Interview with Suzanne Berne, Author of The Dogs of Littlefield

Tell us a little bit about your new release, The Dogs of Littlefield.

I’ve always loved novels that focus on a place. I also love novels of manners, social comedies, and so that’s what I set out to write in The Dogs of Littlefield. Which I would call a comic novel about menace.

Littlefield is a kind of modern Cranford, a refuge from the conflicts and terrors of the “Global Village,” a lovely suburban New England town. So lovely it has recently been listed on a website as one of the Twenty Best Places to Live in America. It is also home to one percent of the nation’s psychologists—and so has come to the attention of a social anthropologist from the University of Chicago, who has arrived to study the effects of global destabilization on a place that should be exceptionally stable. But coinciding with her arrival, someone begins poisoning dogs at the town’s first designated “off-leash” dog park, subject of much argument and contention. And everything devolves from there.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would love to know what Jane Austen might think of hook-up culture on college campuses. Her view of Donald Trump’s candidacy would also be interesting.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Walking outside with my dog. We could both use the exercise and I like bumping into my neighbors and acquaintances. And since last winter, every day that it’s not snowing in New England is a day to be treasured.

What is the one movie that you can quote the most?

Franco Zefferelli’s Romeo and Juliet. I saw it eleven times when I was a teenager.

What's rocking your world this month?

Unfortunately, I’d say what’s been rocking everyone else’s world—the shootings in San Bernadino, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the videos released by the Chicago Police Department, Syria. Menace and the Global Village have been very much on my mind.

What's your favorite quote or scene from The Dogs of Littlefield?

I like Hedy Fischman’s observation that with an egg you can survive anything.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Well, my father used to say “Onward!” quite a lot.

Interview with Monica Murphy, Author of Never Tear Us Apart

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Never Tear Us Apart.

It's a story of a girl who was kidnapped and eventually saved...by her kidnapper's teenage son. Years later she's on national television talking about her ordeal when the kidnapper's son sees her and becomes immediately obsessed with finding her. The connection they share is too strong to deny and soon they're in way over their heads. All sorts of angsty things happen. This is not what I call a conventional romance.

What's your favorite song lyric?

There are too many song lyrics to narrow it down to just one but can we reflect on the genius that is Drake? I'm still obsessed with Hotline Bling. My favorite lyric from that song is, "Started wearing less and going out more."

What's in your Netflix queue?

My Netflix is used by my children so pretty much everything on there doesn't belong to me. But I did watch something recently - Love, Actually. I adore that movie!

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

My preferred way of spending a rainy day is cuddled up in a blanket with a warm cat on my lap either reading a book or watching a movie. Usually though, I'm at my desk writing a book.

What are you currently craving?

Considering I'm answering these questions a few days before Christmas, I'm craving any sort of holiday treat! Frosted sugar cookies are a favorite.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

I absolutely cannot answer that. There have been too many fabulous couples I've read and can't narrow them down to just one!

What's your favorite quote or scene from Never Tear Us Apart?

Hmm, this was a tough book to write because the subject matter is quite heavy. But I did enjoy writing the date scenes between Ethan and Katherine. I just wanted them to feel like a normal couple which didn't come naturally to them. They have so much baggage between them so when I could inject a light moment into the book, that made me very happy.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

No regrets and the worst they can say is no. I try to ask for pretty much everything they want. If I'm told no I move on. Hey, at least I tried. But if the answer is yes then - score. And I can't regret the things that have happened to me. I've dealt with some really crappy, terrifically hard things (who hasn't?) but I've muddled through and come out on the other side. No regrets because I'm pretty pleased with where I'm at presently.

Interview with Roni Loren, Author of Off the Clock

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Off the Clock.

Off the Clock is the first book in my brand new Pleasure Principle series, a series set at an exclusive therapy institute in the bayous of Louisiana. Think Grey’s Anatomy meets erotic romance with therapists (and celebrity clients.) So drama and secret relationships and office sex. J
The first book is about two sex therapists, Dr. Marin Rush and Dr. Donovan West, who had a one-week affair in college and haven’t seen each other since. Marin had a tragedy in her life after that hook-up and has spent her career in research and her personal life raising her younger brother. But when she loses her grant, she has to take a job at The Grove working with actual clients, which terrifies her since her own sex life has been non-existent. Of course, things only get worse when she realizes she’ll be working with her old crush Dr. West.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

The Motley Crue biography The Dirt? Lol. Or maybe a textbook from college called The Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy. Or the complete works of Shakespeare. I have pretty eclectic tastes, so though my shelves are dominated by romance, I also have a lot of YA, horror, and suspense. I’m also a writer nerd, so you’ll find more books on the craft of writing than is probably healthy.

What's rocking your world this month?

Jane the Virgin. I’m on a writing break after a stretch of nonstop deadlines this year. So I’ve been indulging in some Netflix binges and discovered Jane the Virgin. I can’t stop watching them! Lol.

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

I love the mountains and the view of water—though I’m not particularly a beach person. And living in the south all my life has made me want to escape the heat, so no tropical islands for me. Maybe somewhere in the Northwest where I could get a little of both mountains and ocean.

What will your next adventure be?

Writing wise, I’ll be jumping into book two of the Pleasure Principle series at the beginning of the year, which will have a hero who is a sexual surrogate. That should be a fun challenge! On the personal front, I get to go to Alaska for the first time this year, so I’m really excited about that.

What's your favorite quote or scene from Off the Clock?

There are a lot of scenes I had fun with, including one with questionable use of an expensive bottle of wine, but I think one of the scenes that stands out most for me happens around the “black moment” of the book. The entire book, Donovan has been in the knowledgeable, more experienced, mentor-type role with Marin. But the tables turn during this moment in the book, and Marin calls him out on his weak spots. She doesn’t let him get away with brushing things aside. I love that scene because of her strength and maturity, but I also like it because I got to show the big, bad, alpha hero being crushed by the weight of his own demons and showing vulnerability.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

It’s cliché, but I’m a “Life’s too short” kind of person. Life’s too short to (insert many things): not follow your dream, to stress about little things, to get involved in unnecessary drama, to stay in a bad situation, to concern yourself with how other people want to live their lives if they’re not hurting anyone. It’s the filter I see almost everything through.
