Interview with Lark Holiday, Author of A Darling Handyman

14 Sep 2023

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Darling Handyman?

I have lived in Alaska off and on over the years, and I have so many good memories of my time there. Writing a small town romance set on an island in southeast Alaska was a fun way to both “visit” in my imagination and share what I love about this wonderful place with others!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Darling Handyman, what would they be?

Sarah: What Was by Benson Boone

Will: The Comeback Kid by the Midnight

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I write small town wholesome romance, and I love to read these kinds of books as well! I also enjoy historical romance and wanderlust romance. Recommendations are always welcome!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A Journey Spared by Alexandra Grace, The Singapore Stunt by Mel Walker, and You Had Me At Ice Cream by Angela Pearse and C. G. Lambert.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Confession time! I have a serious problem. No matter what story I am writing, it becomes obvious to me who the next book in the series will be about. And then I start to fall in love with that character! I guess you could say that I have commitment issues haha.

I loved writing the scene where Mac goes to confront Sarah and bring her home to Alaska, thus kicking off the Darling Men series! That’s also a little bit of a hint about book two 😉

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a special perfume that I wear only when I am doing creative writing. For some reason, this ritual instantly puts me in an inspired place and gives me laser focus. Thank you, Sphinx by Riddle Oil!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

We can always start again.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If anything, I want to leave readers with a feeling. I know my books aren’t avant-garde or groundbreaking. I know they won’t win awards. But that’s not why I wrote them. My stories are more of a quiet whisper, a gentle nudge. They have this kind of wholesome, nourishing feeling that we all need more of, or at least I do. Life isn’t always as perfect as it is in a book, but it’s ours, and that’s perfect in its own way.
