Interview with JMD Reid, Author of Fractured Soul

14 Sep 2023

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Fractured Soul?

The idea for the story came from thinking about shapeshifters. How they work. How a shapeshifter assassin could be effective by stealing other people’s identities. That turned into what happens when the shapeshifter who has stolen all these identities is suddenly free from the organization that employed him. What does he do? Try to get his life back before he was turned into a monster. But what if all the people he killed were still in him? A host of different souls that all want to have their lives back.

Thus was the character created and his story born. So this is the story of No One as he tries to become someone. To be his old self, but can he do that before all these other identities destroy him?

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read is fantasy, which is also my favorite genre to write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson and Into the Narrowdark by Tad Williams.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where No One is fighting against another personality in a battle to see who would win. No One isn’t just fighting for his existence but to protect his lover who the enemy personality wishes to kill.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, no quirky ones.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That being a victim is a choice. You are in control of your mind and choose how you face the adversities in your life.
