The Gate Beyond Oblivion is a book that I’ve been waiting to write for years. It’s an enormous world on the cusp of a magical revolution. What or who inspired you to become an author?
I’m not sure I can point to any one inspiration. As a child and young man I consumed books from a wide variety of genres, from techno thrillers to science fiction and fantasy. Some of my earliest memories and keepsakes are these small (horrible) stories I wrote on the back of scrap paper my mother gave to me. They were essentially ridiculous action scenes copied from Saturday morning cartoons with perhaps a paragraph of exposition in between.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
That’s actually pretty easy - I’m currently the host of a podcast called The Storied Lives Podcast. The author I’m most looking forward to interviewing is Fonda Lee. I want to know her process for creating a deep and rich family dynamic among her characters in the Green Bone Saga.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
I’ll always love the first draft. There’s something magical about tackling the blank page and creating a world, characters, and stories. I’ve grown to love editing over the years, but the first draft will always be my favorite.
What is a typical day like for you?
I’m a full-time author and a work-from-home father with a young girl at home. I typically wake up pretty early (around 5 am) and write until the rest of the family is up (about 9). Then I put the work away and spend time with my three-year-old daughter. We’ll play and cook and read together until nap. Nap time gives me a little bit more time to do the administrative tasks of being a writer. After she wakes I put the work away for good and enjoy family time until bed.
What scene in The Gate Beyond Oblivion was your favorite to write?
I really enjoyed the final conflicts at the end of the book, but because I want to avoid spoilers, there are a few near the beginning I really enjoyed. The thief, Alena, begins the story comfortably living at home with her family. The scenes between her and her father, in particular, were a joy to write. (As a new parent, I’m completely captivated by father-daughter relationships in all forms of storytelling). They have a strong, healthy relationship that was fun to put on the page.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Not particularly. I’ve been strongly influenced by Stoic philosophy, as well as a study of Zen over the years. I wouldn’t say I’m an adherent to either, but they’ve both shaped the way I look at the world.

What or who inspired you to become an author?
I wrote a book in the third grade and immediately knew I wanted to write books. After I was advised against it by a family member, it took me until I was in college to realize the dream had never left me. I ended up with many careers including bank management, until I recently made the decision to take a leap of faith and write full-time.

This would be an absolute dream. Definitely, Kennedy Ryan. Her books are amazing and such an organic, emotionally relevant level. I’d ask her how she embodies her characters so deeply and seamlessly. We don’t write the same type of books. Mine are modern, funny, pulse-racing contemporary romance experiences, but hers edge of on the side of human darkness while maintaining deep love. It’s amazing.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing about writing is the question, “what if?” It’s taking some part of everyday life and twisting the emotions and characters to see what happens with a little tweak. I love creating characters, but the worlds and circumstances I drop them into are the most fun.
What is a typical day like for you?
Since the Corona virus and social distancing, my day is filled with finding creative ways to help my kids learn and exert energy while I write, edit, get social online, and prepare my newsletter content. When the house is finally calm, I read for me.
What scene in Mixed Match was your favorite to write?
I love meet-cutes. When Sophia and Everett meet, they’re technically enemies, but she doesn’t know it, so there’s instant attraction and all kinds of lovely, heated desire bouncing between them.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
My favorite is “Nothing comes to a sleeper but a dream.” It’s about faith, timing, and putting in the hard work to realize goals and passions. For me, it’s about not only seizing the moment, but creating the moments that matter. Specifically, in my decision to write full-time.

What can you tell us about your new release, Deceit: A Life of Lies?
This book follows the investigation in a small texas town torn apart by a series of brutal murders. The lead detective and criminal profiler, both, are unable to determine if they have the correct man, or if the criminal is still on the run. There is a major twist in the book, which will throw off readers entirely, leading to the main, dramatic climax.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
Many people have inspired me. Primarily my family and my third grade teacher. They all have instilled in me , over the years, the importance of literacy and utilizing my brain in its entirety.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
First and foremost, Gone With The Wind. Followed by: Fahrenheit 451, Murder on Orient Express, In Cold Blood, Carrie

Stephen King. How do you keep your ideas flowing over the many years you’ve written?
What's your favorite thing about writing?
Creating. The ability to create something from my brain that will, hopefully, be entertaining to every reader.
What is a typical day like for you?
Well, I am a nurse consultant, so I work until the evening hours. Then, once I’m home and work is sorted, I begin writing. I work best in the “wee” hours of the morning when everyone is asleep, and there’s total silence.
What scene in Deceit: A Life of Lies was your favorite to write?
The last chapter. I feel the entire book was very exciting and thrilling to write, but the last chapter was my favorite. It tied the entire piece together, and the ending twist made me want to read the book I’ve just written again and again.

From the words of my grandmother: “Anyone can be common, so be uncommon."

What's your favorite thing about writing?
Creating the story and characters. I love the energy, fun, and excitement during that time.

I’m typically in my office ready to write around nine a.m. Monday through Friday. I’m very disciplined so implanting a schedule is easy for me.

What or who inspired you to become an author?
Grief. I was drowning in it. My parents and oldest sister all died unexpectedly a few years ago and I was so depressed I felt dead inside for two years. I still went to work and I didn’t go off the rails or anything, but I was miserable and so sad I didn’t know what to do. One day, I sat down and started writing and I created these characters who had difficult pasts (they’d lost people they love). And I wrote about them finding love with each other and developing that deep bond you have with someone who understands your pain. One of the characters in my stories always happens to be an alien, but...the core of the story...it’s about overcoming grief and hardship to find your soul mate. The person who not only understands that pain but loves the person you have become after going through it.

I’d like to talk to Ruby Dixon and ask her about her process. She’s amazing. She’s able to put out like a book a month on top of everything else she does. Granted, I recognize she follows a formula, but who doesn’t? I mean...that’s what “Romancing the Beat” is all about. 😊 Her books are great because she writes characters that you actually remember and care about beyond reading the books.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
The creative process of sitting down and typing out the first draft and then discovering something about your character that you never knew before. It’s amazing how things like that will just open up who plot arcs, etc.
What is a typical day like for you?
I’m a healthcare provider, so I work the regular 8 to 5 weekdays. But I try to writing during lunch and when I get home, I write every chance I get.
What scene in The Edge of it All was your favorite to write?
The part where they are looking at the stars and she tells him that her father always said, “If you learn the stars, you’ll never be lost.” Well, here she is, in this entirely unknown part of the galaxy, lost. Soran is showing her the star as they can be seen from his homeworld. And she tells him, “I don’t know these stars, Soran. They’re not mine.” So, then he begins to teach her the constellations and she realizes he’s doing this, so that she won’t feel so lost. Tear-jerker scene. 😊
