Interview with Naomi Finley, author of A Slave of the Shadows

03 Apr 2018

What can you tell us about your new release, A Slave of the Shadows?

A Slave of the Shadows is my debut novel. The novel is set before the Civil War in the 1850’s in Charleston, South Carolina, and this era in time is one that intrigues me. The strength of humankind never ceases to amaze me.

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

My top 5 list would be hard for me to pin down, but, The Mark of the Lion by Francine Rivers and The Empress of Rome by Katie Quinn are on the top of my list.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

My literary heroes are Katie Quinn and Francine Rivers. I admire their style of writing and the genre they write.

What’s on your writing desk?

On my writing desk are a candle, a vintage calendar, and a mariner’s compass and an ultrasonic diffuser.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

My world would not be the same without the support of my husband and my two teenagers. Traveling the world with my family and embracing diverse cultures bring me great joy.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

The advice I’d give my teenage self would be that we are the only ones who place restrictions on our lives.

What scene in A Slave of the Shadows was your favorite to write?

I couldn’t point out a specific scene in A Slave of the Shadows that I enjoyed the most. However, I would say that writing Mammy’s and Jimmy’s backstories were my favorite. I feel these chapters give the story depth and help the readers relate to these characters.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The motto I live by is, live life to the fullest with no regrets.
