Interview with Nikki Belaire, author of 192

What can you tell us about your new release, 192?

192 reminds us that happy endings don't come easily; muscled, dirty-mouthed bodyguards can have soft, squishy hearts; and sometimes women whom seem the weakest hide the greatest strength. Roan accepts what he thinks is an easy job - rescue an abused wife from her mobster husband. Until he meets Viviana and decides that she belongs with him. He's patient and loving, hopeful he can overcome the brainwashing and mistreatment to heal his broken princess.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Winter of Our Discontent, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Giving Tree, The Tipping Point

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would love to interview my freshman literature teacher who taught me that you can actually read for pleasure not just class assignments. I'd ask her how big the stack of books on her nightstand is now.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The satisfaction I feel after turning the glimmer of an idea into a seventy-thousand word story. I love the entire process from angst to achievement and all the uncertainty in between.

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

A time machine. History could use some editing. LOL!

What scene in 192 was your favorite to write?

When Viviana explores Roan's naked body. He suffers a painful pleasure while enduring her curiosity.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

When I was young and self-centered as much as I was self-conscious, anytime I would complain about something not really worth complaining about, my mother would always say, "If that's the worst thing that ever happens to you, you'll be lucky." She was right every single time.

Interview with Abby Brooks, author of Come Home to Me

What can you tell us about your new release, Come Home to Me?

Let me start off by saying, I promise you, you'll never look at elevators the same again.

There's a touch of an office romance, some insight into addiction, and a whole lot of personal and spiritual growth for the youngest Carmichael sister.

What books are currently on your night stand?

Oh wow! This one might blow your mind. (And I'm going to count the book I'm currently reading on my Kindle because my Kindle is actually on my nightstand).

Drive by Kate Stewart

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Maia by Richard Adams

A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

As you can tell, I read a bit of everything, though most of my romance reads are on my Kindle. I won't waste your time by going through THAT list because it's massive and never-ending!

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

That's a great question and I had to think hard on it. Marlo Rivers and Ever Montgomery in JA DeRouen's Over duet stand out to me. Those books surprised me big time and I've thought about them more than once in the year since I read them.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My husband. I've spent my life writing and telling stories, but never to publish. My stories were for me. Or for my brother's friends who begged me to spin tales of epic battles and awesome loot for games of Dungeons & Dragons. (Yes, I did it. Yes, I cringe to admit it. Yes, I had fun creating crazy worlds, insane characters, and terrifying monsters.) I raised my kids on bed time stories right off the top of my head and lived for the gleam in their eyes. It was my husband who urged me to publish and I still thank him every day. Without his belief in me, we wouldn't be here right now and I am a big fan of where we are.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

It's like going on vacation every day and spending time with interesting families and people. At the end of a long writing session, it feels like I have jet lag. I need an hour or two to adjust to being back in my life.

What is a typical day like for you?

Between kids, dogs, guinea pigs, a husband, and writing, my days are full! (But whose life isn't, you know?) I'm up at 5:30 to get the kids ready for school. Then I write until they come home from school. Oftentimes, I'm juggling writing with all the admin stuff that comes along with this job--marketing, drafting emails, okaying graphics for teasers, and a million other things I never dreamed I'd deal with. While the kids do homework, I cook dinner. On beautiful days, I work in the garden. My husband and I are learning how to make wine, so you can often find us studying YouTube videos to find out how we ended up with rocket fuel or making a jaw-dropping mess of the kitchen while we work--singing, dancing, and laughing along the way.

What scene in Come Home to Me was your favorite to write?

I think that would be the scene where Sarah has an epiphany eating pizza in Frank's apartment. I had a totally different idea on how that scene was going to play out, but once I started typing, it was like Sarah took hold and moved my fingers over the keys. She had deep thoughts of her own and they were WAY more important than whatever boring old plot I had in mind for her. While the changes to that scene meant I had to make some tweaks to the outline for the rest of the book, I'm glad I followed my intuition and let Sarah take the lead.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Whatever rightly done, however humble, is noble. I saw that one in a grocery store of all places, and I strive to live by it. No matter how big or small a task, I try to take time to do it right.
I believe in random acts of kindness.
I believe happiness is a choice and I fight to make that choice every day.

Interview with Jane Steen, author of Lady Helena Investigates

What can you tell us about your new release, Lady Helena Investigates?

Lady Helena Investigates is my tribute to the lady sleuth genre but with an infusion of Downton Abbey-style saga. I wanted to set a series in the area of England in which I now live (although it’s a fictionalized version) and I was inspired by the beautiful country houses that date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Also, I drew inspiration from the fact that this is the most perfect environment for growing just about everything—so Lady Helena became an herbalist. I immediately saw her as a younger child who is unaware of much of her family’s past, and realized that I had a series in which each of her siblings has a secret—either their own or one they’re keeping for someone else. Add in a mysterious French physician with a truly amazing backstory and I had all the twists I needed to build a series which, I hope, will keep my readers glued to the page. I love to write books that entertain people and keep them away from the TV or the computer.

What’s the last book you read?

I usually read about five books at once, so that’s a difficult question. Should I tell you about the books I’m reading for research, or about the ones I read in my downtime? Or how about my book club book? The interesting thing about my book club is that it takes place in Mundelein, Illinois, while I live in England. They wouldn’t let me leave, so I participate via Skype. Our last book was As Bright As Heaven by Susan Meissner, a novel set against the influenza pandemic of 1918 in Philadelphia, which suffered a high percentage of fatalities. I found it enjoyable but—as anyone who reads my books might guess—I wished it were a little darker. I don’t go for graphic gore and violence, but I like some darkness around the edges of my stories.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Dorothy L. Sayers, the Golden Age detective writer. She took hold of the pulp mystery genre and elevated it by bringing in three-dimensional characters with complex backgrounds and feelings. I’m always looking for that sweet spot between great writing and entertainment—I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive. I love literary writing but refuse to be snobbish about books—I think they’re best when they have plot and pacing as well as good writing.

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Since I mentioned Dorothy L. Sayers, I’d better invite her to the party. I think I’d also bring in Hilary Mantel, because I suspect those two ladies would have one heck of a conversation. Then I’d invite Mary Beard, British classics professor, blogger extraordinaire, and author of many books including Women And Power. I would just sit there listening to these incredibly strong women talk.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The best thing about writing is sharing it with someone else. I love it when readers engage with my writing by leaving reviews or emailing me or asking questions.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

Queen Victoria and her Consort, Prince Albert. I’d like to know if they’re accurately portrayed in biography, film, TV and all the rest today. I’d like it to be a very intimate supper—which probably wouldn’t happen because to be royal is always to be on stage, but this is my fantasy—and I’d like them both to be just a little drunk.

What scene in Lady Helena Investigates was your favorite to write?

Just about any scene that had Helena and her brother Michael, Earl of Broadmere, in it. There was something about the interaction of those two that completely fascinated me. Michael begins the novel with all the power, but his weaknesses are progressively revealed, while Helena starts off powerless (her family nickname is “Baby”, which is suppose to be just as offensive as I want readers to find it) and gradually builds a backbone.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I strongly believe we’re all given a job to do in life, and that we’re happiest when we’re doing it. Both of my series heroines—Nell from The House of Closed Doors and Lady Helena from the Scott-De Quincy Mysteries—are fortunate enough to find the one thing that truly inspires them. Being women they never get all the time they need to do that thing, as family responsibilities intrude—but they follow their path by doing the job in front of them, and I believe that’s what we all have to do.

Interview with R.C. Boldt, author of Ditched

What can you tell us about your new release, Ditched?

Ivy Hayes is an entrepreneur who has a gift when it comes to coaching people on how to flawlessly end a relationship. A non-believer in HEAs, she runs DITCHED, a company in which she helps individuals carry out the perfect drama-free breakup.

Becket Jones is the city's beloved pro-quarterback, but he doesn't buy into his own hype. Down-to-earth and humble, he holds his family and friends in high regard and, well, he believes in HEAs. Surrounded by loved ones who have found their own happily ever afters, he hopes to discover his own.

Ivy presents quite the challenge, and while Becket has never been one to back down from one, it remains to be seen whether he can convince Ivy to give him a chance...or if he'll be the one to get ditched.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne, Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell, Shades of Gray by Maya Banks, Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James, and Beneath This Mask by Meghan March.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

I admire Julie James, Maya Banks, and Lauren Layne as they each possess such a unique ability to weave a story that pulls the reader in and elicits a vast array of emotions.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is how incredible it is to hear the reaction from readers after they've read one of my books and describe how it made them feel or how it provided them a much-needed escape.

What's on your writing desk?

My planner, earbuds, a black extra fine point sharpie, laptop, current story outline, and my thermos of coffee.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

I'd spend even more time hanging out with my little one and husband, quite honestly. Between crazy school and work schedules, it's tough to get the three of us together. I'd love to have an extra hour where we could have more quality time and simply enjoy each other's company.

What scene in Ditched was your favorite to write?

Oh, wow. That's a tough one. I might have to say it's a tie between the initial meeting of Becket and Ivy and the Halloween scene. Both still make me snicker when I reread them.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Live well, laugh often, love much!

Interview with Celia Aaron, author of The Maiden

What can you tell us about your new release, The Maiden?

The Maiden is a particularly dark romance that takes place in a cult. I researched various old school and modern day cults to craft the world of Heavenly Ministries, which is light and bright on the outside but rotten and gloomy at its core. The primary romance is as unlikely as it is hot, and the hero--as always--will be forced to fight for his redemption.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

My top books change, depending on recency, to be honest. But I'd say the Harry Potter books are always a fave, I am Legend by Matheson, The Gate to Women's Country by Tepper, Handmaid's Tale by Atwood, and To Kill a Mockingbird is a forever favorite.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've always been a writer. I just haven't always been good at it. Mr. Aaron is likely the reason for my current career, because he encouraged me to keep going and keep getting better.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Liz and Darcy, naturally.

What is a typical day like for you?

I have a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old, so the early morning is a get-to-school blur. Then I drink a lot of coffee, do some general faffing, and write. I do my best work at night, once my darling/jerk girls are in bed.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

My family. Everything I do is for them.

What scene in The Maiden was your favorite to write?

The very first one. It sort of felt like throwing myself out into the open air, no net, and only a faint map of where I was going.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Fortune favors the bold.

Interview with Naomi Finley, author of A Slave of the Shadows

What can you tell us about your new release, A Slave of the Shadows?

A Slave of the Shadows is my debut novel. The novel is set before the Civil War in the 1850’s in Charleston, South Carolina, and this era in time is one that intrigues me. The strength of humankind never ceases to amaze me.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

My top 5 list would be hard for me to pin down, but, The Mark of the Lion by Francine Rivers and The Empress of Rome by Katie Quinn are on the top of my list.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

My literary heroes are Katie Quinn and Francine Rivers. I admire their style of writing and the genre they write.

What's on your writing desk?

On my writing desk are a candle, a vintage calendar, and a mariner’s compass and an ultrasonic diffuser.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

My world would not be the same without the support of my husband and my two teenagers. Traveling the world with my family and embracing diverse cultures bring me great joy.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

The advice I’d give my teenage self would be that we are the only ones who place restrictions on our lives.

What scene in A Slave of the Shadows was your favorite to write?

I couldn’t point out a specific scene in A Slave of the Shadows that I enjoyed the most. However, I would say that writing Mammy’s and Jimmy’s backstories were my favorite. I feel these chapters give the story depth and help the readers relate to these characters.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The motto I live by is, live life to the fullest with no regrets.

Interview with Winter Renshaw, author of P.S. I Hate You

What can you tell us about your new release, P.S. I Hate You?

It's about a sassy waitress and a broody soldier who meet twice in one day. He's about to be deployed and she talks him into spending a week together before he goes. She then talks him into exchanging letters while he's gone. But after a few months, the letters stop. Eight months later, he comes into her diner and acts like he doesn't know her. I'll stop there because I don't want to spoil the twist!

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've always loved reading and writing! I can't remember a time when I didn't. I cut my teeth on Little Critter books, moved on to Goosebumps and Babysitter's Club and the rest is history.

What books are currently on your night stand?

Midnight Blue by L.J. Shen and a bunch of non-fiction books like Girl Wash Your Face and E-Squared.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I'd host Caroline Kepnes and I'd ask her a million questions because her talent is mind-blowing, but I'd probably start out asking about her process from start to finish.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The escape.

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

Southern California. I love the beach, the sun, palm trees, and gorgeous weather!

What scene in P.S. I Hate You was your favorite to write?

The twist! I can't say anything else about it or I'll give it away.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Nothing quotable. Lately, I've just been in this "you get what you give" mindset. I try to put "good" into the world and most of the time I get "good" back!
