Interview with Christina Tetreault, author of The Billionaire's Homecoming

What can you tell us about your new release, The Billionaire's Homecoming?

The Billionaire’s Homecoming is the 11th full-length novel in my Sherbrookes of Newport Series. However, it ties in directly with my other series Love On The North Shore since it is set partially in North Salem. Like my other books in the Sherbrooke series, this one features one member of the family. In this case that member is Brett Sherbrooke.

Brett is a West Point graduate who has dedicated his life to serving his country. Recently though he’s decided he is ready to serve in a different role, and he moves back to Massachusetts intending to run for the United States Senate the following year. However, when the governor calls a special election to fill a suddenly vacant Senate seat in Washington, Brett’s plans make a detour.

Jennifer Wallace is the assistant leader of her niece’s scout troop. When the troop started sending care packages to the troops overseas, she never expected billionaire Brett Sherbrooke to be on the receiving end. For the past two years, though, they’ve stayed in regular contact and grown close.

With his relocation back to Massachusetts, both are ready to see if their friendship can turn into more. Despite the challenges posed by Brett’s hectic campaign schedule, everything soon indicates another Sherbrooke is off the market. That is, until Brett’s opponent uncovers secrets from Jennifer’s past. Secrets that threaten to destroy their relationship and his political aspirations.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

This is a difficult question and I must admit my list has changed over time. Books I absolutely loved ten years ago, I have trouble getting through now. Some books that I have read countless times though include:

Ransom

If I Had You

The Heir

Romancing Mister Bridgerton

Prodigal Prince Charming

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

I’ll be honest I don’t have any literary heroes. They are authors out there I love to read and I will buy almost anything they publish, but I wouldn’t call them my heroes.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love that when I am writing I can create a wide range of characters with different back stories, and personalities and then put them in various situations.

What is a typical day like for you?

A typical day for me is most likely similar to any other working parent. I make sure all three children get ready and off to school. Once they are gone, I retreat to my home office and work until the bus drops the girls off except for the one morning a week I volunteer at the elementary school. The rest of the day and night is left to getting homework done and driving to one activity or another.

What scene in The Billionaire's Homecoming was your favorite to write?

For the most part, I enjoyed writing the entire book. However, I think the scene I enjoyed the most was near the beginning when Jennifer and Brett finally meet face to face for the first time. Until this point they’ve only exchanged letters and text messages and I loved the way Brett picked up on how nervous Jennifer was and set out to help her relax.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

My personal philosophy and the one I have tried to install in my children is always do your personal best and try not to worry about what everyone else is doing. At the same I try to treat everyone regardless of whether I agree with their views with respect.  In my opinion is okay to disagree with a person but there is no need to be rude or judgmental.

Interview with Will Patching, author of The Hangman

What can you tell us about your new release, The Hangman?

The Hangman is the final explosive ‘standalone’ thriller in The Hack Trilogy, continuing the overarching concept that runs through each of these three tales:

The abuse of power and privilege by our pampered elites and the impact their evil misdeeds have on others less fortunate.

Throughout this mini-series we follow the adventures of ex-CIA assassin, Doug Hunter, a man with particular skills. This time he’s up against unelected officials on both sides of the Atlantic who are determined to provoke an illegal war with Iran. While Doug is attempting to defy death and prevent slaughter in the Middle East, the other hero of the trilogy, his pregnant lover, journalist Kate O’Sullivan, gets caught up in the worst terror attack ever carried out on British soil – a gruesome chemical weapon that kills hundreds of innocents.

Although the manuscript was drafted long before the Skripal poisonings, when the word ‘Novichok’ entered the British lexicon, The Hangman reflects such current world events in a way that I hope will prompt the reader to question the official narratives our leaders and media promote. Featuring conniving politicians, devious spooks, fanatical jihadis, vicious mercenaries, corrupt officials and more, my aim was to create a gripping international crime thriller full of evil deeds and selfless heroism while giving the reader something to think about.

According to early feedback, it seems ‘The Hangman’ has hit the spot. I would never compare my writing to any other author but I will admit I was delighted when professional editor, James Jones of Proof-EDGB, said this about my latest thriller:

“Fantastic book... Now I will be going back to a Jack Reacher novel I'm reading. It has lost some of its appeal after reading The Hangman.”

I’m really looking forward to hearing what other readers think – I welcome feedback, and try to reply to everyone who contacts me with comments.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

At the age of fourteen or fifteen I won first prize in a tri-county writing competition. It was just some boring stuff about banking, but as a teenager you think you can do anything and after winning that contest I arrogantly believed I could write a thriller as good as any I’d read.

Mmm.

My precocious but pathetic first attempt died a death at several thousand words, and I'm pretty sure they’re still buried in an attic somewhere in the UK. Best place for ’em, I reckon.

Soon after that failed attempt, girls, exams, university, family, and having to earn a living all got in the way of my criminal writing intent. Many years later, and after much wasted effort and numerous false starts, I discovered Stephen King’s ‘On Writing’, a semi-biographical guide for writers. That fascinating and enlightening read was a major inspiration for me, and a book I would recommend to any aspiring author.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stephenson. ‘Visit’ being the operative word, though…

Living in a time of blood-thirsty empire and cut-throat pirates only appeals when you can click your fingers and escape back to a time and place where a tooth infection won’t kill you and there are laws that most people abide by. I am officially a wimp!

As an imaginative young kid, having read this and other similar adventure tales, I dreamed of living on a ‘paradise island’, and for most of the last seventeen years I’ve managed to do just that. Sadly, I’ve yet to find any treasure, buried or otherwise.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask??

Thomas Harris as I loved the Hannibal Lecter series, including the film and TV adaptations. These are works of sheer genius.

Both The Hack Trilogy and my other mini-series, The Remorseless Trilogy, feature psychopaths, a class of criminals I’ve studied in depth as I find them fascinating. If I could quiz Harris on his brilliant creation, Hannibal the Cannibal, and discover what inspired him to write those four classic novels about a psychopath, and why it took him 25 years to do so, I’d be a very happy interviewer.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

That’s easy.

Although in a way, writing a novel is a little like being a god creating worlds and the characters who populate them, the most exciting thrill for me is when my ‘imaginary friends’ come to life.

Unlike some novelists, I don’t start off with a detailed synopsis, with each chapter outlined and character biographies written in advance. Instead I use King’s approach and set characters running while keeping several strands of plot in my mind.

At times, it’s almost as if I’m observing the characters and merely describing what they do rather than directing them, and when that happens, it’s incredibly satisfying. Sometimes they surprise me with what they do or say, and that too is a real thrill. It can cause problems though and may necessitate a re-write of earlier chapters or scenes, but I enjoy this style of writing and it works well for me.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

I’d have to be Doctor Cure-All, a physician who can eliminate diseases of any description. I’ve seen close relatives suffer from dreadful, debilitating, painful illnesses like terminal cancer, and a few decades ago lost a child to cerebral palsy after she struggled for life during her two short years on the planet. Many such illnesses are simply cruel and if I could eliminate them, I would.

What scene in The Hangman was your favorite to write?

That’s a very difficult question as I enjoyed writing them all.

If I have to pick one scene, I guess it would be the death of a jihadi who succumbs to the terrorists’ own bioweapon – a form of poetic justice, if somewhat gruesome in its delivery. Sometimes I write a scene that makes me shudder, and that one certainly set my spine tingling.

My style has been described as ‘pull no punches’ with occasional ‘brutal descriptive passages’, so doesn’t suit all readers. I sometimes kill off main characters too, simply because, in the real-world, that’s what happens. True-life heroes aren’t bulletproof and my novels reflect that reality. There’s a scene in The Hangman where a significant character dies – it’s not the scene I ‘enjoyed’ writing the most, but it certainly choked me up and had me shedding a tear or two for my ‘imaginary friend’. Sad, but true!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Yep.

Dare to be different.

Too many of us are chained to the treadmill that is modern life, with demanding careers and family expectations, hefty mortgages and student loans, and it’s all too easy to slip into a soul-destroying rut without realising – until it’s too late.

My view?

I won’t let the dreaded ‘what would such-and-such say?’ stop me from changing my life. Seems to me that we only live once, so we need to make the most of what little time we have on this beautiful planet without constantly fretting about what others think of us.

Does that sound odd, coming from  an author who relies on reviews from strangers to help spread the word?

Maybe, but when I write, I do so primarily for myself – always with the hope that others will enjoy reading the tales I create. As a result, I’m always amazed and gratified when I receive positive feedback and five-star reviews, and I really appreciate my readers’ support and faith in me. Long may that continue, and whether it does or not, I’ll keep on writing until I can no longer hold a pen!

Interview with T.J. Mines, author of Siege

What can you tell us about your new release, Siege?

Siege is the continuation of the story started in Du Bois. The town has been saved from covert attacks, so now the rivaling town of Al Bari wants to take Du Bois by force. The President of Al Bari sends his most feared general: The Butcher.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I have a writer in the family and we have had a family newsletter for more than 25 years where my father wrote children’s stories for us kids. I, too, wrote a story there, but thought that earning a living as a writer was not for me. Now, with the digital age of publishing, I find that I can do things my way and feel that I do have a chance to write good stories and get them out to my fans.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

I would love to be able to do what Ender does in the books by Orson Scott Card. In the later books set in the story, Ender was able to travel through chaos space. That sounds very cool. I’d visit all the countries in the world if I were able to do so.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Johnny B. Truant and Sean Platt (and David Wright , but he won’t come). I want to ask them how they plan to continue their incredible synergy and what they have planned for the years to come.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Experiencing the story first hand. I plan my books ahead, I have most of the Frozen Apocalypse series planned out, but only in high level. I love that when I write, I surprise myself with cool new plot twists. I get all excided when something happens and it gets me into a writing frenzy where I go off in a direction I never thought possible. Even if it alters the rest of the story.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

My superpower would be that I am proficient in every language that ever existed, written and spoken.

What scene in Siege was your favorite to write?

The one I called “World of Goo” while planning. Ismael and Jo-Ann, the main characters in Siege, investigate a terrorist attack on the food stores of Du Bois. I used the video game “World of Goo” as an inspiration.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I like the live by the philosophy that if you do something, you do it right.

Interview with D.M. Davis, author of Until You Set Me Free

What can you tell us about your new release, Until You Set Me Free?

Until You Set Me Free is my debut novel and also the first in my Until You Series, which is about seven men. Some are related by blood, but all of them are brothers, bound to each other by friendship, circumstance, and a love and respect that goes beyond family. The series chronicles the challenges and joys of finding their true love through the eyes of each of the seven men and the ladies lucky enough to draw their attention and possibly their hearts.

The series begins with Joseph McIntyre, the youngest McIntyre brother and one of the heirs to his family's tech empire, McIntyre Corporate Industries. Joseph is focused on finishing college and beginning his career at MCI. He's not interested in romantic entanglements of any kind until the fateful day he meets Samantha Cavanagh, his roommate's sister.

Sexy girl-next-door, Samantha, buries herself in her high school studies, focusing on graduating early from college and heading into a successful tech career. She’s sassy and confident in all things, except when it comes to men, particularly a man named Joseph McIntyre.

Until You Set Me Free is an emotionally charged romance, intertwined with tragedy, that force Joseph and Samantha to choose between their careers, their hearts, and the safety of the ones they love. This is book one in their three-part epic love story that continues in Until You Are Mine and Until You Say I Do.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

Tons and tons of religious and educational books that are crazy old and most likely completely useless. I’ve always loved books. Holding them. Smelling them. Considering the impact they may have had on the previous owner’s life. I’ve dreamt of having a library, the kinds you see in movies. Wall to wall books, where you have to use a ladder to access the second story. Can you image—a second story? My grandmother and an aunt were both teachers and descended from ministerial backgrounds. They were book hounds and I was lucky enough to inherit their books. I even have an 1808 copy of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. From the hardcover volumes of Reader’s Digest, to the religious books, to the Longfellow, most are completely useless but they are priceless to me for their sentimentality of who they belong to and the fact that they simply exist. My family gave me the love of books, and I cherish each and every one of them.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

The voices in my head? It makes me sound crazy. I know. This is a second career for me, and I don’t know why it took me so long to figure out that this is what I was meant to be doing. I’ve always had stories in my head, even as a little girl. But I never once wrote them down or dreamt of giving them life outside of my imagination. Then a few years ago, after returning to reading after a long absence, I woke up one day with a complete story in my head and decided to write a book. I wrote that book in two and a half months and it was 380,000 words. Then I wrote the sequel, and the third in the series, and still the stories just kept coming, each of them as large as the first. But I was new to writing and the idea of getting a book published was rather daunting and intimidating. So I put that series on hold and started a new series, more standard in length for what the romance market desires. That series is Until You.

My first series that is of epic length, is my Finding Grace series. I plan to revisit it soon in hopes of publishing book one later this year.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

I’m going to go against the grain here. Anything I could say about the classics has already been said and probably much better than I could say it. So, I’m going to go with a current day couple, one who touched me deeply and stays present in my mind. And let me just say that choosing is not easy. I have three favorite couples and choosing one is like picking my favorite child—it’s wrong and shouldn’t be done (or at least said out loud. 😊). So I’m going to cheat a little, I’ll pick one but share the other two couples with you, as well. It eases my guilt a bit.

Jericho (Barons) and MacKayla (Mac) from the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning are my favorite couple. I’ve never had characters stay with me like these two. This isn’t even a typical romance series, it’s fantasy with bouts of romance. And I crave every single second of interaction between these two. Barons’ background is tragic with devastating consequences. He is dark and broody. His presence demands attention and his confidence and aloofness pull at me like a bee to honey. Mac is Barons-light. She is dark in her own way, but she shines like a beacon, pure of heart and full of good intentions. Her background is only recently tragic. That brings her to Barons, and thus begins their epic romance fraught with peril, death, and mayhem, yet also full of hope and love. These two belong together. I laughed and cried my way through book after book to see that they found their happiness—Barons and Mac style happiness—with lives that are as epic as their love.

Runner Up Favorite Couples:

Hudson and Alayna from The Fixed Trilogy by Laurelin Paige

Gideon and Eva from The Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is getting lost in the lives of my characters, forgetting that they are simply a figment of my imagination and only live on the page. For me, they are friends and family that I get to experience from the inside out. I laugh and cry as I write their journey and pray, just as readers do, that they find the happily-ever-after they deserve. That we all deserve.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

If I’m not on deadline, and if I’m alone, I’ll spend it reading a book, getting lost in the world of the characters. If my family is home, then we’ll spend it watching a movie, cuddling on the couch, and sharing in the experience of getting lost in that visual world on the screen. Then I’ll cook, and we’ll watch another movie or have game night (board games, no electronics).

What scene in Until You Set Me Free was your favorite to write?

Honestly, any scene where Joseph and Samantha interact. As a reader, I crave that intimate (I don’t mean sexual) connection between characters. The yin and yang, pull and take of dialogue between them. I can’t pick just one scene, but I really enjoyed writing the Thanksgiving week where they first met and try to wrangle in their attraction for each other. It’s steamy and full of angst, and we get to know the two of them as individuals and what they could be like as a couple.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

My two primary beliefs are: it’s never too late, and if you don’t try it’s a no anyway.

I’ve posted a few things on it on social media over the past year or so around these ideals and thought I’d share as I’m a visual person and maybe your readers are too.

It’s never too late.

It’s never too late to ask for more. To expect more. To strive for more. It’s never too late.

Interview with Catherine M Walker, author of Shattering Dreams

What can you tell us about your new release, Shattering Dreams?

When people asked me to tell them about my book I didn’t know how to answer, my first response generally started with...

‘Well, its a little complicated….’

Shattering Dreams follows Alex and his friends, Jess and Kyle in a word where where they live a seemingly privileged life of wealth with none of the responsibility. They live to party and escape the confines of the palace and their guards as often as they can.  Yet under the surface their ability to manipulate the veil could put them on the path of becoming legends, the stuff of dreams and aspirations or transform them into the Sundered, monsters from their nightmares.

There are several themes yet it is essentially about friendship, adversity and that no matter how perfect someone else life looks on the surface we all have our demons we must face.

What books are currently on your night stand?

To be honest none.  I don’t read in bed since I learned long ago that if the book is any good I’ll stay up most if not all of the night reading.  I do have a few in my must-read pile, I’ve fallen behind a little since I’ve been writing.

  • Jennifer Fallon, War of the Gods Trilogy
  • Trudi Canavan, Millennium’s Rule, book 3 Successor’s Promise
  • Patricia Briggs, Alpha and Omega, Burn Bright
  • Kevin Hearne, Iron Druid Chronicles, Scourged
  • George R.R. Martin…… that certain book in a certain series we are all waiting to read.  It will go to the top of my list as soon as it comes out.

There are more I am sure but I’m too afraid to look and see what has come out while I’ve been preoccupied writing Shattering Dreams.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

As a child in primary school, before I discovered science fiction and fantasy, reading was dull and boring.  I didn’t really care what Nip and Fluff were up to.  Then I discovered Star Wars, A New Hope on my brothers bookshelf, I had no idea before that moment that they made interesting books.  I loved movie, at the time I could repeat it verbatim.  For the first time I took a book off the shelf that I didn’t have to and settled down to read.

From there I went on to authors like Azimov, Tolkien, Herbert, Feist, McCaffrey, Eddings and Martin to name a few.  They managed to transport me into their worlds.  I was spellbound by them, there was no going back nor would I want to.

For the what I guess it was when I started writing a short story for a competition with a friend in high school. We wrote it together, about six exercise books later we both realized that perhaps the short story was a little long.   Being an Author and publishing was a ‘one-day’ dream that stretched back to that time in high school.

What's on your writing desk?

Oh you would ask that, thankfully you can’t see my desk!  There are the usual things you’d expect to see.  My 27 inch iMac, that screen size really comes in handy in the re-writing/editing phases.  There is a printer on one corner and an organizer on the other.  A bottle of water which I fill from the tap whenever I finish it and of course a cup of coffee.

There is a small stack of the hardback copies of Shattering Dreams, with ribbon, cards, tissue paper and some packing boxes.  I’m giving them as presents to the people who helped me along the way.

The other rather prolific thing that seems to multiply of its own accord is post-it notes.  I have them stuck everywhere with details from Shattering, characters, places, events things like that.  I’m in the middle of culling them and rewriting some of the scrappy looking ones that I might need in preparation for book 2, Path of the Broken which is 25k words in so I need to start keeping track of everyone.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Seeing my characters, their world, their lives expand and come to life.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

There are so many that would be great to have but if its only one power I’d probably choose teleportation.  Although its not for any altruistic reason.  I love travel, seeing new places and cultures.  Being able to appear at the sun gate and watch the dawn light up Machu Picchu, having that idol thought that it would be nice to have breakfast in Paris, stop by the Pyramids in Egypt, then join friends for dinner in New York.  Only to find my way back home to sleep in my own bed after a day of adventure.

What scene in Shattering Dreams was your favorite to write?

Thankfully there were a few scene’s that I really enjoyed.  Otherwise it would have been a very painful process to write the book.

One of my favorites would be towards the beginning where they escape the confines of the palace and head into town.  They end up in a bar, one of their favorite haunts and settle in to party.  It was fun to write, showing the contrast between their confined lives at the Palace and the more carefree life, stripped of the constraint and obvious trappings of wealth and power.

I really enjoyed writing Jess’ part.  I wanted her to be free from the usual constrained, meek, mild and proper female of high birth.  For her to be as wild in her own way as both Alex and Kyle.  To take her away from the stereotype.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Simply to live my life.

It was advice my grandmother gave me and reinforced by my parents. That if I wanted to do something not to let anyone tell me I couldn't. She said it was the saddest thing to go into old age regretting all the things she didn’t do or even try and achieve, simply because people told her it wasn’t appropriate.  She told me I lived in a different era to her and she made me promise not to make that mistake in my own life.
