Interview with A.L. Hawke, Author of Witch Mirror (The Hawthorne University Witch Series Book 4)

22 May 2024

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Witch Mirror (The Hawthorne University Witch Series Book 4)?

Witch Mirror is the fourth book in the Hawthorne University Witch series. It’s a standalone written as the first novel of my new trilogy. Shadow Cast, book six, is being released this week! All three books, books four to six, are new releases. In Witch Mirror, Cadence is a graduate student studying metaphysical history with her husband, Bryce. Bryce is her professor while Cadence is the leader of the Hawthorne witch coven. Both are trying to revive Alondra’s super popular class at Hawthorne University, while also working together in secret to maintain Alondra’s witch coven. There’s a brand new monster Cadence has to fight: the Samhain Witch. She’s introduced in the novella, Samhain Witch, book 3.5. My main inspiration for the book is Cadence’s possession by her former teacher, Alondra. I had already written a novel with a character, Medusa, who talks to herself in my Furies series, so I thought why not bring this same dual identity to the witch series in the form of a ghost possession? So the “mirror” in the title represents Cadence’s struggle with her former teacher reflected inside her.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I write what I read. Paranormal and fantasy romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I got the whole Crystal Cave series on audiobook this month. I figure audio might motivate me to listen on my drive. I’ve been wanting to read this series again for a very long time.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I really enjoy surprising readers. About midway through Witch Mirror, there’s a scene where Cadence is holding a ceremony with her witch group. She’s attempting to get Alondra to leave her. Some very dark magic happens here (no spoilers). I love the action in this scene. Similarly, there’s a really great finale with witches battling one another.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Always coffee and music when writing.
