Interview with Timoteo Tong, Author of Magic, Monsters and Me

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Magic, Monsters and Me?

I was inspired to write my book when I was at a crossroad in my life and reflecting on my own experience as a teenager struggling with my identity, my dysfunctional family, and the usual trials and tribulations of growing up.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Magic, Monsters and Me, what would they be?

Under the Bridge for Elijah and Fall Into You for Austin.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Interestingly enough I write fantasy books but don’t actually read fantasy books. I usually read romance books!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

So many! Guncle. The Crescentville Haunting, Husband Material...

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When Austin and Elijah go to a bar and Austin, who’s pretty introverted, is not having fun at all and is forced to be there by Elijah. Everything terrible that can happen does!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I always write while listening to music. For deeper stuff I usually listen to music from growing up for inspiration. For lighter stuff I listen to pop or jazz.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Stay Magical, captures the essence of my book. We’re all magical in some way.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That anyone has what it takes inside to battle and win over the scariest monsters.

Interview with JMD Reid, Author of Fractured Soul

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Fractured Soul?

The idea for the story came from thinking about shapeshifters. How they work. How a shapeshifter assassin could be effective by stealing other people's identities. That turned into what happens when the shapeshifter who has stolen all these identities is suddenly free from the organization that employed him. What does he do? Try to get his life back before he was turned into a monster. But what if all the people he killed were still in him? A host of different souls that all want to have their lives back.

Thus was the character created and his story born. So this is the story of No One as he tries to become someone. To be his old self, but can he do that before all these other identities destroy him?

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read is fantasy, which is also my favorite genre to write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson and Into the Narrowdark by Tad Williams.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where No One is fighting against another personality in a battle to see who would win. No One isn't just fighting for his existence but to protect his lover who the enemy personality wishes to kill.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, no quirky ones.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That being a victim is a choice. You are in control of your mind and choose how you face the adversities in your life.

Interview with Barbara Nolan, Author of Salvation/Mamba

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Salvation/Mamba?

The first book with these characters is Beyond Salvation which received a very good response along with many readers asking for more of their story.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Salvation/Mamba, what would they be?

Born to be Wild.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Mystery and suspense!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Two books by Sandra Brown.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When Mamba, the main male character, has a showdown with a female leader of the Mexican cartel.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, not really. I can write just about anywhere, so maybe that is quirky...lol.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Reading is a luxury and writing is a necessity.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope they had fun entering the world I created. I also like to show my characters overcoming the same flaws that we all struggle with in life.

Interview with Lark Holiday, Author of A Darling Handyman

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Darling Handyman?

I have lived in Alaska off and on over the years, and I have so many good memories of my time there. Writing a small town romance set on an island in southeast Alaska was a fun way to both “visit” in my imagination and share what I love about this wonderful place with others!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Darling Handyman, what would they be?

Sarah: What Was by Benson Boone

Will: The Comeback Kid by the Midnight

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I write small town wholesome romance, and I love to read these kinds of books as well! I also enjoy historical romance and wanderlust romance. Recommendations are always welcome!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A Journey Spared by Alexandra Grace, The Singapore Stunt by Mel Walker, and You Had Me At Ice Cream by Angela Pearse and C. G. Lambert.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Confession time! I have a serious problem. No matter what story I am writing, it becomes obvious to me who the next book in the series will be about. And then I start to fall in love with that character! I guess you could say that I have commitment issues haha.

I loved writing the scene where Mac goes to confront Sarah and bring her home to Alaska, thus kicking off the Darling Men series! That’s also a little bit of a hint about book two 😉

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a special perfume that I wear only when I am doing creative writing. For some reason, this ritual instantly puts me in an inspired place and gives me laser focus. Thank you, Sphinx by Riddle Oil!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

We can always start again.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If anything, I want to leave readers with a feeling. I know my books aren’t avant-garde or groundbreaking. I know they won’t win awards. But that’s not why I wrote them. My stories are more of a quiet whisper, a gentle nudge. They have this kind of wholesome, nourishing feeling that we all need more of, or at least I do. Life isn’t always as perfect as it is in a book, but it’s ours, and that’s perfect in its own way.

Interview with Michelle Diener, Author of Ticket Out

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Ticket Out?

I've been thinking about this story for over a decade, a murder mystery series where the main protagonist was a traffic warden on the streets of London in the 1960s. It had been in my head for so long, but when I watched the television series ENDEAVOUR, about a young Inspector Morse, which is set in the 1960s, it inspired me to stop thinking about the books and write them.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Ticket Out, what would they be?

I listened to a lot of 1960s music while writing this book, to get me in the spirit of the era, so I'd choose These Boots Are Made For Walking by Nancy Sinatra for Gabriella, and for James Archer, I'd choose You Really Got Me by The Kinks.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love romantic thrillers, mysteries, as well as fantasy and sci-fi and yes, I write what I love to read.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm going through a re-reading phase right now. When I'm deep into writing a new book, which I am at the moment, I tend to comfort read when I get a chance.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the scenes between Gabriella and her friend and neighbour, Mr. Rodney. Their relationship is so respectful and warm, it was a pleasure to put on the page.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, but I do get cabin fever quite often, pack up my things and go work in a coffee shop, just for a change of scenery.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I try not to get caught up in too much on the extraneous stuff that comes with being a writer, and just concentrate on writing the next book.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I'd love them to feel as if they know and like my main protagonist, Gabriella, and look forward to finding out what happens to her next.

Interview with D. Wolfin, Author of Immortal Templar

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Immortal Templar?

There were actually two different sources of inspiration for this story. The first was an idea I had for a book about a person who was a god, reborn into the realm of the living, without realizing what he was. I spent a long time fleshing out this thought and writing down plot points, even planning the great ball that is a turning point in the book. This story is set in the same universe as Immortal Templar, but it lacked the world building behind it that I wanted, hence why I started with this series instead.

The second inspiration was a collective experience of all the different genres of novels I have read, and what I enjoy. Rather than trying to mimic a specific style or genre, I wanted to create something that encompassed all of what is uniquely me, this time more so than ever before.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Immortal Templar, what would they be?

I don't have a specific theme song in mind, but it would definitely be some sort of violin orchestra.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy and science fiction, through and through. This includes subgenres such as litrpg, but I can be picky from title to title. It is definitely my favorite genre to write. I couldn't even imagine myself writing a romance or thriller.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Ironically, none! I spend so much time working on my books, work, studies, and another side project/learning that I simply don't have the time to look up novels to read, let alone maintain a TBR list.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I want to just go with the stereotypical answer that I like them all, but my favorite ones to write have been Senna's softer moments towards Thomas, especially when she unhesitatingly expresses her care toward him.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

None quirky per se. I tend to alternate between writing on my computer and laptop depending on my mood though, each having their advantages. With my pc, I have a lot of screen real estate for displaying my notes, plans etc. My laptop on the other hand is very convenient for lying on the couch or taking to a cafe or public library.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My philosophy is to focus on being constructive, not destructive. Regardless of political, societal beliefs, etc, to treat other human beings with respect and kindness. Even if we hold differing opinions, we should never partake in conduct that is destructive.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

To leave a review!

Interview with Ava Lock, Author of The Womanoid Diaries Complete Trilogy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Womanoid Diaries Complete Trilogy?

Our hero, Cookie Rifkin, is the traditional woman my mother taught me to be. The villain, Maggie Rouser, is the militant feminist I became in college. Cookie is nothing without Maggie and vice versa. Their conflict came so naturally for me, that the books screamed to be written.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Womanoid Diaries Complete Trilogy, what would they be?

"Make me Feel" by Janelle Monáe.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorites to read have been satire, action/adventure, and techno-thrillers. I think that shows in this trilogy. I'm branching into magical realism and supernatural suspense now, though.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

"Circe" by Madeline Miller.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing all the fight scenes, but may favorite was Cookie taking down all the frogmen and an entire SWAT team on Tabitha's yacht in "Beta Bots."

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I used playlists to tap emotional depths of my characters. I also cast them all as crystals, then arrange their stones in scenes for choreography. Tarot cards get involved. It's a "whole thing." *gestures widely*

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Maybe not so much in words, but I have a huge "Om" symbol as my wallpaper on my laptop. That about sums it up.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Don't take life so seriously, nobody gets out alive.

Interview with Marjorie Duryea, Author of The Marriage Formula

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Marriage Formula?

Experiencing life as a woman in this culture personally, as well as observing the lives of other women. The challenges of juggling personal relationships, family, and career and discovering that having it all is a myth for most. Or at the very least a struggle.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

General fiction; mysteries.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A Gambling Man; Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life; The A to Z of You and Me.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I enjoyed writing the scenes in Chapter 16–The Picnic Rocked.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Writing notes on pieces of paper anywhere I am; and waking up in the middle of the night to write ideas on a digital notepad. I also like to imagine scenes around the characters that never get to the page but help me to flesh out the characters.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Try to be kind, one person at a time. So much else is out of our control...

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There’s no such thing as perfection. It’s an artificial construction.
