being added to!) is You by Carolines Kepnes, Nine Minutes by Beth Flynn, The Kids Are All Right by the Welch siblings, and all of the Hunger Games books!

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Oooh, this is a tough one! If I had to choose, I’d pick Nora Roberts, Rachel van Dyken, and James Patterson. I feel like that would be a super eclectic, fun bunch of people and I’d spend the entire night asking them questions and trying to soak up all their knowledge and experience!

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

I’d want to be on one of those really cool villas that’s on the water (with a fully stocked library of course!). I don’t know exactly where they are, or how insanely priced it is, but how fun would it be to have to walk down a dock to get to your house, or jump out of your bedroom into the crystal clear ocean? It would definitely need to have a glass bottom floor too, because I want to look down and see fish swimming under me! That’d be my dream.

What's your spirit animal?

Kevin, from the television sitcom, The Office. Does that count as a spirit animal? Because there’s one scene where he spills a huge pot of chili and just gets stuck rolling around in it as he’s trying to get up, making a much larger mess... pretty accurate depiction of my life

What is the one movie that you can quote the most?

For movies... it’s probably The Notebook. Seen it dozens of times and love it so much that I even start crying before the sad scenes just because I know what’s coming. However, I can pretty much verbatim recite every line of the play (which has been adapted into a movie) The Phantom of the Opera. I love, love, love that play and am borderline obsessed. I’ve seen it several times on Broadway, been backstage, and even have a signed playbill from the entire cast from like 20 years ago. I seriously adore everything about that story!

What scene in Saving a Legend was your favorite to write?

The epilogue! I can’t go into too much detail without giving spoilers, but that just made me so happy and emotional, I was grinning ear to ear.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Do what’s right, not what’s easy.
