Interview with Casey Diam, Author of Can You Hear It

What can you tell us about your new release, Can You Hear It?

Can You Hear It is book one in my new series, Alpen Springs, and is a standalone. The story takes place in this small mountain city that I am so in love with, and not only that, I adore the main characters, Ashton and Averie as well as all the secondary characters. Their story is so emotionally, yet so sweet at the same time, that I basically just want to stay in their world, and Alpen Springs for so much longer.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

After reading Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes, Breakable by Tamara Webber, and It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover in a two-week time frame, I found my passion for reading and getting lost in a story again. That was when I had an ‘aha moment’ as I thought about all of the unfinished works I’d written over the years. That same week, I decided to finish writing Keeping Her Close, the first novel I wrote to its completion. So essentially, I’ve always enjoyed writing for myself as a way to escape, but it wasn’t until I read those books that I began to really think about becoming an author.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, Breakable by Tamara Webber, It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover, The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare, The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Nora Roberts. What is your writing process?

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The escape out of myself and into a world where the characters are in total control. Since I’m not much of a plotter, I feel like I’m experiencing the journey with the characters from a readers standpoint even as I write. Eighty percent of the time, I have no idea what the characters are going to throw at me next, and it’s so exciting, I love it!

What is a typical day like for you?

I wake up at 5:45 a.m. and lie in bed for an hour because for some reason I can’t stop waking up that early, which is crazy because I’m not a morning person. So, still tired and sleepy, I just lie in bed and scroll through social media on my phone. After that, I go to work and after 8 hours of data entry and possibly locking eyes with the handsome fellow a few cubicles over, I’m back home. Then depending on how tired I am, I try to get some writing done, but usually, I’m exhausted to the point I’m in bed with my laptop by 8:00 p.m. until I call it a night around 10:30.

What scene in Can You Hear It was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write in Can You Hear It was when Ashton ran into Averie at a house party. That was their first real interaction with each other since it lasted more than a minute, so it was fun to see and experience their chemistry as it leaped off the pages.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

To focus on the here and now and to take things one day at a time.

Interview with Anicia S Eriksson, Author of Not Your Shame

What can you tell us about your new release, Not Your Shame?

Not Your Shame is originally a Swedish title, and for the past few months I have worked day and night with translating the Swedish book into English. And here we are! I have an amazing publisher who's been there for me all the way and has helped me with the release of Not Your Shame. The book is a self biography in poetry and prose about growing up with an alcoholic father, that same father who then gets cancer and dies when I'm at an age of 15. It is about the traumatic event of when I was raped at 18, and about the aftermaths of that. It is about the struggles of being a woman, but it is also about finding love, hope and finding a will to live after decades of darkness. It is a book that will show you that it is possible to crawl out of that dark, bottomless hole. It is possible to find a way to want to live.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I can't say it was just one person or one thing that inspired me, for there is many. But there is one person who definitely has been a huge inspiration of mine, and that is my cousin Elina Sundström. She's an author and has been published with three books thus far, and she sowed the idea in my mind that maybe, just maybe I could be an author too. In writing poetry, I have found some inspiration in Rupi Kaur. But there was never just one inspiration, I've had too many to count.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I've read many books in my days, and I am really very terrible at remembering the titles of the books I've read. Even my favorites. I did, however, read a book recently that I could not put down, it is called "Notes to self" by Emelie pine. It made me both laugh and shed a tear or two. Another book I really recommend is "The sunshine sisters" by Jane Green. Loved it.

I also have to recommend a book that I haven't finished reading yet, but already love - that is "Avien" by Maria Wälsäter - this book is in Swedish though, but hopefully it will be available in English any time soon. "Somebody I used to know" by Wendy Mitchell is another book I recommend, and last but not least - "The perks of being a wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

That would be a dream. Wow, there is so many people I'd want to invite, but I think my first guest would be Rupi Kaur. I would want to ask her how she found the courage to begin with, publishing her poetry on her own. I would also like to ask her the upsides och downsides having gotten so much publicity as she has gotten, and also how being an author has affected her. There are so many questions I'd like to ask her.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is the way it makes me feel. Or rather, not feel. Writing offers a relief like nothing else, it makes me feel less anxious, less restless, less stressed. I love how it also makes me feel genuinely happy and satisfied, nothing can compare to the rush I'm feeling while having a flow in my writing, I can spend HOURS just writing with no pause. It is intense and it is absolutely amazing, and after a session like that, I always feel light. Like I'm sailing on clouds, like there is no weight on my shoulders. I love how I'm able to form my somewhat chaotic thoughts into words right in front of me. Writing offers me relief, and that is my favorite thing about it.

What is a typical day like for you?

Besides being an author, I also work as a preschool teacher. So a typical day for me starts at my job, and then when I get home at the end of the day I spend some quality time with my partner and our cat. And of course, I write. I try to write a little (or a lot...) every day. Somedays I'm too tired to even open the computer, but most days I do get some writing done.

What scene in Not Your Shame was your favorite to write?

I can't say any of the parts was my favorite to write, because it honestly was so painful to write this book. However, the most important part for me to write was the first part of the book - that is the part about the rape. It was life-saving for me to write that part, and it made me realize and learn some very important things about myself that I would not have learned had I not written this book. Writing is a way of making things make sense to me. So I can't say I really enjoyed writing any of the parts in this book, but what I can say is that it was important and offered me support and relief when I was at my worst. And I'm so grateful for that, I'm so grateful to myself for writing this book.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

That it is okay to not be okay. That it really can get better, with the right help and support. The shame is not ours, and neither is the guilt. They are not ours to carry.

Interview with L.E. Thomas, Author of Invasion

What can you tell us about your new release, Invasion?

The novel tells the story of a young man reacting to a planetary assault and coping with the subsequent occupation by forces from a mysterious Empire forcing him to assimilate into their culture. While the novel takes place in the Star Runners Universe, I wanted Invasion to serve as a new entry point to the series that does not ask the reader to know anything about the existing worlds. I wanted this book to be a fun, quick summer ride. I hope I succeeded.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

More than anyone else, my parents encouraged me to love books. Some of my earliest memories are going to the local library. I remember them telling my extended family I wanted nothing but science fiction and fantasy books for Christmas. I would leave my grandparents house with armloads of new books. The actual writing bug came from my second grade teacher (bless you Mrs. Hennessee, wherever you are) who assigned us a creative writing project instructing us to write whatever we wanted. I loved it. From that moment on, I started writing and my parents supported me by reading my work. I was hooked.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

"Lord of the Rings" hooked me when I was young. It had a significant impact on my early life and the possibilities of world-building.

"Heir to the Empire" by Timothy Zahn surprised me when I was in middle school because I had no idea more Star Wars stories were coming. I had never read a book so fast.

"The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara showcased how interesting history could be in a novel format. I discovered this book by accident and have never forgotten the effect it had on me.

"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy blew my mind when it came out. I bought it at a local bookstore that has since shut down, knowing nothing about the book or the author. I thought it sounded cool. I still remember passages from that novel.

"11.22.63" by Stephen King kept me up nights a couple years ago. It's a doorstopper of a book and I read it in a few days. Amazing.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Timothy Zahn who reignited my interest in Star Wars and space fantasy with "Heir to the Empire." I have always wanted to ask him about writing that particular book since no one to my knowledge had written a brand new authorized novel about the tales of my childhood heroes Leia, Luke and Han other than the "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" by Alan Dean Foster. "Splinter" was an interesting sequel in that it took place in place of Empire Strikes Back, so my question for Mr. Zahn would be about the feeling of continuing the story after the movies. Were you excited? Terrified? Confident? Stumped?

Man, I would love to have coffee with him and chat about this process. I get chills thinking about it.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The escape.

I write to share scenes formed in my mind while driving a lengthy commute or hiking in the woods. For example, scenes in the first Star Runners book came from my dreams as a bullied middle schooler who hadn't hit a growth spurt. Rather than go to school, I wanted to get whisked away to fly a space fighter lightyears from Earth.

I think it's important for all of us to switch off and have dream time. I hope my books can help people grab time to escape.

What is a typical day like for you?

I wake up. Early. Usually between 4 and 5 a.m. On the weekends I don't use an alarm and still often wake up by 7 a.m. I take a walk or hike to clear my head. Then, I drink coffee and write before the world has time to take me away from what I love doing the most.

After 7 a.m., it's time for the real world and all its duties. That will continue until dinner time.

If I have the energy on the weeknight, I will edit some work, but I usually save that for the weekends. Weeknights are for reading, gaming, or watching a movie before I go to sleep and start it all over again in the morning.

What scene in Invasion was your favorite to write?

Tough one. Other than the initial attack on the main character's planet, I enjoyed the training scene when the local resistance attacks the occupying forces. I enjoyed the revelations for the main character, Nat, and his internal battle, wondering if he was on the right side or if his commanding officer was friend or foe. I had fun writing that particular scene because I remember it just played out in my head as I was writing it. I love it when that happens!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I have always lived by a quote often attributed to Mark Twain. "If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything."

Interview with Meredith Allard, Author of Down Salem Way

What can you tell us about your new release, Down Salem Way?

Down Salem Way is set around the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. While Down Salem Way is the prequel to the Loving Husband Trilogy, it was written as a stand-alone novel so you don’t need to read the trilogy to understand the story.
In Down Salem Way, we see two of the characters readers love from the Loving Husband Trilogy, James and Elizabeth Wentworth. They are newly married in January 1691 and they are in the process of creating a warm, loving life together. As time passes, the madness of the Salem witch hunts starts to invade their lives. James and Elizabeth try to keep themselves out of the problems, but inevitably they are caught up in the madness. Readers of the Loving Husband Trilogy know that James and Elizabeth form a bond that will transcend time. While Down Salem Way is literary historical fiction, there are paranormal elements such as vampires and witches, and the love story between James and Elizabeth is central, so there’s a little something for everyone.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember—since elementary school, certainly. I was lucky because my teachers frequently told me I was a good writer, so I grew up thinking I was a good writer. At first I thought I’d become a journalist, then I thought I’d become a screenwriter, but I realized that with my interests and skills I was best suited to writing novels. Reading Charles Dickens in college helped me see what kind of novelist I wanted to be—I wanted to write stories that were entire worlds the way Dickens did.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I’ve read so many books that I’ve loved that it’s hard to narrow it down to five, but I’d have to say my top five are:
1. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
2. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
3. Leaves of Grass, a collection of poetry by Walt Whitman
4. Beloved by Toni Morrison
5. Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I’ve been lucky enough to interview some of my literary idols. I interviewed John Jakes almost twenty years ago, and I’ve also interviewed Jean M. Auel. They were both lovely enough to answer my questions about their writing and researching processes. My favorite response came from John Jakes when I asked him what his next writing project was. He said he had too many ideas for too many books and he’d never live long enough to write all the stories he wanted to. I remember that answer all these years later because I realize how true that is. I also have so many stories I want to write, and I also doubt I’ll get to write them all.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love that I can take these crazy ideas in my head and share them with others. I love that creative writing is about creating new worlds. One of my favorite parts about being an author is hearing from fans all over the world. Thank the literary gods, but the Loving Husband Trilogy has found a devoted audience all over the world. Connecting with people who have read and loved my books is really a treasure I cannot describe.

What is a typical day like for you?

I find I’m most productive in the morning, so I start my own writing first thing (after coffee, of course). I’m also a freelance writer and editor, so my afternoons are usually taken up with writing and editing for others. It’s a great schedule because it allows me my own creative time to write my own books and articles, but it also allows me time to help others with their writing, which I love.

What scene in Down Salem Way was your favorite to write?

Even though Down Salem Way deals with a difficult subject, the Salem witch hunts, it was a joy to write in many ways. Down Salem Way allowed me to look more closely at James and Elizabeth’s life in Salem during the witch trials. Their time in Salem is touched upon in Her Dear and Loving Husband, the first book in the Loving Husband Trilogy, but there wasn’t space to examine that time in much depth in Her Dear and Loving Husband. In Down Salem Way I was able to step back and see what their life was like in the late 17th century. If I had to pick one scene that I particularly enjoyed writing, it is the scene toward the beginning of the novel where James helps to teach Lizzie how to read and he prompts her to read Anne Bradstreet’s “To My Dear and Loving Husband” on her own. Yes, Bradstreet’s poem is where the title Her Dear and Loving Husband comes from, so there’s an obvious connection between the two books.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I love that quote from Walt Disney, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” I’ve found that to be true in my own life. You just have to be brave enough to let your imagination soar.

The Story Behind Sonata by Skye Warren

By Skye Warren

Some authors keep a notebooks by their bedside to jot down ideas. I keep a mental list, not because I’m great at remembering things. I’m terrible at it, which is why I know if an idea won’t leave me alone, it’s important.

From the time I read my very first guardian ward romance, which was Lord of Ice by Gaelen Foley, there was something about the forbidden setup that called me. Since then I’ve discovered many more guardian ward stories in historical romance, such as The Seducer by Madeline Hunter which is one of my favorite books. Lush, complex, and utterly beguiling.

It’s a little less common to see a taboo subject broached in a contemporary romance, but one such book is Nikolai by Roxie Rivera. I love tortured heroes who are restrained by honor but tempted enough to break their own rules. And I love the heroines who have the inevitable innocence of someone in a “ward” position but with the strength to match wits with someone older.

The idea of a contemporary guardian ward story has never left me, and when it spoke to me one more time, I decided to write OVERTURE. Publisher’s Weekly said, “Warren’s tortured, honorable hero will break even the hardest hearts.” Which I love! That’s what I wanted for this book.

Now that SONATA is releasing, the trilogy is complete. Readers can read through three full-length novels to find the taboo, the emotion, and the very sexy scenes that happen when desire breaks free of restraint.

The Story Behind No Good Doctor by Nicole Snow

By Nicole Snow

Woof. Meow. Hiss.

Those are sounds Dr. Gray Caldwell hears in his daily life running The Menagerie, the only vet clinic in small town Heart's Edge. Then there are other noises – the many smitten, breathless ladies who fall all over themselves for a chance at a date with the hottest bachelor in town. Or the dull, numb thud of his own icy heart as he remembers why he closed himself off from love, and how high the stakes can get if he has to re-emerge to protect his town and the people he cares about.

Doc isn't your run-of-the-mill, incredibly handsome and brilliant vet in No Good Doctor, my latest novel. He's also a man of many secrets and the reason Heart's Edge didn't become a disaster zone almost a decade ago.

Doc is a man in stasis, seeking help treating his many furry patients. His new hire, Ember Delwen, should be the perfect vet tech.

But Gray didn't expect a woman like her to walk through his door. So innocent, alive, and intense in a way he hasn't felt since the unspeakable consumed him. This shy, klutzy slip of a girl with a pure heart and an ear for music is nothing but trouble, an irresistible crack in his world.

The attraction is magnetic. Natural. Wrong.

The chemistry is off the charts.

The secrets are insane. Dangerous. Everything Doc vows to protect her from.

Because Ember isn't the only new arrival in Heart's Edge. Two familiar faces storm back into his life with different motives and hazy lies. Doc can only count on two things.

Neither of his old enemies came to do good. And by the time the storm passes, it won't be the good doctor who sorts it out and lays claim to Ember, but the bad one he's locked away inside himself for too long.

This is the story of a man, a hero, a town, and a great big love against the odds. I originally set out to tell a tale about a tough vet with a heart of gold after the only woman who can make him whole again.

Somewhere along the way, this book got steeped in the evolving myth of Heart's Edge, a place where love conquers sinister secrets and everybody is up in everybody's else's business. Small town Americana is where you get the very best of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Maybe that's why this book brings the fire, the feels, and a lot of laughs as Doc and Ember save all the animals and their fellow citizens. But it's also got the unpredictable suspense and angst and riveting side characters I'd like to think people imagine when they say, “Now, that's Nicole Snow!”
