Interview with Kali Wallace, Author of Shallow Graves

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Shallow Graves.

Shallow Graves is about a teenage girl named Breezy who is murdered one night after an ordinary high school party. She wakes up one year later to find that she has come back as some kind of undead creature of the night with the ability to sense murderers and an entire world and magic and monsters and mysteries to explore. She travels across the country and meets many interesting new people, some good and some bad, some who want to help and some who want to hurt, all the while trying to figure out what's happened to her and what kind of place she has in this new world she doesn't understand.

What are you currently craving?

Oranges. I would really like to have an orange right now.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Ooooh this is a tough one. I love to talk about writing with other writers. I think I would have to pick Ursula K. Le Guin, although there is a danger that I wouldn't even be able to ask a question. I would just sort of vaguely splutter, "Books. Science fiction. Fantasy. Stuff. Writing. You know?" And she, I hope, would be gracious enough to interpret my intention and find something to say on those topics. I am certain it would be interesting and wise and well worth talking about for a little while!

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

A spaceship that makes space travel across vast distances, to fascinating corners of the galaxy, safe, easy, and readily available to young adult authors.

What will your next adventure be?

I'm going to get to work on that spaceship just as soon as I'm done writing books.

What books are currently on your night stand?

I have a lot of books on my night stand, because my night stand is basically an extension of my bookshelves: The Whale by Philip Hoare, The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich, The Bishop's Wife by Mette Ivie Harrison (which I've already read; it's just waiting to go back to the library), I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb, A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James, The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri, and The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes.

What's your favorite quote or scene from Shallow Graves?

My very favorite scene comes near the end, so I don't want to spoil it, but it's a section where my main character--who is, if you'll recall, very much undead--reflects upon what her life would have been like if it had gone on as planned. It's hard to explain why this section is so beloved to me, but it's my favorite, and I hope other people find it as powerful as I mean it to be.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I don't, really, but do try to live day to day remembering that unless I ever find myself in possession of nuclear launch codes and/or vials of a zombie pandemic virus, the mistakes I makes aren't going to bring about the end of the world, and in that context a mistake is just a mistake, and there's nothing to do but learn and try to do better and go forward.

Interview with Christi Barth, Author of Risking It All

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Risking It All.

This book kicks off the Naked Men series, based on the idea that one moment in a life can change everything. For five DC men, that moment happened back in high school, when their soccer team’s bus crashed in the middle of the Alps. They were stranded for three days, seriously injured and with little hope of rescue. Their struggle to survive united them as brothers for life. What they each went through indelibly shaped their personalities and even influenced their career choices. Risking it All is the story of Griff - who wants to save everyone - meeting Chloe who most definitely does not want or need to be saved by him.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

Born in Fire, by Nora Roberts. That entire trilogy was my master class on writing romance - before I took any actual workshops. I began writing my first published book because of that book, soaking up all its nuances like a sponge. I'd read other books by her, and a ton of historical romance, but that really kicked me into writing contemporary romance.

What's the most interesting thing that happened while you were a wedding planner?

A couple eloped to Vegas and didn't tell anyone, because they still wanted the big wedding. They planned to reveal their 'first' wedding in a video at the reception. Except...their wedding was just a week after 9/11, and people were petrified to fly in from all over the country, so they decided they had to keep their elopement secret forever. There was much slight of hand on my part with the marriage license...

Do you listen to anything while you write? If so, what's your audio of choice?

I find music to be too distracting - as a former music major, I get sucked into listening rather than working. The only exception is a sex scene. Not a makeout - just full sex. That requires Pink Martini (jazz), although I recently discovered - to my shock and chagrin - that super dirty sex comes out quickly to Nick Jonas.

What's your favorite play or musical?

I performed in musicals professionally, so it is very difficult to narrow it down. I'd have to say The Gondoliers, because I met my husband in it, or Guys & Dolls, which was my first lead role. And some just kick-ass songs!

What TV show have you binge watched?

Californication. House of Cards. Downton Abbey. Alpha House. TV-a-holic here.

What's your favorite quote or scene from Risking It All?

Chloe and Griff's 'official' first date. He's all proud of himself for coming up with an ultra-romantic Segue tour of the monuments in the moonlight. She's petrified the machine will either run over someone or run her into the Tidal Basin. It makes Griff realize that he's going to have to not follow the playbook with Chloe. And yes, it ends up with romantic kisses under the cherry trees - as iconic DC as it gets!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I have two quotes at the front of my planner. "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun" ~ Katherine Hepburn. And, believe it or not, one that utterly suits my romantic heart from the TV show Mad About You: "I want hundreds of things, but I need only one."

Interview with David Rosenfelt, Author of Blackout

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Blackout.

It's a standalone thriller about a cop who is shot while on duty. He sustains a head injury which causes retrograde amnesia, wiping out the last decade of memory. It soon becomes obvious that he had been in the process of uncovering a major terrorist plot, but with no memory, he is forced to desperately try to recreate his actions and learn the truth.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Stretching the word 'literary', I would invite all the comedy writers from the old Sid Caesar television shows. They include, among others, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Neil Simon and Larry Gelbart. I wouldn't ask them a single question...I'd just sit back and listen to them talk.

What will your next adventure be?

If you mean what am I writing, I'm working on two Andy Carpenter books for 2016. The first is called "Outfoxed", and will be released in July. The second is called "12 Dogs of Christmas"...you probably can guess when that will be released. If you mean real-life adventure, I'm settling in to watch the NFL playoffs.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Enjoy the moment.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

Maine. We moved here four years ago from California, and it's as if we found Brigadoon. It's physically beautiful; we live on wooded acreage on a lake, and it's like waking up every morning in a Folger's commercial. But the people make this place special; we have made lifelong friends that I only wish I knew for my whole life.

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

I don't think I've ever read a book a second time.

What's your favorite quote or scene from Blackout?

The main character, Doug Brock, is on his computer, googling to attempt to refresh his memory and learn what has gone on in the world the last ten years. He says:

"There is no doubt the Kardashian family is everywhere, but I can't seem to get Google to tell me why. They're famous, but it doesn't appear to have come from acting or singing or anything like that. I think their father was OJ Simpson's lawyer at one point, but I doubt that explains it. Nobody seems to be broadcasting "Keeping up with the Dershowitzes".

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I don't, which is just as well, since I probably wouldn't live by it.

Interview with Melissa Gorzelanczyk, Author of Arrows

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Arrows.

Arrows is the story of Karma, a dance prodigy, whose life is changed through the power of a single cupid's arrow. Aaryn's.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

I love the concept of hygge, a Danish word that often translates to "cozy." (You can see more of my hygge obsession via my Pinterest board.)

Rain, sun or snow, I like to spend my free time doing things I enjoy, with people I enjoy. That includes watching a Netflix series (currently on Gilmore Girls and Fargo), reading, listening to music, and definitely eating terrible amounts of junk food.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Instant travel.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

First, do not perm your bangs.

Second, true love feels good, so if you're crying all of the time, you might want to move on from that guy.

You wouldn’t be caught dead, where?

Anywhere with spiders. *shudders*

What's the last song that was stuck in your head?

MAPS by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

What's your favorite quote or scene for Arrows?

Oh man, that's too hard! But okay, okay, the first scene that comes to mind is when Aaryn sees Karma dance for the first time, written from Aaryn's POV. The chapter ends with:

"The music cut just in time to hear her gasp for the last move, a deep backbend that finished the song, and with that sound in my ears--her breathing--I felt the trouble I was in."

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I'll admit to being a bit of a quote addict, but something that always pops up when I'm struggling with a decision or facing an obstacle is the first line of the Holstee Manifesto:

"This is your life."

That reminds me that in the end, life is what I make of it, not the things that are happening to me. My actions can change everything.
