Interview with Jamie McFarlane, author of On a Pale Ship

What can you tell us about your new release, On a Pale Ship?

On a Pale Ship came from an idea that took seed when I started thinking about how major injuries (amputations and the like) would be treated in the far future. For me – the future isn't just about how can we take what we have and make it better – it's more interesting if we look for that quantum leap forward. So in the case of limb replacement, what if the new limbs weren't just good substitutes, but what if they were substantially better – but only in some cases. Drop an evil genius on top of this and all of a sudden, we have genetic experimentation and super soldiers popping up everywhere.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

One of my favorite childhood memories was a conversation I had with my belated mother. I recall saying to her that I could write stories and that I even had some that I was thinking about. She challenged me to make good on that idea and I promised her (at the age of thirteen or so) that 'I sure would.' It was a promise I promptly forgot about as I went about the rest of my life. It wasn't until I was about to turn 50 that Amazon made independent writing a possibility and I decided it was time to make good on that promise. I like to think Mom knows I did.

What's the last book you read?

I've jumped hard into post-apocalyptic fiction. I think the last book I finished was 'Locker Nine' by Franklin Horton. Either that or 'Opus Odyssey' by Boyd Craven.

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

So many to choose from, but John Greystoke aka Tarzan.

What's a typical day like for you?

Writing days are reasonably well organized. I start right away in the morning when I wake up and get settled behind the computer before my wife wakes up. My goal is to get some writing in before she does, but I don't mind being distracted by business things, if they're pressing. After breakfast, I like to get right to writing, the goal being 2 scenes (about 2/3s of a chapter) by lunch with another scene after lunch. Once I get a chapter done in the day – I consider everything else to be gravy and I'll allow myself to be distracted by other issues.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

I think everyone would love to have dinner with a loved one that's passed so I'll mention it, but also let it rest. I think I'd like to spend time with Elon Musk. Here's a guy who thinks big and seems to be constrained by very little, including his imagination. As far as I can tell, he's going to drag us into the future, no matter how hard we resist.

What scene in On a Pale Ship was your favorite to write?

It's a small, mostly inconsequential scene about halfway in. There's an antihero named Jimmy Bang. He comes across as a cheesy, cardboard cutout cowboy. Hiding from responsibility, he's opened up a western melodrama, of which he's the star and does trick shooting. It was fun writing a mini-western in the middle of a space opera.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Everyone has a life story that's worth listening to.

Interview with Angela Blake, author of Falling for the Beast

What can you tell us about your new release, Falling for the Beast?

It's inspired from a love and obsession with Disney movies!

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I love entertaining people. And I do love the written word. It's also always been very therapeutic for me to write. Drains the stress right out of me.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Amy Brent, Rye Hart, and J.K. Rowling.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

Harry Potter (of course), the Twilight series and Dan Brown's entire collection.

What is a typical day like for you?

Get woken by my toddler climbing into my bed. Get up to my 1-year old. Get them sorted for the day with food and dressed. And if I don't have other plans, get straight on to the laptop in my pajamas and get to work! Hopefully if hubby is home that day (he works away), we can eat dinner together, put the kids to bed (eventually) then curl up with the sexiest new release romance from the Amazon Top 100, and fall asleep dreaming about my next characters.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Reading minds!

What scene in Falling for the Beast was your favorite to write?

Definitely the introductory scene where we meet the Beast for the first time. I love trying to get the reader to see him through my eyes.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Always remember to stop and smell the roses.

Interview with Ilsa Madden-Mills, author of Spider

What can you tell us about your new release, Spider?

Spider is an emotional standalone about a British rock star and the woman he can’t forget.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Great question. My biggest inspiration is simply the way I grew up in a house full of books from all types of authors, ranging from Stephen King, Barbara Cartland, Louis L’amour to F. Scott Fitzgerald.

In college, I dabbled in writing but never fully committed to it. It wouldn’t be until several years later, after teaching high school English and working briefly as a librarian, that I took the plunge and self-published my first book Very Bad Things.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Stephen King because…hello…he’s a horror freak and I love his brain. He’s also an expert on the craft of writing, and I’d love to know how he overcomes writer’s block.

George R. R. Martin to ask him why he kills people I love. I wouldn’t ask him when the next book is coming out. Ha.

Since I love British Literature, my last guest would be William Shakespeare, the greatest playwright of all time—Romeo and Juliet, be still my heart. He has to show up in attire from his time period, of course, and I’d want to hear about his personal life (we don’t know much about him), his inspirations, his politics, his lovers, and the Globe Theatre.

What books are currently on your night stand?

Only one:  Emotional Beats: How to Easily Convert your Writing into Palpable Feelings by Nicholas Rossis.

What is a typical day like for you?

A typical day for me is waking up and getting my kids off to school. After that, I throw myself into writing. On a productive day, I’ll get a run in at the park.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Sleep. Duh.

What scene in Spider was your favorite to write?

I love the scene on the airplane. The heroine, Rose, is terrified of flying and the plane has horrible turbulence. Spider, who’s sitting next to her yet doesn’t know her, comforts her by distracting her with crazy questions—and a kiss. He’s a flawed hero who makes a lot of mistakes, but at his core, he’s a beautiful soul.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

“You’re always one decision away from a totally different life…” Not sure who said that but it reminds me that ultimately we are responsible for our own happiness.

Interview with B.G. Cousins, author of The Great Celt

What can you tell us about your new release, The Great Celt?

The Great Celt is my second novel. When I was writing my first book, I didn't envision it to be the beginning of a series, but as it progressed, i continued to add things that indicated some interesting history I could write stories around. Once the Locket was finished, I had to decide whether to write a sequel or delve into some of the historical points and go back in time. I started to read extensively about Ivan the Great and it turns out he was a very fascinating guy in a time of petty princes who didn't have as much power as kings back in western Europe had. Plopping my Rainey character and his sword down into that was exciting as the beginnings of the nation of Russia was just starting to form.

What's the last book you read?

I'm currently reading two books. One is called "Luther's Fortress" by James Reston Jr., about Martin Luther and the beginnings of the Reformation in the early 16th Century. The second book is "The Brothers" by Stephen Kinzer, about Foster and Allan Dulles and their effects on American foreign policy during and after the Second World War. Both books are research for future books I'll be writing. Historical accuracy is very important to me.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Oh, I'd be more inclined to visit a real historical world, such as the Scottish Highlands during the '45 or during Robert the Bruce's time. England after the Roman legions left would also be fascinating.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask them?

I think I'd like to interview Bernard Cornwell. I'd want to ask how he translates his historical research into such fine stories.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Letting my imagination wander. I write in scenes and linking the scenes together into a coherent story can be so exciting, even when it really goes off the rails and I have to stop myself and go back.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Time travel, for sure 🙂

What scene in The Great Celt was your favorite to write?

I think it was when Ludmilla first goes after the Chergins. She's been trained to handle herself by Connor Rainey and she arrives in Novgorod to find assassins attacking her brother's home. She decides to retaliate and discovers that a woman is not paid too much attention, allowing her to get past guards. It is where she invents the legend of Ruslan Tripensky.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

The world will continue to throw you curve balls, but if you stay positive and true to yourself, you can accomplish great things.

B.G. Cousins is the author of the new book The Great Celt.
