Interview with Melinda Mullet, author of Single Malt Murder
What can you tell us about your new release, Single Malt Murder?
Single Malt Murder is the first book in the new Whisky Business mystery series. The protagonist is a young woman named Abi Logan. A highly respected, globe-trotting photojournalist who suddenly finds herself thrust into the male dominated world of whisky making in rural Scotland when she inherits a distillery from her uncle. Being both inexperienced and a woman she’s harassed and threatened, but she refuses to back down especially after one of her employees is found murdered in a vat of the distillery’s finest. It’s a murder mystery of course, but it’s also a journey of personal discovery for a woman burnt out by her own over-stressed life. In the whisky world she finds a new life, a new mission and a new love.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I’ve always had stories chasing around in my head, but when I was a practicing lawyer I spent so much time writing professionally, for myself and others, I just never had the energy to write for myself. Once I stepped away from the professional writing it opened the page for my own ideas to find expression.
If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?
For young kids, the Paperbag Princess. A great story about a young woman who goes off to save her prince and then realizes she doesn’t need one. For middle schoolers Dealing with Dragons, another great book about young women finding their own strength and wisdom peppered with humor and a bit of fantasy. For older kids and their parents, Animal Farm by George Orwell because it still resonates so deeply today. All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
What advice would you give your teenage self?
Relax! I spent so much time moving from one goal to the next that I missed a lot of life in the process. Amidst all of life’s chaos it is so important to try to live in the moment when you can. To enjoy the life you have while you are striving for the life you are dreaming of.
What's a typical day like for you?
I get everyone fed and watered and out the door by eight am. Then I write for a few hours. Walk the dog and chat about any story line issues that are perplexing me. He’s a good listener, but seldom contributes much. I write a bit more until lunchtime and then it’s the usual madness all mothers will recognize; soccer, scouts, eldercare, chauffeuring and food services. I collapse into bed before midnight if I’m lucky, and start again the next day. Ah, the glamorous life of an author!
BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?
I would love to be able to apperate or teleport depending on whether you’re a Harry Potter or Star Trek fan. To be able to move from one place to the other in the blink of an eye would be so thrilling.
What scene in Single Malt Murder was your favorite to write?
I’d have to say the scenes where Abi is discovering whisky with the help of her dashing head distiller. Like so many people she thinks it isn’t something she wouldn’t like, but she finds that the hand crafting of the single malt whisky is as much an art as her own photography. Both are nuanced undertakings that strive to find the right balance of depth and color and contrast.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
There is a quote from Emerson that I love. “Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day.” I try to share this sentiment with my daughters. Do the best you can each day and don’t let the mistakes and the small injustices you encounter hold you back or make you less than who you really are.

Hot on Ice: Romance Reads For a Cause
I am so excited to be here today! Thanks for having me over to talk about Blade, my story in the Hot on Ice: A Hockey Romance Anthology, and the Homes for Troops charity that sales of the anthology will go to support!
First, let me warn you about Blade. If you like beta heroes, wimpy heroines, closed door sexy times, and boring plots then this is NOT the book for you. Nope. Just skip it in the anthology.
*Counts to 10*
Okay, are all those people gone? Good! Let me tell you about Blade.
Bad girl Gillie Pike has gone straight, but someone with a lot of money wants to bring her out of retirement to steal the championship Cup and make sure it's found in Cajun Rage’s star goalie Flynn Kazakov's possession. They call him Crazy-kov for a reason and nothing makes him more nuts than his best friend’s sexy little sister who swears she’s the only one who can keep him out of jail and on the ice. It’s a fun, fast-paced, sexy second chance love story with an almost kidnapping, betrayal and blueberry beer. In other words, it’s all the things I love in a romance and I hope you do too!
But what’s even better than reading a hot, sexy romance like Blade? If by reading that story you’re helping people in real life. That’s the case with Hot on Ice: A Hockey Romance Anthology, which includes Blade. Twenty percent of all royalties earned from the anthology will go to Homes for Troops, a nonprofit organization that builds mortgage-free, specially-adapted homes nationwide for severely injured veterans.
“Most of these veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI),” Home for Troops states. “These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar has gone directly to our program services for veterans. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives.”
Wow, right? I’m so proud to be a part of Hot on Ice, not just because it’s 18 hot hockey stories by some of my favorite romance authors, but also because it’s raising money for such a worthy charity. Now that’s what I call great reading for a great cause!

Interview with Ivy Smoak, author of Made of Steel
What can you tell us about your new release, Made of Steel?
Made of Steel is the first book in my brand new series. It's a romance-meets-suspense superhero novel. The main character has just entered the witness protection program. She is forced to hide behind the mask of her new identity and easily finds a connection with the New York City vigilante - the only other person who knows how it feels to hide his true self. But her past refuses to stay in the past. The clock is ticking and it's only a matter of time before the darkness tries to swallow her whole. It'll make your heart race in more ways than one
If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?
I would tell them to read a book that they actually enjoy. Being forced to read a book that you don't actually like doesn't do anyone any good. It just makes kids hate reading. But if I really had to choose...I'd say Harry Potter. It's one of those books that has a little something for everyone. And who doesn't like a little magic?
Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?
I absolutely love a good mystery novel. Harlan Coben novels take up a noticeable amount of shelf space. The most surprising thing might be that I barely have any romance novels on my shelf.
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An ice cream truck. I know what you're thinking...what? The actual truck that carries ice cream? I don't know how to explain this one. But when I did a project about myself in kindergarten, I wrote that I wanted to be an ice cream truck and I've never been able to live it down. I blame it on my obsession with ice cream. I'm a weirdo, what can I say?
BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?
I've been thinking a lot about this because of Made of Steel. I think it would be super awesome to be able to freeze time for everyone but myself. It's like being invisible only better...no one can see you plus you have more time. Two for one? I'll take it! If I could just freeze time, write my book all day, unfreeze it and relax I'd be one happy camper.
How do you like to spend a rainy day?
Writing, of course! But that's a silly answer. I spend almost all my time writing. It drives my fiancé crazy. If you were forcing me to relax though, you'd just have to sit me down in front of a TV show that makes me laugh and cry. Give me all the feels and I'll be totally engrossed for hours. Or days. Don't judge me.
What scene in Made of Steele was your favorite to write?
Definitely the ending. The whole book is culminating to this exciting point, and the result is the perfect explosion. Boom. Don't worry...there is no bomb. Although, wouldn't that be a fun ending? Boom...everyone's gone. The end. Is that what's going to happen in Game of Thrones? I kind of feel like it is...
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Not really, but I've always loved the quote - "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it, you'll land among the stars." Trying your best is always worth it.
