Interview with Isabel Jolie, Author of Breathe

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Breathe?

Breathe is the second novel in The Twisted Vines series. The series was inspired by a trip to Napa Valley. During my tours of the vineyards, I kept thinking about life in the valley and what kinds of things could happen in the underground passages.

The Twisted Vines series itself centers on a group of hacktivists. In researching the hacking world, I became fascinated by the feasibility of hacking the US power grid, and the life altering implications should that occur. The risk to our power grid comes out to play in Breathe.

The heart of the story is a second chance romance. I’m a sucker for second chance romances. There are so many ways a couple can get torn apart, and then so much can happen in the years that follow. Sometimes it can require an acceptance of change.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Hands down, romance is my favorite genre to read! I am partial to contemporary romance, although I do love some historical. And yes, I write contemporary romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

On the Six by Patricia Eddy (it’s a book club pic), Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend by Penny Reid, and The Rogue by Kimberly Kincaid.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There’s a scene where David and Kairi are walking through her family vineyard, and he’s asking her about their time apart and he’s trying to temper his jealousy. Kairi ends up standing up for herself and setting him straight, and it makes him want her that much more. It’s a turning point for them, and the explicit scenes that follow are pure fantasy and fun to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My dog is almost always right beside me, as is a cup of coffee. And I’m a morning writer. I more or less follow the schedule outlined by Stephen King. He writes every morning. Except, I think he goes on a long walk and takes the afternoon off. I’m not there yet. I eat lunch, edit, and do marketing stuff until it’s dark.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

We regret most the things we do not do. When I hesitate, I think of that line. And it helps propel me forward. Even though it’s not entirely true, because there are some things I have done that I do regret. But, it’s the spirit of that idea. Whether it’s flying down a zipline or hitting the publish button, we have one life. And that life is a work in progress.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I wouldn't say that there is one thing to remember. I think with romance, it's a feeling, an emotion. And I hope that reading evokes warm, happy feelings.

Interview with Michael Chatfield, Author of The Ninth Realm

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Ninth Realm?

A need to feed the readers!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Ninth Realm, what would they be?

Maybe another one bites the dust by Queen...

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read fantasy science fiction and a mix of all kinds of mashups within those two.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I have about 15 books right now... mostly darker realistic fantasy with a side of fun fantasy, and science fiction.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There are some training scenes which were really fun, I won't say too much - spoilers!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write out a lot of what the characters are going through on pads of paper, and sometimes post-its, which can make my office look like the scene of a mad house.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Nothing is impossible and if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The conversation between Erik and his fellow student at the end of the book.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Where he first tells her about the cedar box!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Never give up and keep writing, marketing, and speaking even on the hard days when I'm tired or discouraged! This is where my readers lift me up, inspire me, support, and encourage me. I love them.

Interview with Marc Secchia, Author of Dragon Fires Rising

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Dragon Fires Rising: Books 1-3: The Complete Box Set?

Two things: One, I wanted to do a more lighthearted humorous fantasy tale than my usual epic fantasy stories because Covid has been so hard for everyone. Two, I wanted to play with the dominant racial power dynamic and so have a black female protagonist who is, by definition, the most beautiful woman in the world, and all these white knights would swoon at her feet.

So while it is a funny tale, a turn-around of the "Dragon kidnaps princess" trope, it does have a few more serious elements thrown in. I grew up under apartheid and so race/diversity has become a recurrent theme in my writing.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Dragon Fires Rising: Books 1-3: The Complete Box Set, what would they be?

Azania "This girl is on fire" (Alicia Keys), Thundersong "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Queen - 'thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening me!').

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes indeed. Fantasy all the way!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Ava Richardson - Torvald Dragon Riders.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

It's the one where Azania and Thundersong come across a white prince bathing in a river, and he gets so terrified he sprints off downriver with his bare buttocks flashing in the sunshine.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a set of favourite epic dragon music tracks that I fairly much always listen to when I'm writing.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Life's too short to treat people with anything but love.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Different is not threatening. It is beautiful.
