8 Books to Give Your Dad on Father's Day

Dad. Pops. Dada. No matter what you call him, you're going to celebrate his greatness on June 21st. If your dad is a bookish sort of father, the kind that would read you bedtime stories, and always has a book on the back of the toilet ( just our dads?), think about getting him some of these great new releases.

 Finders Keepers - Stephen King:

You only need to know the author’s name to get why your dad will love this , but if that’s NOT enough here’s a few more reasons. This action packed read showcases a vengeful reader, a murder, a buried treasure and a wild chase.

Book of Numbers - Joshua Cohen:

Cohen's novel is one of the most buzzed about books of the year gaining accolades from NPR , the New York Times , and the Washington Post, just to name a few.

Elon Musk - Ashlee Vance:

While Elon Musk may not be the poster boy for a perfect personal life, however his business life is one for the books, very literally. Musk is arguably one of the most innovative figures of the 21st century, and this book gives a look into his fascinating world.

Your Baby’s First Word Will Be Dada - Jimmy Fallon:

Fallon’s comedic genius shines in what is at its core, his own earnest attempt to get his daughter to say DADA first. This book is ideal for those who are fathers to be, those who are new fathers, and the fathers who are nostalgic about the past.

Radiant Angel - Nelson DeMille:

Dad’s who lived during any part of the Cold War era or enjoy thrillers will resonate with this modern day retake of those gripping years.

A Perfect Crime - A Yi:

This chilling tale takes one into the mind of a killer and provides an alternative to thrillers centered around American characters.

We Are All Made of Molecules - Susin Nielsen

Delving into the YA genre provides a connection between parents and children by remembering how it felt to be young. This book in particular provides an empathic viewpoint on how children are forced to cope with decisions that parents make.

The Boy Who Played with Fusion - Tom Clynes:

Every parent has dreamed of his or her child becoming someone who achieves greatness. This biography details the scientific pursuits of a 19 year old, and the extreme parenting behind raising a prodigy in nuclear physics.

JK Rowling New Book: Update on Release

JK Rowling is known the world over for her popular and much adored Harry Potter novels. When the final book of the Harry Potter series was released in July 2007, fans shared a collective sense of sadness, marking it the end of an era. The question on everyone’s lips was: “When will JK Rowling release a new book?” Those who thought Rowling’s writing days were over were ecstatic to find that in 2012, the author had been hard at work writing once again. Since then, Rowling has released 3 novels in addition to several short stories through her website, Pottermore. Keep reading to check out what’s been done and what’s yet to come from JK Rowling. The JK Rowling new book is not to be missed!

JK Rowling will release CAREER OF EVIL, her third novel under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, on October 22nd.

This book will be the third in the Cormoran Strike series.

What else has JK Rowling released since Harry Potter?

The Casual Vacancy

Serving as her first novel since the Harry Potter series, The Casual Vacancy was Rowling’s initial attempt at writing adult literature. Released in July of 2012, it quickly rose to the top of book charts and boasted record sales numbers. The Casual Vacancy is an ambitious novel that looks at local government in modern England, featuring overarching themes of class, poverty, and other social issues.

Cormoran Strike Crime Series

Rowling went in a different direction for her next literary endeavor, writing a crime series under the pen name “Robert Galbraith.” The first novel of the Cormoran Strike series, The Cuckoo’s Calling, was released in April 2013, followed by The Silkworm in June 2014.

It seems that Rowling plans on much more to come in this thrilling series, and her faithful fans can’t wait to see what mystery they get to dive into next!

Continuing the World of Harry Potter

The world of Harry Potter continues on in the series's absence through Rowling’s own Pottermore website. Fans are able to participate in an array of activities, and are given access to short stories featuring some of the books’ more minor characters. After creating an account, users can read stories written by former headmistress Dolores Umbridge (pure evil, by the way) and wizarding crooner Celestina Warbeck.

Also available in the Pottermore Store are books set in Harry Potter’s wizarding world, including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. These books are written as if they are textbooks for the students at Hogwarts, and provide background knowledge on some of the readers’ favorite topics.

Whether you’re interested in the new stories JK Rowling has to tell or want to continue on in the fantasy world of Harry Potter, it seems she’s got new things coming for everyone. We’ll be keeping an eye out for her new novels and we’ll let you know as soon as a new JK Rowling book is released.

Interview with Linda Lael Miller, author of The Marriage Season

#1 New York Times Best Selling Author Linda Lael Miller is at it again! Her newest release, The Marriage Season has such colorful characters and sweet romance that you'll be flipping  that pages straight through until the happily ever after. We wanted to know what inspires her and makes her tick:

Tell us a little bit about your new release, The Marriage Season.

THE MARRIAGE SEASON is the third story in my Brides of Bliss County series, this time featuring Becca "Bex" Stuart and her hunky hero, Tate. Bex has entered into a marriage pact--a sort of experiment in the power of intention--with her best friends, Hadleigh and Melody. The objective? For each of them to meet and marry just the right man. Her friends have succeeded, big-time. Bex, however, has her doubts she'll be able to hold up her third of the bargain.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

What a wonderful question! I love to read on a rainy day, play with my art supplies, or cuddle with my pets--Bernice, the 15 year old Yorkie princess, and Jitterbug, my kitty cat.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Another great question! I think I'd have to choose Hogwarts and other Harry Potteresque points of interest.

Do you listen to anything while you write? If so, what's your audio of choice?

I listen to music--usually country--while I'm composing the story. When I'm revising or editing, I need complete silence.

What’s the last book you read?

"Visualization for Weight Loss" by Jon Gabriel. Currently, I'm listening to "Gettysburg,” by Stephen Sears.

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

Tuscany. I would live in a farmhouse with frescoes on the wall and dine under the olive trees in the garden.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

First: Annie Oakley. Second: an astronaut. Since the first was already taken, and the second required too much math, I went for the third: Writer. 🙂

What's your favorite scene from your book?

I love the fishing scene in THE MARRIAGE SEASON, and also the game of Old Maid.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Either reading or doing art work.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Yes. "Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway." John Wayne

5 Quotes to Make You Stop Judging Me for Liking British Chick Lit

Romance is a polarizing genre. There are two camps: those who love to read romance books and those who judge people for loving to read romance books. Since I am a complicated and dichotomous human (insert teenage angsty "no one understands me" gif), I am both at once. Read Sartre to get the brain churning; read Kinsella for the feels.

Judging me? Here are 5 insightful / relatable / funny quotes to change your mind.

kinsella-quote-1

The plight of the planner: unnecessary stress over where you're going in life and how you'll get there. There's a difference between having goals and drive and stressing over the future. The above quote from The Undomestic Goddess reminds me to breathe and be present.

kinsella-quote-2

Also from The Undomestic Goddess. Also a helpful reminder for the fellow high-strung planners.

kinsella-quote-3

A long one, yes - but a funny commentary on how one should never enter into a committed relationship feeling anything but empowered. If you have to change the details of your personality, it's not right. Of course we all know that, but of course it's so easy to forget when that funny little bugger called attraction enters the equation. The above quote is from I've Got Your Number.

kinsella-quote-4

Always spread happiness. It's the best kind of contagious. From Twenties Girl.

kinsella-quote-5

The above quote is from Can You Keep a Secret. Relatable and delightfully snappy. Anybody else have a paranoid family member? I have multiple. Upon learning that I like to run, my own grandfather gave me a suspicious look and said, "you don't run ALONE, in the DARK, do you?" Ahem, of course not, Grandpa, of course not....

If you haven't heard, Sophie Kinsella has a new book called Finding Audrey. It's a departure into the YA genre for her, which is interesting to me because I started reading her books at fourteen. I remember a friend shaking her curls away from her face, reaching into her North Face backpack, and handing me a copy of Can You Keep a Secret with a definitive "Taylor, YOU WILL LOVE THIS." And I did. And I still have that battered copy, 11 years later.

I'm excited to see what Kinsella does with her first true Young Adult novel.

Interview with Paula Morris, author of The Eternal City

As someone with a soft spot for old cities, I knew we needed to get in touch with Paula Morris, author of YA adventure novels set in some of the oldest towns in the world. Her most recent release is The Eternal City (Point: May 2015).

Tell us a little bit about your new release, The Eternal City.

The Eternal City is my fourth YA novel, and like the others it's a mystery with a supernatural twist set in a very old city. The others were set in New Orleans and York, so this setting - Rome - is the oldest of all. I like writing adventure stories about regular teens, ie ones without any 'special' powers aside from brains and imagination, engaging with the rich and often dark seams of history in a place. This book is a bit different from my other YA novels, in that there are ancient gods creating chaos rather than ghosts.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was a child I had almost no idea of what jobs existed in the world. I was more interested in attending or setting up a boarding school, because I was obsessed with the 'Chalet School' books by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer. I liked reading and writing above all other things.

Which book from your childhood or teenage years has stuck with you as an adult?

I first read Jane Austen's novels as a teen, probably when I was fifteen, and they are still favorites. And I'm still very fond of many of the authors I read as a child and adolescent, like Edward Eager, Lorna Hill, Eleanor Estes, and E. C. Spykman. My absolute favorite childhood books, the 'Five Dolls in a House' series by Helen Clare, still make me laugh.

Where is your happy place?

Yesterday I read an article about five instant ways to feel happy (here is the link). I agree with all of them:
Listening to a favorite piece of music
Spending five more minutes with someone you like
Going outdoors
Helping someone else
Having a new experience
I did four of the five yesterday, and I did feel happy.

What's your favorite scene from your book?

My favourite scene from The Eternal City is the big set-piece towards the end when the band of young people have to fight their way through the streets of Rome. Set pieces are hard to write in some ways, but very rewarding when they finally come together.

What's the last song that was stuck in your head?

The song stuck in my head yesterday was by New Order. I think it was 'True Faith.' I was singing it in the street.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Auckland?

There are way too many good restaurants in Auckland, but my current favorite is Sri Pinang, a Malaysian place on K Road. You can get every possible cuisine here, from Mongolian BBQ to Maori hangi to Afghani naan to kosher deli ... too much choice!

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

France, if you'll let me choose a whole country!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I'm not much of a one for wise words. Silly words are more my thing. Like Groucho Marx as Hugo Z. Hackenbush in "A Day at the Races" dancing around and singing "I knew it all along."

Giveaway & Interview with Nancy Naigle, author of Life After Perfect

NewInBooks fun fact: we're suckers for books set in our home state of North Carolina. Life After Perfect is a love story set in a fictional town called Boot Creek. If you like stories about starting over and leaving behind a different life, you're in luck. We're giving away a SIGNED copy of Life After Perfect. Want to win? Retweet the below tweet. We'll pick a winner next week.

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Life After Perfect.

Life After Perfect just came out on May 19th. I’m so tickled with readers response to the new book. This book is a departure from my Adams Grove series, although it is tied to another small town. There’s not a thread of suspense in this story either, but I love Katy and Derek. They are two people who’ve got some serious stuff to deal with, but when their paths unexpectedly cross. . . good things happen. It’s a story of second chances, hope, and being brave enough to try again.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it??

A whole hour. Wow…I’d spend it outside daydreaming. There’s never enough time to just let everything go and do nothing. That’s definitely how I’d spend it.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My mother was always writing. She’s an amazing poet and even had a couple songs recorded along the way. So, creativity was just part of how I grew up. It wasn’t until I was going through some rough patches in my own life that I realized what a gift it was for an author to be able to sweep me away for a little while. Jayne Ann Krentz novels got me through some very dark times. Her novels kept my life in balance when everything was in chaos. They left me with hope, and renewed strength. I want to be that for someone else. To re-gift the power that I got from those books to someone else.

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

Now that one is hard. I have a bucket list of places I still want to go! I’m headed to Alaska this summer. While I’m on that coast I’ll visit Seattle for the first time, too. Alright, so if I had to pick ONE place to vacation for the rest of my life it better be somewhere that’s a sure thing. Mackinac Island, MI at Grand Hotel.

What's on your writing desk?

Too much!

  • A desk lamp. I need good light.
  • My Mac and an array of USB/power cords for all my electronic gadgets.
  • At-A-Glance 2015 Weekly Planner – yes the paper kind!
  • A stack of “to be filed” stuff. Bills to pay and things to take action on.
  • A crystal goblet full of red marbles on the back left. That’s the spot for wealth and prosperity.
  • Two cups of ink pens and markers
  • A coaster.

Great. Now I need to stop and clean up my desk.

What are you currently craving?

Same thing I always crave – Krispy Kreme Chocolate Iced Kreme Filled Doughnuts.

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

Nancy Drew. Smart, savvy and nothing ever got past her.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

In my jammies being lazy.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Clean living pays off.
