Interview with Sosie Frost, author of Babyjacked

What can you tell us about your new release, Babyjacked?

Babyjacked is the first book in my brand new romantic comedy series. I’m super excited about this one—I’ve never been able to really hunker down and write about one family before. The Payne brothers are…well, they’re what you expected from a bunch of hunky, alpha, cocky men all forced back into their childhood home. They’re in a bit of trouble, as is their family’s farm. With the men at each other’s throats, it’s up to the sweet, sassy, and stubborn women of their small town to wrangle these feuding brothers. Healing one broken relationship one romantic comedy at a time.

Each book should be so much fun. I can’t wait to share them!

What's the last book you read?

The Rebound by Winter Renshaw! I love everything she writes, and that book is every bit as heart-wrenching and lovely as her others.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Scarlett O’Hara and her attitude, lol! I absolutely love Scarlett. Though she tends to be selfish and cut-throat, she wasn’t always completely obsessed with the men she loved—Ashley and Rhett. Her first love was her farm, Tara. She did whatever she could to protect her land/farm/family, but she just couldn’t protect her heart. And the book is even better than the movie!

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always wanted to write. Just something I’ve been doing since I was a kid. After college, I did do other jobs—even became the finance manager for a local township. But even that was good for the writing—in my next book, Boyfrienemy, I’m going to be peppering in all the craziness and insanity I experienced while in local government. It’ll be fantastic.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Stopping time. I need more hours in my day to write! I also need the power of caffeine so I can stay energized to take advantage of all that time.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

Writing. There is nothing better than rain or snow on a writing day. I always feel guilty staying inside when it’s bright, sunny, and warm. If the rest of the world is dreary, I can hide-away, guilt-free. Fun fact: Should the day turn stormy, all bets are off. One of my top three fears—Tornados.

What scene in Babyjacked was your favorite to write?

I giggled all the way through the scene when Cassi got her booty stuck in the tire swing. Just seemed like something I would do in real-life.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

When a book is finished, I get sushi. Not necessarily a motto or quote, but it’s definitely good inspiration.

Interview with Marilyn J. Evans, author of Beloved Lives

What can you tell us about your new release, Beloved Lives?

Beloved Lives is my reinvention of The Mummy as it was done by Universal studios in the 1930's. I always loved those old horror films when I was a kid. When I saw The Hunger with Catherine Deneuve, Susan Saradon, and David Bowie in the 1980's, I thought it was a brilliant reinvention of the vampire legend. I wanted someone to do the same for The Mummy. While I liked the reboots I've seen, I don't think they captured the longing and tragedy of a love affair that has lasted centuries and the difficulty of someone trying to break with the past. That is what I was hoping to show in April's struggle to let go of her past lives, and in her trying to decide between a new love, Mitch, and her old love, Dr. Weston. There is a cat, of course, because my cats insisted.

If Beloved Lives is turned into a movie, who would you pick to play April?

Wow, that's a tough one. She has to be short and very slender, but a bit athletic. Danielle Campbell at 5'3" is about the right height, and I think she looks pretty right for the role. I love Selena Gomez, but she's a little tall.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've always scribbled, and I've done a lot of technical writing, but I didn't get serious about fiction until a few years ago. I've taken some great classes and attended some conferences that convinced me I might really be able to do this. And I read voraciously. Oddly, if you read a bad book, you often think, heck, I could do better than that.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

In his wonderful book On Writing, Stephen King said he liked everything about the process. So far, I have too. I love coming up with the ideas, putting it into the computer (and sometimes on paper, yes, still), bouncing it off friends, rewriting. I was surprised to discover I really like the rewrites requested by the editor. It's like solving a puzzle. How do I fix this without having to completely rewrite the whole thing? How do I make it consistent, logical, or whatever? I'm kind of new to the whole book promotion game, so I can't tell yet if I'll like that or not. But if I had to pick one thing, it might be when I'm stuck, and I walk around the park near my house and work out what to write next.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

I can eat anything I want and not get fat. Actually, when I was a kid, I swore no one I knew would go hungry or be without a place to sleep If I could help it. I'd like to be like the Celtic god, Dagda, and have a magic cauldron that feeds anyone who is hungry. Being able to keep everyone from cold and hunger would be a great superpower.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

That's funny because I retired from the pharmaceutical and biologics industries last year (I was a regulatory auditor), so I have lots of extra hours these days. I spend my time riding horses, gardening, sewing and knitting, reading, cooking, and writing, of course. My best friend, one of the inspirations for Trish in Beloved Lives, has been retired for a while, and she is busier than she's ever been in her life. I understand now how that happens. I think I would like to spend more time at the zoo and at museums, plays, and concerts. I'll work on that.

What scene in Beloved Lives was your favorite to write?

Choosing my favorite child? I like some of the past life scenes, especially when April's former self first meets the hermit. And the climax was pretty fun to write. Some scenes were harder to write than others. But the scenes with cats, well, I had expert help.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

My favorite quote is from E. B. White: In matters concerning love and high explosives, one can never be certain of all the factors.

But my personal philosophy is, if you reject the idea that there is such a thing as evil and instead realize there is only illness, misunderstanding, and crossed purposes, you begin to understand that every bad thing can and should be cured, explained, solved.

Interview with Morgan G Farris, author of The Promised One

What can you tell us about your new release, The Promised One?

The Promised One is a little bit different than your typical fantasy færytale, namely because it's a story that begins after the characters have already fallen in love. So it's not a "will they or won't they" story, but rather it's a journey to rediscover one another after magic comes between an already unlikely love. I wrote it that way on purpose—because I wanted a story of what happens after that first kiss. We tend to glamorize it like everything in love is downhill afterward, and for me I wanted to read a story of a couple that perseveres beyond that initial phase of falling in love.

What’s the last book you read?

The last book I read was Uprooted by Naomi Novik. It is such a beautiful fantasy, centered around a girl who learns that everything she thought she knew about the world was wrong. I love Novik's style—it's quick-witted without being too modern. It feels like you're reading a classic fairy tale.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

I am a forever fan of Sarah J. Maas. Her style is brilliant and effortless and the way she weaves intricate details throughout all her books is fascinating. Her Throne of Glass series is such a testament to her growth as an author. (In case you can't tell, I'm a lover of all things fantasy.)

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love creating worlds and then getting lost in them. I love getting lost inside my characters' minds. I love looking at the world through their eyes. For me, it's a cathartic experience to put myself in someone else's shoes and walk a mile with them. I love how my characters continually surprise me. I love when I think I know what they would do, and then they do the opposite. They begin to feel like real people from the past, or from a dream, and it's a beautiful journey you take with them.

What is a typical day like for you?

I like to say I'm a marketing director by day and a creative by night. I work a day job where I get to flex my creative muscles in a tangible way, but it's the night where my mind has always come alive with ideas, with words, with scenes and worlds. I do most of my writing at night. Even if I'm not at a keyboard, I'm usually writing a scene in my mind that I'll later put in words. If it weren't for the fact that I need sleep, I don't think I would for all the creativity that blossoms when the sun goes down.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

My parents always encouraged me to be true to myself. They fostered in me a sense of pride in my own brand of weirdness that has carried through my whole life. I've never been one to worry about what everyone else is doing, or what's trendy—I've always just pursued what I wanted. I think that has played out in my writing as well. I did not write The Promised One for any particular audience, or because I thought it was a market trend, I wrote it because I wanted to read it. And the feedback I've gotten so far has shown me that staying true to yourself is one of the best ways to create authentic art that speaks to others as well.

What scene in The Promised One was your favorite to write?

This is a difficult question to answer! I have a lot, but I think one of my favorite scenes is (spoiler alert) when Prince Ferryl barges in to his brother Derwin's chambers to find his best friend, Leala, in there, wearing his brother's shirt. He almost loses his mind thinking that his brother is catting around with their childhood friend, only to realize that his brother secretly married her. I love the scene because I think it shows a true glimpse of Ferryl's heart. He's fiercely loyal, he's protective of those he loves (even to a fault), and he's also a traditionalist when it comes to love. He holds it sacred, so in that moment, all he can think of is protecting Leala's virtue. Oh Ferryl. He's such a sweet guy, he even makes me sick sometimes. It was fun to write the beats of that scene from Ferryl's perspective—from shock, to rage, to a frozen moment as understanding dawns.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

One of my all-time favorite quotes is from Charles Spurgeon—I learned to kiss the waves that slammed me into the Rock of Ages. I think there is a beauty in embracing the ups and downs of life, and recognizing that at their root, they are a tool to point us to something much greater than ourselves. I think at its heart, that is the primary theme of The Promised One.

The Story Behind Ruthless by Kira Blakely

By Kira Blakely

Everything about my new book is ruthless.

Eli, who’s a vigilante and ruthless in pursuit of his goal: to bring down the step-father who kicked him out on the streets and took his mother from him.

Nina, who’s ruthless in pursuit of love and in her belief that her father, that very same man, can’t be as bad as what Eli’s telling her.

She’s his estranged step-sister.

He’s her kryptonite.

A man with the devil’s cock matched with a woman whose sweet as a saint.

Together, they form one hell of a spicy team, if they can get over their mistrust of each other.

I decided on Ruthless as a project because I really wanted to explore a hero who had a darker background, and with that, a darker villain. I wanted to see what the characters would do – whether they’d be torn apart by their differing opinions or brought together by their love.

The one scene I truly enjoyed writing was kinda early on in the book. It was steamy, just after Eli had revealed a bit of important information, and it’s where Nina coined the phrase ‘devil’s cock.’ She just can’t resist him and he can’t resist her and it’s totally screwing up their plans!

Nothing gets me more excited than taking two opposite characters and throwing them together in a pressure cooker situation. Hopefully, that’s exactly what I’ve achieved with Ruthless.

Obviously, I’m not going to tell you what happens, you’ll have to find out for yourself! And I hope you love it.
