Interview with V. J. Deanes, author of Dawn of Affinity

What can you tell us about your new release, Dawn of Affinity?

Dawn Of Affinity is a science fiction thriller. It explores individual identity in a world where humans, human-form robots and human clones co-exist, but are not necessarily aware of each other. It takes place just over a decade from now, in 2029, during the infancy of a less tolerant, early onset dystopian society. The story was written in a style where readers have to join the dots from time to time. This approach allows readers to experience the story with disruption, frantic changes in pace and sudden bombshells of new information as if they were Kalan, the main character.

Where did you get the inspiration for Dawn of Affinity?

Dawn Of Affinity was inspired by current events from the start of the project in November 2015 right up to completion in December 2017. Progress in deploying brain computer interface (BCI) technology. New developments in technologies that enable robots to sense human emotions. Advances in genetic engineering. Progress in machine automation, including human-form robots, are reported regularly in the mainstream media. The pace of generating new science and technology in these areas of endeavor seems to be accelerating. Episodes of terrorism and events that promote an “Us” versus ‘Them” mentality in western society are also covered extensively by the press. Dawn Of Affinity presents one view of what the world might look like when the technology to make synthetic humans meets “Us” versus ‘Them”.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

1984 by George Orwell

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Foundation by Isaac Asimov

If Dawn of Affinity is turned into a movie, who would you pick to play Kalan?

The lead actor would have to be someone young who could bring the tension of Kalan’s character to life. Josh Hutcherson, Denzel Whitaker, Jeremy Irvine and Marc John Jefferies would all be candidates for the screen test.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I have always enjoyed stories involving a great deal of tension, whether they be books or movies, that are told through great ensemble casts of characters. That is probably the biggest inspiration for me to write novels.

What scene in Dawn of Affinity was your favorite to write?

All of the scenes were exciting to write. I don’t really have a favorite. The most fun scene to write was the section of chapter nine where readers are introduced to Millie and Hogan. Hogan adds some over-the-top extra tension to the story, while Millie shows that she has him under control.
