The Story Behind Still Not Yours by Nicole Snow

By Nicole Snow

Total freaking opposites.

There are so many fun possibilities when that phrase comes up in romance. It's an old trope and it's evergreen for a reason. Of course, since this is a Nicole Snow book, I just had to put it through my own patented swoon spinner to come up with a unique tale of friction, loss, and love against the odds. That's how I came up with Riker Woods and Olivia Holly, the hero and heroine of my latest book, Still Not Yours.

He's insanely hot. Damaged. Older. A tragic beast who's more than a little rough around the edges with an oh-so-irresistible heart of gold underneath. That comes in handy as a single dad raising a brilliant little girl. Especially when a feisty young woman comes into his life and threatens to upend the orderly, predictable family world he always thought he knew. What else can a man who's made the protector archetype his career do? Orders are orders when his boss says they've got a gig.

Enter Olivia. Liv. If she hadn't just seen a man gunned down in front of her, she might be young and feisty and ready to take her long-delayed piece of the world. It hasn't been easy for her after a life under her wealthy father's thumb and her world-famous popstar sister's long shadow.

She's ill-equipped for a man like Riker. Damn if she isn't smitten, though. And who wouldn't be when they're up close and personal? It's Riker's job to protect his latest client. What better way than moving her in with a fake engagement for cover? Then things get shockingly complicated.

You get what I'm going for here. Riker and Liv are a tough job for Cupid. Good thing that sneaky little punk always finds a way. It's a whole lot of drama, laughs, tears, thrills, and soul-searching before these two find their Happily Ever After.

In the end, when I was done with this book, I realized I'd uncovered something important. It takes a huge, ginormous heart to be honest with yourself. And honesty might just be the surest path to love.

Interview with Kilby Blades, author of Worst Holiday Ever

What can you tell us about your new release, Worst Holiday Ever?

Worst Holiday Ever is a collection of stories about surviving holiday homecomings with colorful families. Each story is a romance, so, apart from the standard family holiday drama, there’s the added tension of bringing a new partner home. The stories all end sweetly—some with marriage proposals or pregnancy announcements, but mostly they’re really funny. A lot of people will be able to see their own families in the characters: the brother-in-law who drinks too much, the religious zealot who proselytizes, the sharp-tongued grandma who says whatever she wants… This book is the first in a loosely-connected series of holiday-themed romance anthologies that serves up happily ever afters after exploring everything that’s hard about the holidays. Worst Valentine’s Day Ever is the next book in the series. It comes out in February.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I make a distinction between a writer and an author. A lot of people are compelled to write. Authors are those who put their work out into the world. That part of it has always come easily to me. I’m someone who has always written and will always write, and I’ve never been intimidated to share my work. It started out as fan fiction (what I was inspired to write when I felt that screen writers of shows I liked got things wrong) and morphed into original fiction after I ran out of fandoms I was passionate about. I published my debut novel, Snapdragon, as soon as it was finished because I loved it and because I thought it was ready. I didn’t try to have it traditionally published nor did I feel that I needed the validation of the industry. It debuted to fantastic results. It’s been a finalist or winner of more than ten prestigious awards and has outsold the average indie title by a healthy margin.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is my all-time favorite. I think I read it when I was about twelve and I’ve read it many times since. Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson was my portal into futuristic post-apocalyptic dystopia after a long love affair with classics like 1984 and Fahrenheit 451. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is another one (do you see a theme?) and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is the lighthearted outlier and The Mindf*ck Series by S.T. Abby is a modern dark romance indie title that I absolutely love. Even though I write romance, I tend to read the much angstier stuff.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I don’t think I would ever host a literary talk show. Really good authors tend to tie things up in a way that tells you everything you need to know. In stories like The Road by Cormack McCarthy, every question isn’t answered, but that’s deliberate, and part of the appeal. As a reader, I find that I only have questions after reading a book with loose ends. As a writer, however, I’m always conscious that there’s more to my characters than comes through in my books (usually because I’m being careful of word count). I’d love for someone to ask me more about the characters in my books and details that didn’t make it onto the page. And, yes, I see the irony in those differing perspectives.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Falling in love with my characters and my stories. If you’re an author and you don’t go back to everything you’ve written and find more to love about it each time, you’re doing it wrong. Not every story will be commercially or critically successful and it’s hard to be happy as an author if most of your pleasure doesn’t come from the books themselves.

What is a typical day like for you?

There is no typical. I’ve got small kids and I work part-time as a consultant to busy executives. What that means is that my schedule is at the mercy of others. It’s taught me how to write wherever, whenever, or however I can. It’s common for me to be in my car dictating chapters, or listening to one of my works-in-progress while on a walk or a run as part of my developmental editing process.

What scene in Worst Holiday Ever was your favorite to write?

Umm…all of them? It’s a collection of short stories, so with only 9,000 to 12,000 words to tell a complete story, every scene is fast-paced and full of holiday high jinks. My story, Crazy Old Money has the drama of a telenovela on every single page.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Probably some combination of “talk is cheap” and “if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” I’m a woman of action in all aspects of my life and am, literally, an activist for social justice. I don’t think I have the right to kvetch about anything I dislike if I’m not also doing something about it.

Interview with Helena Halme, author of The Christmas Heart

What can you tell us about your new release, The Christmas Heart?

The Christmas Heart is a seasonal tale of a holiday romance set in the snow-capped Swedish Alps. I absolutely adored writing this story where Kaisa finds love again in her middle years. The idea began developing in my head after a late-night discussion in Helsinki with my best friend about our university days. The subject of old flames cropped up and we might have Googled a number of people ...

That night in bed I sketched an outline for The Christmas Heart. It took a New Year's break to Åre in Sweden to find the right snowy setting for the story, and after this discovery, I was deep into the tale of a woman in her fifties finding love with an old flame from university. When my friend read the finished manuscript she exclaimed, 'That could so easily have been me!' It was at that point that I knew I'd written the kind of book I set out to write.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Around the time when I met my English Navy Officer husband at the British Embassy in Helsinki, I began reading fiction in English and discovered Doris Lessing’s books. I became besotted with her writing and went on from there to dream of a writing career for myself. It took some 20 years and an MA in Creative Writing before I finally began taking my ambition seriously.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

What a difficult question! I could think of a hundred, but to whittle them down to five ... OK, here goes:

The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing
Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively
Restless by William Boyd
The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I’d like to invite William Boyd to talk about his latest book, Love Is Blind. I’d ask him how he manages to make his characters, with all their faults and weaknesses, so real and adorable.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I enjoy being able to take myself into another person's head and live their lives through them. It’s a completely immersive experience and takes you away from your own problems and the dreadful things that are taking place in the world. Writing is a kind of escapism for me.

What is a typical day like for you?

I wake up early, around six am and write for two or three hours, after which I go to the gym, or do some stretching and Pilates at home. In the afternoon, if I don’t have a meeting with one of the authors I mentor, I reply to my emails, write newsletters to my mailing list, or blog, and generally spend some time on social media. Evenings are either devoted to my writing or to my Englishman.

What scene in The Christmas Heart was your favorite to write?

I absolutely loved writing the scene where Kaisa and Tom sneak away for a romantic lunch at a mountaintop restaurant. They eat well and drink champagne and admire the winter wonderland around them. I’ve been to the place, Hummelstugan, myself, and know how unbelievably beautiful the views towards the frozen Lake Are are!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

“Whatever you're meant to do, do it now. The conditions are always impossible.” ― Doris Lessing

Interview with Chris Orcutt, author of A Study in Crimson

What can you tell us about your new release, A Study in Crimson?

As a boy who revered Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I loved A Study in Scarlet in which Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson meet for the first time. I wanted to write the "origin story" of Dakota Stevens and Svetlana Krüsh, paying homage to Doyle's meeting of Holmes and Watson. A Study in Crimson is a prequel in the series because it takes place soon after Dakota has left the FBI, and he's struggling to form his own PI agency. He's extremely devil-may-care, and readers get to see the witty swagger for which he becomes known in the later books.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I taught myself to read at age three, so I've always loved words and stories. As a young boy, Jack London's stories stirred my imagination, but it wasn't until I was 13 and reading Ian Fleming's Goldfinger that it occurred to me that actual people wrote these books. One passage in particular in Goldfinger—where Bond is driving through the Alps in springtime—aroused my literary sensibilities. His description of the alpine countryside was so beautiful that I knew this was what I wanted to do with my life—write novels.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

1. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

2. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

3. A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway

4. The Odyssey by Homer

5. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

If my guests could only be living writers, my first guest would be Charles Frazier, author of Cold Mountain. I'd want to ask him this: "Given that Cold Mountain took you a decade to write, did you ever doubt its greatness? If so, why; and if not, why not?"

If I could have any writer (living or dead), my first guest would be Anton Chekhov. I'd want to ask him two questions: "Is 'The Lady with the Dog' at all autobiographical?" And, "Regarding your first play—The Clean-Shaven Secretary with the Pistol—what was the plot?"

What's your favorite thing about writing?

While I imagine most writers will say it's the creating of a new character or scene, for me it's revision. The first draft work on any novel is always the hardest. But for me, revising that first draft over and over and over again is a pleasure: honing a paragraph, finding le mot juste, crafting a gorgeous turn of phrase.

What is a typical day like for you?

Novel-writing over the long term requires routine and consistency. I wake early (often before 5:00 am), write for a couple of hours on one of my typewriters, get ready to go to work, and then write at the Vassar College library or in my home office. I write for 5-6 hours, having lunch at some point, then go to the gym and work out, or, in winter, cross-country ski. I then do errands, go home, cook dinner, watch a program, read in bed, go to sleep, repeat. The books get written by producing a minimum word count every day (for me this is 1000-1500) and by not letting myself get bogged down in editing the story while I'm writing it.

What scene in A Study in Crimson was your favorite to write?

There are two that I particularly enjoyed. The first is when Dakota is flirting with a group of sorority girls. The second is when Dakota is in the woods around Walden Pond, and he steals a guy's mountain bike. Every time I re-read that mountain bike scene or share it with my wife, I crack myself up.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I live by a quote by Gandhi, who said, "We must all become the change we wish to see in the world." As far as writing goes, my creed is one by Ernest Hemingway: "It is your object to convey everything to the reader so that he remembers it not as a story he had read, but as something that happened to himself. That is the true test of writing." This idea of Hemingway's is my guiding principle with everything I write.
