Interview with Tracy March, Author of Just Say Maybe

What can you tell us about your new release, Just Say Maybe?

Just Say Maybe is a sassy contemporary romance set in magical and mountainous Thistle Bend, Colorado. A super-sexy outdoor sports enthusiast literally falls into the path of the real estate attorney he hires to represent him in buying a local abandoned lodge with a shady past. A little mystery is solved, old wrongs are righted, and finding true love turns out to be quite an adventure!

What books are currently on your night stand?

I’m reading America’s First Daughter, a fascinating fictionalization of the life of Thomas Jefferson’s oldest daughter, Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph. My amazingly talented author friends Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie drew the story from thousands of letters and original sources to pen a story that transport readers on a journey from Monticello to revolutionary Paris to the Jefferson White House. I’m learning so much about the enigmatic Thomas Jefferson, his dark family secrets, and the drama surrounding the early days of our nation.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

My happy place is in and around Crested Butte, Colorado, a charming restored Victorian mining town nestled in the rugged Rocky Mountains. I love the area for so many reasons. My husband’s family has roots there, and we’re always welcomed by the friendly townspeople who fondly remember his grandparents. Life happens at a slower pace in Crested Butte, and the natural beauty of the area is simply stunning. In the summer, I enjoy hiking, biking, and back-country four-wheeling in the peaceful, wide-open outdoors. Crested Butte is known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, and I’m always amazed at the gorgeous array of wildflowers blooming, even in the starkest environments. Thistle Bend, the magical town that is the setting of my series that includes Should’ve Said No and Just Say Maybe, is based on the real-life town of Crested Butte—population 1519.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

“Think before you speak.” Spoiler: I freely allow the characters in my books to ignore this—it makes the stories much more fun!

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love when I think I know everything that’s going to happen in a story and, all of a sudden, a plot twist occurs to me out of nowhere. I’m amazed when it fits in with everything that’s come before it and that I have planned afterward. Those moments are so exciting (and few)!

What's the most exciting adventure you've ever been on?

Marriage! I’ve been on all kinds of exciting adventures—flown in a stunt plane, ziplined in the Swiss Alps, snowmobiled on the Continental Divide—but being married to my superhero husband tops all of those experiences. He’s handsome and smart and funny, and he sees the world from a totally unique perspective that makes every day an adventure. There’s a little of him in each of my romance heroes, and our real-life happily ever after inspires me to write the ones in my stories.

What scene in Just Say Maybe was your favorite to write?

There are so many scenes I enjoyed writing in Just Say Maybe. One of my favorites is the first scene where the heroine meets the hero after he gets pitched off his mountain bike while hot-dogging on a ridge trail. The chemistry between them is instant and fun, and I love how the sparks fly between them. Here’s one of my favorite snippets from the scene:

“You’re going to need those brakes on the switchbacks heading down. On the third one, about thirty yards into the Aspen grove, there’s a tree blocking the trail.” Holly winked. “Just in case you’re rusty on your bunny hops.”

Bryce gave her a wry grin. He wasn’t rusty on his bunny hops—or any of his other techniques—and he’d jump at the chance to prove it to her.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Always be thankful. I’m a grateful, stop-and-smell-the-roses, notice-the-little-things kind of person. We live at such a fast and stressful pace. I enjoy taking time to reflect and appreciate the beauty in the world, the goodness in people, and all the abundance in my life.

Interview With Carla J. Hanna, Author of Starlet's End

What can you tell us about your new release, Starlet's End?

It places the reader inside the life of a Hollywood insider who struggles to redefine herself and assert her power. Young women in the entertainment industry compete for screen time with a focus on sexy beauty. The focus on appearance rather than on acting talent influences what the actor values in her personal life. Starlet’s End demonstrates how actresses can still win if they change the sexy paradigm that exists today.

If Starlet's End is turned into a movie, who would you pick to play Liana Marie Michael?

Today, Rowan Blanchard would make a lovely Liana Marie Michael. Her grandfather was an immigrant from the Middle East and father’s side is
white, similar to Hailee Steinfeld whose father is Jewish and mother is of part Filipino descent. An actress with unique features could capture the beauty that comes from the union of distinct races. Lia is the daughter of a striking Native American man and a beautiful, white actress. Her features are ambiguous, just as they are with numerous Hollywood stars.

What's rocking your world this month?

My son is dyslexic and has ADD so school is painfully challenging for him. We are so excited that the best school for challenged learners in our area accepted him for next year. We are thrilled that he has the opportunity to realize his potential. He’s a special, awesome kid.

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

A favorite character is impossible to decide. For children’s literature, I never tire from Winnie-the-Pooh’s simple and honest perspectives. For middle grade, Harry Potter captured my heart and imagination. For Young Adult, I adore Elizabeth Bennet of Pride and Prejudice. For Fantasy, no one can beat Bilbo Baggins. I wish I could have his courage.

Where did you write Starlet's End?

In 2011, I wrote the first draft of the complete Starlet’s Series in my home office after I returned from visiting my sister who lives in Montana. I first titled the fourth book Starlet’s Totems. Since that first draft five years ago, I wrote six more versions of the Starlet’s End manuscript and chopped the fifth draft in half, resulting in the final, concise version. Since the mystery has an abrupt, but fitting, ending, I thought Starlet’s End was the perfect title.

What TV show have you binge watched?

I’ve been watching too much Teen Titans with my kids. For my pleasure, I binged on the wonderful Downton Abbey. I am lucky to be able to spend time with my kids so I focus my time on helping my son to read and write and supporting both kids with their various sports.

What scene in Starlet's End was your favorite to write?

I like the ending. I wrote it first, during the first draft of the series back in 2011, when I was outlining the books. My writing method is to first develop character notebooks, then sketch out a story pitch, next create a detailed outline, then write a key scene for each book, and finally write a first draft. I wrote my favorite scenes for each book during that key scene stage of establishing the detailed outline.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Trust. Forgive. Repeat. I ended Starlet’s Light with that motto because we need to take responsibility for the mistakes we and others make and then move on in order to live happy lives.

Interview with Alexis Morgan, Author of Always for You: Jack

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Always for You: Jack.

Always For You: Jack is the first book in my new series, Sgt. Joe’s Boys, which is about three men who were adopted as teenagers by Sgt. Joe Lukash and his wife. Along with their adoptive parents, the three heroes forged a family bound together by love and a connection that goes bone deep.
Jack McShane has recently left the army and comes home to help his mother deal with Joe’s unexpected death. Jack plans to stay only long enough to close out the family business, but then he crosses paths with a homeless teenager, who reminds Jack of himself back in the day. When Jack hires Caitlyn as a tutor for the boy, it’s the two adults who end up learning how to trust love again.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I always love watching the characters I create become real to me as the plot unfolds and the way they surprise me with the demands they make on how I tell their story. What makes it even more special is when readers reach out to tell me that my characters’ stories have touched their hearts as well.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

This is always a tough question because there are so many wonderful writers out there. But if I have to pick, I would say I really love Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series and Sarah MacLean’s historical romances. Jennifer does an absolutely amazing job of world building and has created an incredibly strong cast of characters.
As a reader, I love wounded soul heroes who finally find happiness in their lives, and Sarah MacLean has done a great job of doing exactly that with her Rule of Scoundrels series.
I think one of the biggest compliments you can pay a writer is to think about her characters and wonder how they are doing long after you’ve finished reading the book. That’s how I feel about the characters both of these writers have created.

If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?

I would assign THE BLUE SWORD by Robin McKinley. A lot of kids love reading fantasies, and this one is on the Newberry Honor Roll. It has a really strong heroine, a sweet romance and lots of adventure in it. The nomadic tribesmen who kidnap her have amazing horses and hunt with big cheetah-like cats, definitely a world I would love to visit myself.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be an English teacher, a librarian, or a writer—all jobs that would allow me to indulge my love of books! On the other hand, I read every book I could find on dinosaurs, so a paleontologist might have been fun, too!

What's the last song that was stuck in your head?

Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson singing “Don’t You Wanna Stay”

What's your favorite quote or scene from Always for You: Jack?

Years ago, Marlene Lukash, Jack’s adoptive mother, made her husband and three foster sons all learn ballroom dancing. There’s a scene where Ricky, the homeless teenager whom Jack has taken in off the streets, makes fun of Jack for loving to dance. Marlene immediately starts pushing back the furniture to make room for Ricky’s first dance lesson as the newest member of the clan. I found the scene to be emotionally powerful on several levels as I wrote it. To begin with, having to learn to dance just like Jack and his brothers had to, Ricky learns that he is becoming a real member of their family. Second, it was a great way for Jack to bring a smile to his mother’s face, who is still mourning the loss of her husband. And finally, because looking back, Jack realizes that the lessons were his mother’s way giving him and his brothers good memories to replace some of the ugly ones from their early childhoods.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I recently bought a small sign for my office wall that simply says “Color outside the lines.” It reminds me that my writing is always better when I let my imagination run wild.
