Interview with Sarah Fox, Author of The Crêpes of Wrath

What can you tell us about your new release, The Crêpes of Wrath?

The main character, Marley McKinney, lives in Seattle, but goes to the town of Wildwood Cove on the Olympic Peninsula to temporarily run a pancake house for an ailing relative. When that relative is murdered, Marley becomes embroiled in the investigation. She also inherits the pancake house and has to decide whether to sell it and return to Seattle or remain in Wildwood Cove. The town of Wildwood Cove is fictional, but inspired by one of my favorite beaches where my family went on summer vacations while I was growing up. The story has a hint of romance, a sweet tabby cat named Flapjack, and recipes are included for some of the items featured on the pancake house’s menu.

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

Like many people, I’ve read the Harry Potter series numerous times. A childhood favorite, Charley by Joan G. Robinson, is another book I’ve read over and over again. Authors I return to regularly include Agatha Christie, Sheila Connolly, Sofie Kelly, and Kathy Reichs.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Kathy Reichs would be my first guest. I’ve been following her Temperance Brennan series for many years. Since the Dr. Brennan of the books is so different from the Dr. Brennan of the TV show Bones, I’d ask her what it is she likes best about each version of the character that’s different from the other.

What's your favorite thing about writing cozy mysteries?

Writing cozy mysteries makes me happy! Writing cozies gives me the same contented feeling I get when reading cozies, with the added bonus of having the opportunity to bring my own characters to life and to follow their adventures and relationships through multiple books.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

Curled up with a cozy mystery! Cozies really do take me to a happy place. However, geographically, I’d say any peaceful beach where I can relax and listen to the ocean. The sound of breaking waves is one of my favorite sounds in the world.

What is the one movie that you can quote the most?

I’m not much of a movie quoter, but the TV show I can quote the most is The X-Files.

What scene in The Crêpes of Wrath was your favorite to write?

I think there are two or three scenes that tie for my favorite, all of which are between the main character, Marley, and her childhood crush, Brett, whom she meets again for the first time in nearly two decades at the beginning of the book.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Life is better with chocolate!

Interview with Lisa Renee Jones, Author of Hard Rules

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Hard Rules.

Hard Rules is book one in my new Dirty Money series. It’s a much different series than my others are. It’s darker and grittier for one. But also I brought in a family drama dynamic I haven’t yet explored in one of my books before. The jist is two brothers, Shane and Derek vying for control of the family empire. Shane, our hero, will do anything to save the company from the corrupt poison Derek is hell-bent on pouring into it. But then he meets Emily. She became his light in the darkness of betrayal and lies that is his family. But the true question is will their love be enough to save them from the destruction that is looming ahead? This is a 4 book series that will pack a lot of suspense, passion and intrigue until the heart-stopping end.

Which book from your childhood or teenage years has stuck with you as an adult?

Not a book, but an author. Victoria Holt. My mom read her books and I would sneak them from her shelf and read them.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

Most people don’t know that I come from a corporate world so I have the business book WHO MOVED MY CHEESE forever on my shelf. It’s a remind to never get complacent in business, or life.

What's it like to have one of your books set to be made into a TV series?

It’s surreal. Hollywood is a MUCH different space than the publishing world. So learning those ins and outs has been exciting and terrifying at the same time. But at the end of the day I cannot wait to see Inside Out come to life on a screen.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Oooh to understand animals? I would love to know what my cat is ACTUALLY saying. Or to stop time. I think I'd like that. I’d be able to just freeze time do my writing and work normal hours! What a dream!

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Sleeping or writing. Those are pretty much my only two modes right now because of my deadlines.

What scene in Hard Rules was your favorite to write?

I have two! The Lipstick scene which is when Shane and Emily meet. It’s fun and flirty, but you also get the intensity from Shane as well. And then there’s the balcony scene… sigh. That scene is hot and sexy and all around probably the most memorable. Not only is it an incredibly erotic encounter between Shane and Emily, but it’s also a building of their trust with one another. I think it was a real turning point in their relationship in book one.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Everything happens for a reason. I live by the quote. Obviously there are extreme cases that don’t adhere, but it helps me see reason in life. If something I’ve been hoping and dreaming for doesn’t work out, it’s for a reason. There’s something else out there for me. Or I was meant to go through an emotional turmoil to grow and learn as a person. That quote, while a cliché, is something I repeat to myself almost daily.

Interview with Molly O'Keefe, Author of Burn Down the Night

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Burn Down the Night.

BURN DOWN THE NIGHT is about Joan and Max – two characters readers met in Everything I Left Unsaid and The Truth About Him. Joan is one of my favorite characters I’ve written. She’s really tough but also really vulnerable. She’s a total survivor. She’s funny and sharp and is hiding a very desperate heart.

Max is the President of a motorcycle club. He’s been a part of a criminal life forever and has made terrible sacrifices to keep his brother (Dylan from the previous books) safe. But he also lives like he knows he’s going to die any minute. They both have thick armor and terrible wounds. One reader described them as feral – and I don’t think that’s too far off!

Basically, I wanted to write a book about a woman who kidnaps a very dangerous man in an effort to get him to help her – not the best plan, but like I said Joan is desperate. Their chemistry is off the charts but the danger each of them surrounds themselves with is very real. In an effort to convince Max to help her, she keeps doing everything he asks – and some things he doesn’t ask for, but desperately needs. So, he is her prisoner but she does everything he asks of her. The power dynamic is really exciting and dangerous.

What books are currently on your night stand?

I just finished an ARC of The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz and I’m about to start an ARC of Sonali Dev’s CHANGE OF HEART. I have started the Demonologist by Andrew Pyper, but I’m not sure I’m going to make it all the way – it’s getting very freaky. (I’m on vacation and there’s this hammock I’m considering making my home… there’s a lot of reading happening.)

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

Emily from Emily of New Moon by LM Montgomery. Emily made me want to be a writer. I haven’t reread that series in so long, I think I’m due…

What's your favorite thing about living in Toronto?

Delivery sushi?

In all honesty, I love my neighborhood – Leslieville. It’s very much like a small town in a way. My kids walk to school. We go to the park. I walk to the grocery store. I know all the shopkeepers and everyone waves and chats on the sidewalk.

I also deeply love our Prime Minister right now. I appreciate compassionate inclusive politics. And he’s a compassionate man.

What's rocking your world this month?

Again, I’m on vacation:
Medium spice peel and eat shrimp from the seafood market off the beach.
Radler beer
Have I mentioned this hammock?
Annika Martin’s DARK MAFIA PRINCE
The Suicide Squad trailer (in it Harley Quinn is reading BETWEEN THE SHEETS – one of my books!!)
The Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know book club: https://www.facebook.com/groups/505001329696267/

What's in your Netflix queue?

I just finished Season 1 and 2 of Empire – oh, that was some fun!! I’m onto Vikings season 2!
Waiting for more Sherlock
And my husband and I are making our way through Season 2 of Bloodlines. I love this show so much, the slow slow burn of it.

What scene in Burn Down the Night was your favorite to write?

So, like I said, they’re both very dangerous so they aren’t touching each other. Max is handcuffed to a bed and she’s keeping her distance. However, their chemistry is pretty off the charts. They’ve been eyeing each other for months. And at one point she’s reading his messages from his phone and Max’s brother contacts him. Dylan is Max’s blind spot, his weakest link. And Joan jumps on it – making both of them bleed and ache.

And I think if they were in any way less feral they would have climbed into each other’s arms to make each other feel better – but they are far too dangerous for that. So Joan picks up a woman and brings her home and the three of them have a menage scene – but it’s once removed.

That was my favorite scene to write because not only is it really sexy, but everyone is really raw too. All the emotions are just barely held in check. And Max and Joan are DYING to touch each other but won’t. So they make this woman feel good instead…

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere? (again, I’m on the beach and that’s written on a sign in this rental house!)

I am TRYING to think before I speak… I have a tendency to do otherwise.

Practice Patience is my daily motto. It works for my marriage, for my kids and for my writing. It’s amazing what a deep breath will accomplish.

Books to Read if You Like American Gods

Life is rarely fantastical. A visit to the woods may provide you with much needed fresh air, but you will see no unicorns. A trip to the dentists will yield no armored knights kicking down doors to save you from your miserable appointment. Even sightings of once reliable sea monsters have grown fewer and fewer in the land of the Scotts. That's where Neil Gaiman comes in. If you want to dose your reality with an aggressive blend of humor, anti-hero, and magic, you need look no further than his works. American Gods stands an original in a well worn genre, funny and innovative, ancient and modern. If you enjoy the weaving of the fantastical and the current day, you're sure to enjoy this list of books to read if you like American Gods.

Fantasy invaded the big city years ago, in an event known as the Great Collision. So when Larissa steps out of her high rise to be chased by a mob of zombies, it's almost totally normal. And when she's rescued by gargoyle, Terak? That's also just expected behavior. But when the two of them discover Larissa was singled out, the attack seems more malicious than mindless. Can they discover what would motivate a necromancer to capture her before it's too late?
