Interview with Laura Marie Altom, Author of Stepping Over the Line

What can you tell us about your new release, Stepping Over the Line?

Honestly, I'd never in a million years thought I'd ever write a stepbrother story, but when my editor suggested it, I thought it sounded fun. I grew up watching The Brady Bunch and always wondered what might happen if Greg and Marsha hooked up!! LOL!! Much to my surprise, the book sort of wrote itself. The hero--Garrett--from my Shamed series, is a grouchy bear (putting it mildly), and once readers see why--because he's been lusting after his stepsister for countless years--they'll understand why. I love all of my books, but this one is especially dear.

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

LaVyrle Spencer, Judith McNaught, Louisa May Alcott. If she minds her manners, may Jane Austin pretty please tag along, too?

What will your next adventure be?

I'm living it!! Now that both kids are out of college, we're getting our home ready to sell with literally no place to land. My fingers are crossed for a sexy, little condo...

Which book from your childhood or teenage years has stuck with you as an adult?

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell, ALL Judy Blume books, hundreds--maybe thousands?--of Harlequin romances!! LOL!!

What's your favorite thing about Oklahoma?

Friendly people!!

What are you currently craving?

Cheetos!!!

What scene in Stepping Over the Line was your favorite to write?

It's a bit of a spoiler, but there are a series of scenes in a park when Savannah sees Garrett after a long absence that really tore at my heart. The awkward factor was off-the-charts for both characters.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Always, ALWAYS, not matter how bad it sucks--take the high road.

Interview with Michele Pariza Wacek, Author of Mirror Image

What can you tell us about your new release, Mirror Image?

It's a psychological thriller/mystery/suspense novel. It actually started as a short story with Elizabeth as the main character (that story is actually still in the novel as one of the "Elizabeth" chapters). After I wrote it, I realized this was actually Linda's story -- and the story actually started after Elizabeth's death.

I wrote the type of book I like to read, which basically means a bit of a mix of genres. It's predominantly a psychological thriller/mystery/suspense novel but there are traces of paranormal as well as a hefty dose of romance.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I taught myself to read when I was 3 years old because I wanted to write stories so badly. Before I could read (or write!) I would "draw" my stories starring characters who I called "happy-faced spiders" (although I have to say they looked more like suns than spiders). I remember always being frustrated because I wanted to actually capture the story with words. It was that frustration which drove me to learn to read. (I used to sit there for hours with "Old Hat, New Hat," pouring over that book to try and connect what I had memorized with the letters and words.)

If you could invite any three people (alive or dead, real or imaginary) to a dinner party, who would they be?

Jane Austen, because I would love to ask her questions about being a woman author back when she lived. Oprah, because I would love to ask her about her mindset and habits to grow her business to where it is today. And Elizabeth Gilbert, because I just know we'd be best friends. 😉 (Even if she doesn't know me from Adam.)

If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it?

Writing of course!

Is there anything you miss about Madison, Wisconsin? (a member of our team is an alum as well!)

It's funny because while there's a lot I don't miss (mosquitoes, cold and humidity top the list) every time I'm back to visit family, it all feels so familiar. It's like coming home. I definitely miss the green (I love the desert and Arizona but man, I do miss the green). And, I miss going to Badger football games in Camp Randall!

What scene in Mirror Image was your favorite to write?

I don't want to give anything away but the scenes near the climax were probably my favorite (and also the easiest for me to write).

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" -- Einstein. Anytime I start getting frustrated or wanting to change something, I start looking at what I'm doing to get there and it helps me shift my actions. (And, yes, it DOES work to start doing different things if you want different results.)

Interview of A.M. Madden, Author of Glass Ceilings

What can you tell us about your new release, Glass Ceilings?

Glass Ceilings holds a special place in my heart. Nick and Angela's story takes the reader on a journey of truth. Love isn't always cut and dried, easy, or predictable. Sometimes true love needs forgiveness and absolution in order to survive. Glass Ceilings forces the question, could you truly forgive someone and not have it affect your feelings for them?

What’s the last book you read?

I just read Mr. O by Lauren Blakely. Great read.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My love for a great romance. I am a self proclaimed romance junkie. I can't get enough of it whether in books or in movies or even in real life stories, aka reality TV. (Yes, I'm a bachelor junkie too!). I absolutely love hearing about finding love.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

My family. My husband and sons are the center of my world. And now, my new career. I'm not a writer, I'm a reader. Having this opportunity to tell my stories is an absolute dream come true for me. My family has been so supportive throughout this process, and it fuels me to continue on with my dream. I may have found it later in life, but now that I have I thank God every day for these blessings.

What's the last song that was stuck in your head?

Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen, mainly because I'm listening to it as I type. But then again, I'm always listening to one of his albums. #JerseyGirl to the core.

What's the best thing about a story with a happily-ever-after?

As a reader, for me it's being left with so much hope. I love that feeling. As an romance writer, it's a sense of accomplishment. Does that sound crazy? With each HEA I write, I feel more complete as a romance author.

What scene in Glass Ceilings was your favorite to write?

The New Year's Eve kiss. It's the very moment things change for Nick and Angela, and it's that moment when you can feel everything Nick is feeling as he takes her lips for the first time. It's also a perfect first kiss.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Things happen for a reason. I was laid off from my job of 24 years and that's what started my journey as a writer. It was simultaneously the most terrifying and the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm not sure if that life-altering event hadn't happened if I'd be where I am now.

Interview with Erin McCarthy, Author of Heart Breaker

What can you tell us about your new release, Heart Breaker?

Heart Breaker is a second chance romance between a sassy country star and her hot songwriting partner. Lots of laughs and sexy times.

What's on your writing desk?

Right now my office is being redone so my writing desk is the kitchen island. So there is an HGTV magazine, a water bottle, coffee mug, and the TV remote on it.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Without a doubt Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett.

What is a typical day like for you?

I get up at 7:30 (my husband gets up at 5am but that's a hell no for me) and let the dogs out, feed the cat, start the coffee. Then I check email, sales numbers, social media accounts. I'm writing by 9:30. I break for errands, household tasks, lunch, then write again until about 3. Then I work out and switch to personal time.

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

Something that would allow me to eat whatever I want without gaining weight. 😉

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A writer. Seriously. #dreamscomestrue

What scene in Heart Breaker was your favorite to write?

The opening scene. I just loved Jolene's voice right from the first word.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I'll either find a way or I'll make one.

Interview with Sawyer Bennett, Author of Sugar Daddy

What can you tell us about your new release, Sugar Daddy?

This is very different from other books I’ve written. It’s very twisty and a little on the dark side. Sela Halstead is looking to exact revenge, but she gets sidetracked instead by her intended victim’s business partner. She has to weigh her passion to vindicate herself versus losing someone who has become extremely important to her. And sometimes, there are no right answers. Oh, and it’s really, really sexy!!!

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Maggie and Clay from Find You In The Dark by A. Meredith Walters. The level of devotion she had to him is inspirational, especially given his mental issues.

What’s the last book you read?

Magnificent Bastard by Lili Valente. It was awesome!!!

Say you now host a literary-themed talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you ask that person?

Hands down, my first guest would be Dean Koontz. My first question would be, “Do you feel guilty for giving me the wiggins every time I read one of your books?”

What's the best thing about meeting fans of your books?

I especially love to hear if a particular character touched them in some way. It lets me know I’m doing my job well.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

With my two year old daughter, Parker. She loves to be tickled for some weird reason. She’ll laugh hysterically while I’m tickling her and when I’m done, she says, “Again.” I could do that for an entire hour!!!

What scene in Sugar Daddy was your favorite to write?

The very last scene...it ends on a shocker that will make your stomach drop. I had that scene in mind from the very moment I came up with the idea for this story.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I have a ton that I repeatedly quote, but I think the best one to live by is the Golden Rule… “Treat others the way you wish to be treated”.
