Interview with Megan Crane, author of Devil's Honor

What can you tell us about your new release, Devil's Honor?

Devil’s Honor is the high-octane start to my brand new biker romance series, The Devil’s Keepers. Merritt Broussard grew up and knew she had to get out of her Louisiana hometown, ruled as it is by the club. And that’s exactly what she did, except for that one summer between college and law school when she accidentally lost her heart—and very nearly her head—with Greeley, one of the Devil’s Keepers’ fiercest brothers. She’s stayed away for five years, but now she’s back, on the run from some trouble in her fancy new life as a lawyer, and determined not to let the sultry bayou town suck her back in. But Greeley never quite got over her—and he has other ideas.

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

I love nothing more than big, fun dinners with writers. That’s one of the reasons I love going to writing conferences. And I’d probably opt for a dinner with some of my writing friends if I was planning a dinner party. But if I could invite writers I didn’t know? I’d probably go for JK Rowling, Neil Gaiman, and (assuming there could be ghostly visitations) Anne McCaffrey. How fun would THAT be?

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

It’s a toss-up between Harry Potter and Pern (complete with fire lizards and dragons). That said, I’ve never seen a wardrobe in my life without checking the back to see if it’s a portal to Narnia…

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Calm down, destroy those angsty journals, and try to have a better sense of humor about the whole thing because it passes. Thank goodness, it passes.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

I would prefer to spend it tucked up somewhere cozy, reading a book. But these days I usually have to work, so I spend it tucked up, writing a book. That’s almost as much fun!

What's rocking your world this month?

I binge-watched Goliath on Netflix (or was it Amazon Prime? I can’t remember) and really dug it. Also Luke Cage.

What scene in Devil's Honor was your favorite to write?

I loved all of Merritt and Greeley’s scenes together. They were so in love and yet angry at each other and yet yearning… It was really fun to write!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

My wedding ring is engraved with the words “no other shoe,” to encourage me to stop believing there’s always another shoe out there about to drop. So far that’s a work in progress.

New Book Releases Week of November 1

The Best Scary Books and Movies for your Halloween Weekend

Halloween is upon us and it's time to venture into some of our favorite terrifying tales on the page and on the screen. Our list contains some of the classics of horror writing like Stephen King and Thomas Harris combined with some of the masters of scary cinematics like Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick.

The Best Scary Books and Movies for your Halloween Weekend

The Shining

Stephen King

We couldn’t talk about scary books and their movie adaptations without mentioning The Shining. Arguably one of the most successful transitions from book to screen, Stephen King’s book was adapted by Stanley Kubrick and starred Jack Nicholson as the main protagonist, Jack Torrance.

For those who haven’t experienced The Shining, it tells the tale of a young family that move to an isolated hotel in the winter off season. Their young son discovers he has psychic powers and struggles to hold his own against the forces of evil that are driving his father insane.

The Silence of the Lambs

Thomas Harris

Another classic movie and book combination is The Silence of the Lambs. The Thomas Harris psychological thriller tells the story of Clarice Starling, a young trainee at the FBI Academy, who is tasked with interviewing a Dr. Hannibal Lecter - Hannibal the Cannibal - who is kept under close watch in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

The movie stars Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster and is still considered one of the most shocking thriller films ever.

Psycho

Robert Bloch

The novel Psycho was published in 1959 and was inspired by the real-life story of Ed Gein, a psychotic murderer who lead a dual life.

Alfred Hitchcock was so captivated by the book that he turned it into one of the most-loved classic films of all time. It has since had more recent adaptations, including another movie and a spin-off TV series, Bates Motel.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Seth Grahame-Smith & Jane Austen

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a bold reimagining of the beloved Jane Austen classic romance.

This New York Times Best Seller was recently made into a major motion picture and is definitely a scary ride for both fans of Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith’s updated tale.

Gone Girl

Gillian Flynn

Gone Girl, the New York Times Best Selling novel by Gillian Flynn is a tale that will definitely send chills down your spine this Halloween.

The story of Nick Dunne and the sudden disappearance of his wife Amy was also made into a blockbuster movie in 2014, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Both the movie and the book are a guaranteed to give you a sleepless night this Halloween if you dare.

I Am Legend

Richard Matheson

I Am Legend is a science fiction book that has also received the film adaptation treatment. But this one is actually a little different from the original. Both are scary stories that feature a main protagonist named Robert Neville, who is the last man on earth.

While in Richard Matheson’s original, the world was filled with vampires, the Hollywood remake starring Will Smith actually changed this to zombies. Either one will still give you a fright, just in very different ways.

Interview with Sidney Halston, author of Pull Me Close

What can you tell us about your new release, Pull Me Close?
It’s about Katherine who is struggling with anxiety and hasn’t left her home in a long time. She thinks she’ll be okay to attend her sister’s engagement party but fails, passing out in the middle of the club. Enter, Nico, the owner of Panic Club. He thinks she’s just another woman who is OD’ing at his club and has zero empathy towards her. I think what makes the story interesting and different is the events that led her to become so scared of everything and also there is a smallish twist toward the end that makes this story very current (I’m trying not to give too much away). But, like my other books, PULL ME CLOSE is still very sexy. And, unlike my other books, it is heavier and will definitely leave you with the feels.

You can read a little more about my inspiration for Katherine over on Red Feather Romance.

What’s the last book you read?
Playboy Pilot by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland

What's on your writing desk?
Ha! I don’t have a desk. I write on my comfy chair with the laptop on my lap or I go to Starbucks. But on my ‘metaphorical” desk there’s always coffee.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?
My house. I know, I know. BORING. But being at home is the most relaxing place for me to be.. I guess it’s the familiarity and comfort of being home and having my husband and kids close by, even if they are the opposite of conducive to keeping a writing schedule.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?
Reading!

What scene in Pull Me Close was your favorite to write?
I really loved writing the scene where they were on a date at her house. They didn’t leave but the dancing, the song, the words he said to her--- I thought it was so sweet and sensual all at once.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
JUST DO IT. When people say—Oh, I want to do XYZ, I always say—Okay, so, just do it. If you really want to do something, there aren’t many obstacles you can’t overcome. The thing is, most of us find it hard to start that “thing” we want to do. Or we get stuck in our head with worry and excuses or fear of failure. Every Monday morning I tell myself I’m going to start dieting. And I do. Unfortunately, I fail by Monday afternoon. (But one day, I’ll succeed)
