Interview with Megan L. Bradford, Author of Murder in Louisiana

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Murder in Louisiana?

Actual cases of human trafficking and organ harvesting. It remains one of the worst problems we face to this day.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Murder in Louisiana, what would they be?

Lillian-"Life for Rent" by Dido.

Clint- "I Am...I Said" by Neil Diamond.

Amahle- "Private Dancer" by Tina Turner.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love to read thrillers, but I also like to throw some romance novels in there every once in a while.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Gray After Dark by Noelle W. Ihli and The Teacher by Freida McFadden.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I do my best writing at night when everyone else is asleep. Maybe not so much a quirk as a necessity as I have insomnia.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Well, I've read once Stephen King saying his books are the literary equivalent of a Big Mac. I find that inspiring because not every story needs to be a social commentary or a work of literary genius. If it entertains someone and sweeps them away to another place, intrigues them and they are able to live themselves into the story, then it's done its job and then there's honor in what you do.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I'd say the dynamic between Clint and Lillian. Despite how flawed their friendship is and the many challenges it faces, in the end, Lillian is there for Clint through the worst time. I hope in the future they will meet again. Maybe not as lovers but certainly as friends.

Interview with Jeremy Clift, Author of Born in Space: Unlocking Destiny (SciFi Galaxy Book 1)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Born in Space: Unlocking Destiny (SciFi Galaxy Book 1) ?

It's about looking at Earth from Space; what is the relationship between a child born in a space habitat and the Earth she can see all the time, but has not visited.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Born in Space: Unlocking Destiny (SciFi Galaxy Book 1), what would they be?

Dylan Chambers - "I Can Never Get Enough" or David Guetta & Bebe Rexha - "I'm Good"

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Literary fiction and biographies.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

"Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami and "The Passenger" by the late Cormac McCarthy.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The birth of Nevaeh, when the doctor lifts the first of the test tube babies from her incubator.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My desk is a mess

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in. -- Bill Bradley

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The beauty of Earth.

Interview with Emma Jameson, Author of Bones Buried Deep (Dr. Benjamin Bones Mysteries #4)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Bones Buried Deep (Dr. Benjamin Bones Mysteries #4)?

This book was written by popular demand. A few years ago, I left the series hanging due to personal and professional changes. After a few years, I wondered if I shouldn't move on to new projects. But so many readers emailed me, commented on my website, and reached out on Facebook asking for another book, so here it is. I'm glad I wrote it. It's wonderful to be back with Ben and Lady Juliet.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Bones Buried Deep (Dr. Benjamin Bones Mysteries #4), what would they be?

Because this book is set in 1940, I'd say both Ben and Juliet get "Cheek to Cheek" as sung by Fred Astaire. It's even mentioned in the book.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Mystery is of course my favorite, but I read just about everything. From hard sci-fi to magical fantasy to topical nonfiction, I just love to read.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Stranger Times by C.K. McConnell; Ladies' Bane by Patricia Wentworth; Phantom Evil by Heather Graham; The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When Lady Juliet gets into costume, follows some criminals to a black market swap, and decides to collar them herself. I also had fun writing Ben's reaction to it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I need peace and quiet so I go into my writing cave, put in my earbuds, and listen to Brain FM while I work. Every 30 minutes I make myself get up and do something physical--take out the garbage, water the plants, etc. Otherwise, I'd be sitting an awful lot!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Better late than never. I didn't publish my first book until I was forty-two.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

All the historical details are accurate in Bones Buried Deep. Brits on the homefront really did all the things I write about, and much more, during the Second World War.

Interview with Kathryn Trattner, Author of The Dead Saint (Blood and Rubies Book 1)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Dead Saint (Blood and Rubies Book 1)?

I was reading a lot of historical military history and dark romance when two characters I’d been considering for a different novel clicked. It was magical, everything just fell into place and made sense. I love an epic adventure full of danger and enemies to lovers stories so it just made sense.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Dead Saint (Blood and Rubies Book 1), what would they be?

"Hostage" by Billie Eilish and "Was ich liebe" by Rammstein.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love all romance but especially historical, gothic horror, fantasy, and anything history-related. I really enjoy writing fairy tale retellings and epic dark fantasy.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

"Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic" by Tom Holland, "Runaway Queen" by Mila Kane, and "Ten Things I Love About You" by Julia Quinn.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene in the whole book is when Sorcha and Adrian finally kiss. They’ve denied their attraction for ages but finally give in. It was one of the scenes I wrote first and it’s the best.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I wish I could say I have a quirky writing habit. I end up writing the most over my lunch breaks during the week. On the weekends my cat likes to sit in my lap, but writing rarely happens because she doesn’t like the noise and lets me know when it’s time to put the Macbook away.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

You can have as many fresh starts as you want.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope that they will remember that it’s a really amazing epic adventure with the perfect enemies to lovers.

Interview with A.L. Hawke, Author of Witch Mirror (The Hawthorne University Witch Series Book 4)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Witch Mirror (The Hawthorne University Witch Series Book 4)?

Witch Mirror is the fourth book in the Hawthorne University Witch series. It’s a standalone written as the first novel of my new trilogy. Shadow Cast, book six, is being released this week! All three books, books four to six, are new releases. In Witch Mirror, Cadence is a graduate student studying metaphysical history with her husband, Bryce. Bryce is her professor while Cadence is the leader of the Hawthorne witch coven. Both are trying to revive Alondra’s super popular class at Hawthorne University, while also working together in secret to maintain Alondra’s witch coven. There’s a brand new monster Cadence has to fight: the Samhain Witch. She’s introduced in the novella, Samhain Witch, book 3.5. My main inspiration for the book is Cadence’s possession by her former teacher, Alondra. I had already written a novel with a character, Medusa, who talks to herself in my Furies series, so I thought why not bring this same dual identity to the witch series in the form of a ghost possession? So the “mirror” in the title represents Cadence’s struggle with her former teacher reflected inside her.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I write what I read. Paranormal and fantasy romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I got the whole Crystal Cave series on audiobook this month. I figure audio might motivate me to listen on my drive. I’ve been wanting to read this series again for a very long time.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I really enjoy surprising readers. About midway through Witch Mirror, there’s a scene where Cadence is holding a ceremony with her witch group. She’s attempting to get Alondra to leave her. Some very dark magic happens here (no spoilers). I love the action in this scene. Similarly, there’s a really great finale with witches battling one another.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Always coffee and music when writing.

Interview with Acacia Warmerdam, Author of The Wrath of the Broken (The Cursed Series Book 4)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Wrath of the Broken (The Cursed Series Book 4) ?

Listening to a podcast about Marilyn Monroe, and Frea, in my mind, very much holds the same sexual power as Marilyn did. I had also just finished writing the third book and felt the story wasn't quite tied up as much as I would have liked. Not only did I want Eli and Lou from the third book to have a longer storyline, but I also felt as if Drake from the first book was drastically overlooked because he was so much younger at the time, so I made him the male lead this time around. I have a deaf friend, and I wanted to ensure he had a Voice that wasn't just a throwaway character. I think Drake and Frea's bond is unique; I had never written about such a strong female before; not often do you see FL put love aside and save the world first. I had been toying with the idea of doing a shifting book, and I had never read any before besides Van Helsing, so this was my toe in the water for this genre— the shifting part of the story is merely an undertone to the story since Frea is just learning her powers.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Wrath of the Broken (The Cursed Series Book 4), what would they be?

Frea would be- "Labor" by Paris Paloma, "1000%" and "martyr" by KiNG MALA.

Drake would be- "The Night We Met" by Lord Huron.

Princess Lou- "I'll Wait" by Kygo & Sasha Sloan.

Eli- "I Found" by Amber Run.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Horror is my favorite, so it's pretty far from my usual writing style. I have started a romantic thriller, but I was told it's hard to rebrand, so maybe I'll do something with it in the future. But I find writing romance freeing and healing. I am a sucker for anything historical romance, but I prefer it to be dark, which we don't see often enough.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Since we are mid-renovation on a 1910 house that was scheduled for demolition, so all my books are packed in boxes, but I'd like to read the Fourth Wing and jump on that train. I usually reread Jane Austen's Emma every winter, which inspired my first series. I have a few Dramione fanfics I'd like to try out since Manacled ruined me. It mixed romance and Dark perfectly, and I think SenLinYu is doing a rewrite and will publish as a fanfic, so I am excited about that.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Honesty is the best policy, but when Eli explains how to eat an orange to Cully, and Lou gets trapped in the pantry listening, that one is good. I hate to give anything away, but Lou and Eli can be insatiable, so the tree scene is great. I also love the chapters during Frea's 'Games'; how strong she is really carries the book.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not really. When I wrote my first series I wrote the books over 300 pages each in less than two weeks so I was delirious and only ate canned peaches and drank coffee. By the end, I had lines in my fingernails from making myself so sick.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Hard work creates the conditions for luck to flourish.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

No matter your trauma or circumstance, you can overcome it. I grew up in a terrible living situation as a child and used writing as a way to work through my trauma. It didn't break me, and it doesn't have to break you either.
