Interview with J. Kenner, Author of Dirtiest Secret

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Dirtiest Secret.

I adore this book for so many reasons. It’s edgy and sinfully taboo. It’s different, but still definitely a J. Kenner book. It has characters that are screwed up in ways that make for a great story. It’s romantic. It’s intense. And it pushes the envelope in ways that I hope will both surprise and excite readers!

I can’t say too much without hitting Spoilerville, but as for the story — let’s keep this a spoiler free zone and say that although Dallas and Jane have loved each other since childhood, they’re both tormented by the inescapable reality that they absolutely cannot be together. But sometimes, “cannot” just isn’t enough to keep two people apart…

Bottom line, Dirtiest Secret is Dark, DIRTY and delightfully sinful! I really hope readers will fall hard for Dallas!

How much influence has your previous life as a litigator had on your stories?

Not that much—at least not overtly. But I think that you learn a lot or get used to a lot that indirectly applies to a writing career. Deadlines, precision in the copy (every boss I had while practicing law thought—rightfully so—that typos were the devil; some sneak through, of course, but they make me cringe!), the need for clarity in the storytelling. All those things are relevant. And, yes, practicing law is telling a story. If you watched the recent OJ Simpson television show, you really got a sense of how much of what lawyers do is about crafting the story.

On top of that, from a character standpoint, I often have people who are lawyers or in business or entertainment, and my prior career plays to that. I practiced for over a decade and represented a lot of huge corporations, very wealthy individuals, and folks in the entertainment industry. So you pick up bits and pieces that make their way into story and character development.

Which book from your childhood or teenage years has stuck with you as an adult?

So many of them! I read All. The. Time. as a kid. If I was forced to pick, though, I’ll have to go with A Wrinkle in Time.

Do you listen to anything while you write? If so, what's your audio of choice?

Very rarely. And if I do, it absolutely cannot have words. When I do, I’ll listen to the television soundtrack to Sherlock Holmes for action-y things and a “white noise” thunderstorm album for everything else. But that’s usually only if the family is playing the television too loud!

BUT, I do have a playlist of sexy, upbeat songs that I’ll listen to when I’m wandering the house thinking about the book. I tend to just find stuff on Spotify and switch it out. Pink’s Oh My God is very much a Dallas and Jane song 🙂

What or who inspired you to become an author?

It’s my earliest memory—so I guess that means I inspired myself!

What do you like most about living in Texas?

The weather (I can’t stand being too cold!). We were swimming in the backyard when the kids were on Christmas break.

What’s your favorite quote or scene from Right?

Oh, wow. I had such a great time writing this book, that’s really hard to pick. I’m going to have to go with the first chapter, for two reasons. There are two scenes, and the first one is omniscient, which is something I’ve never done before, and it was so much fun to give that “birds eye” view of what everyone at a party thinks about Dallas. And that moves into a scene from Dallas’s point of view that was such fun to write because it starts out so over the top.

After that, there’s a flashback to when he and Jane are fifteen, and that includes their first real kiss. It was great fun writing not only that, but seeing them as kids compared to the adults they grow into.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

This is a surprisingly hard question, because I like mottos and quotes, but I can’t think of one all encompassing one. This one hangs in my office, though, and I think it sums up my overarching philosophy pretty well. It’s from Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Interview with Kelly Jamieson, Author of Icing

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Icing.

Icing is book two in my Aces Hockey series, which revolves around an NHL team in Chicago. The hero of Icing, Duncan Armstrong, is a country boy living in the big city, earning a lot of money and not sure how to deal with the female attention that brings. (Of course, he doesn’t realize that women aren’t only interested in him for his money, he’s actually pretty hot!) He’s just sworn off women when he meets Amber, who happens to have sworn to never get involved with a pro athlete. She grew up with a pro-athlete father who publicly humiliated himself, his family and ended up in jail with his bad decisions.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Can I choose my own world? LOL, I would so love to visit the world of my Chicago Aces, to hang out with the hockey players, to be in the dressing room with them and hear what they say, to have a beer with them!

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

There aren’t a lot of books that I re-read, but I have gone back to my Marian Keyes’ books, and some older historical romance books like Judith McNaught and Laura Kinsale.

Who was your childhood hero?

I don’t remember having a real life hero as a child! But if I can choose a fictional hero, it would be Anne of Green Gables.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

I would absolutely spend it writing. I have so little time, outside the day job and family commitments to my husband, kids and elderly aunts I care for, and so much of it gets sucked up with the business of writing. Much as I’d like another hour of sleep every day, writing is what I most like to do.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

That’s so hard because I love so much about it. I guess I like leaving my real world and immersing myself in a fictional world with people I love. When I’m going through stressful times in real life, when people are making me crazy, that saves me.

What's your favorite quote or scene from Icing?

The scene that was super fun was the one where Amber and her roommate Easton are watching hockey. Neither of them knows anything about it but they keep picking up on all the things the TV commentators say that sound dirty.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time.

Interview with Caroline Fardig, Author of Mug Shot

What can you tell us about your new release, Mug Shot?

Mug Shot is book two of the Java Jive Mysteries series, picking up a couple months after Death Before Decaf left off. Juliet Langley is finally settling in as manager of Java Jive and acclimating to living in Nashville again. She’s got a new guy, but it’s nothing serious — just like she wants it. (And of course it leaves room for former love, Ryder, to try to sweep her off her feet again.) Her nearly-perfect world is marred when her best friend, Pete, is accused of a murder he didn’t commit. She’ll do anything to prove he’s innocent, even risk her own life, to get to the truth.

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

First, I’d ask Marcia Clark, because she is a woman I’ve looked up to since I was a teenager. I watched her handle prosecuting the OJ Simpson case, showing she was a strong woman in a man’s world. Now, she’s a mystery/crime author. I love the snappy, snarky wit in her writing and would love to sit down with her and talk crime and punishment. I’ve been reading a lot of Tami Hoag lately, and I love her way of making each of her many characters totally different through dialogue and action. I’d love to pick her brain to find out how she does it so effortlessly. Finally, I’d invite Stephen King, because…Stephen King.

Which book from your childhood or teenage years has stuck with you as an adult?

The Trixie Belden Mysteries series was by far the most inspiring for me. I saw myself as Trixie, gallivanting around with her friends, solving mysteries, and falling in love. I didn’t know then that I wanted to be a mystery writer when I grew up, but those books definitely shaped me.

You wouldn’t be caught dead, where?

On a rollercoaster. I hate the drop, probably because I’m a control freak and they make me feel so out of control.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

When it rains, my dogs get very sad because they can’t go out and play. It’s a joke around my house how pitiful they look when it rains. To cheer them up, I cuddle up with them and either read books or watch movies.

What's on your writing desk?

It would probably be easier to list what’s not on my writing desk. It’s a mess. My favorite things are my Zen fountain, my coffee mug warmer, and the little clay sculptures my daughter makes me. As for my tech gear, I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro that I use for writing.

What scene in Mug Shot was your favorite to write?

Definitely the one where Juliet’s big mouth gets her thrown in jail. I took a lot of creative liberties with that scene. I know full well that men and women are never locked up together, but I did it for the sheer comedic value. I was on the fence about it, because I didn’t want to make the story too unbelievable, so I asked an author friend of mine, Rick Reed, for his opinion. Rick is a retired homicide detective who caught a serial killer, so he knows his stuff. When I described the scene to him, he said it sounded like fun, and since it is fiction we’re talking about here, that I should go for it.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I have a new necklace I got at my favorite shop in Nashville, A Thousand Faces. It says, “Everything you can imagine is real.” It’s a quote credited to Picasso. In writing, you have to treat your characters as real people so you can delve deep enough into them to make them come alive in your story. Lifelike characters are what make a good book a great book.
