Interview with Shelley Kassian, Author of A Mountain Leads Home

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Mountain Leads Home, Their True Love Story?

My daughter and son-in-law inspired the holiday romance, A Mountain Leads Home. If not for a snowboarding accident and my daughter's role as a trauma nurse, two people would never have met. While the relationship developed quickly, there have been many challenges and gratefully, one happily-ever-after.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Mountain Leads Home, Their True Love Story, what would they be?

The song "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros was chosen early in the writing process, which is why 'home' is a strong theme in the story. Home is wherever you are.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read books in several genres. Royalty influences my fantasy novels, but romantic stories where people find their one true love will always motivate new love stories.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Jane Porter: Flirting with Forty & Jennifer Snow: A Lot like Christmas

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Chapter One: A man against the elements, excited to explore snowboarding in the Canadian Rockies. It was important to get it right, to reveal my son-in-law's excitement prior to hurting himself. He's still nervous about that run after the Strawberry Express Lift...

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

An hourglass or a lit candle. Lots of objects in my writing space, picked up from my travels, to inspire my imagination.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I'm a tragic romantic. Love lives at the heart of my being. This is my favorite quote: Where there is love, there is life. -Mahatma Gandhi

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. In order to find love or anything else in life, it's important to take chances and reach for what you really want. Take that first all-important step.

Interview with Lisa Renee Jones, Author of Bastard Boss

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Bastard Boss?

When I wrote my Necklace Trilogy, Tyler and Bella were both side characters who I absolutely got sideswiped by and I just had to tell their story!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Thrillers. I write both romances and thrillers, but am more drawn to thrillers for reading because it helps keep my brain moving in the right direction for my deadlines 🙂

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Any book by one of the attending authors of Readers Take Denver! I'm hosting my first-ever reader convention next year, and I am trying to make sure I've read at least one book by all the amazing authors who have agreed to attend - and that's an incredibly long list at this point!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The finale scene was very emotional for me to write, but so was Tyler & Bella’s first night together. So either of those for certain.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Well my husband and I have what we call “the zoo” – two golden retrievers and two kitty cats and I typically write in our room with all of them surrounding me on the bed, or in the dining room with them at my feet. And of course, coffee. Always have to have coffee.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Everything (within reason) happens for a reason. It’s hard to justify the injustices in the world, but a lot of negative things in life can turn you toward better positives if you can persevere. But I’m also very aware of the injustices of life, in which case that motto most certainly doesn’t work. But for day-to-day disappointments, “everything happens for a reason” can offer solace and optimism.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Well if I'm being selfish, I would say I hope they remember me and my books 🙂 But in a more philosophical sense, I hope they remember that going after what you want may not always end up the way you imagined, but sometimes it’s very much worth the risk.

Interview with Diane E. Samson, Author of Shadow of Death

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Shadow of Death?

Shadow of Death is a companion novel to the Gems of Fire series. It’s the backstory of Jack, who is Anna’s love interest. When writing the other books, I kept extensive notes for Jack’s character, and I decided that the story of his life before he met Anna needed to be told. It brings greater depth and richness to the overall series and helps the reader understand his motivations and heart-wrenching decisions later. I fell in love with him all over again!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Shadow of Death, what would they be?

Jack: Memories by Maroon 5; Meisha: Breakfast by Dove Cameron; Zor: Better by Khalid; Majstor: Cold as Ice by Foreigner

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read is definitely what I write, Young Adult or New Adult fantasy, but I also read historical novels, including historical romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Oh wow. You would ask! I have so so many. Top of mind are The Stolen Kingdom by Bethany Atazadeh and Bow Before the Elf Queen. I also need to catch up on a ton of Elise Kova’s books!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Definitely the scene with Lucia at the ball in Puledor. Jack hates dancing so I love to force him into it as much as possible!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I’m not sure if this is a quirky habit, but I tend to daydream about certain scenes before I write them. Sometimes I can keep a scene in mind for months, which is probably a little strange!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I’m a Christian and Proverbs 3:5-6 is an essential philosophy for me. If you trust in the Lord with all your heart, He’ll make your paths straight. Easier said than done!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

In the acknowledgements I write: “His (Jack’s) story reminds me too that no matter how deep the valley or how dark the night, if we are open to the possibility, there is always light and hope. Seek and you will find.” Jack’s story is darker than the rest, but hope is not far away.

Interview with Michelle Cox, Author of A Spying Eye

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Spying Eye?

I was researching stolen art for ideas for book six of the series and came upon the Ghent Altarpiece. I quickly realized that wrapping the mystery around this famous piece of art would be perfect. Not only was a portion of it really stolen in 1934, but it was coveted by Hitler for very bizarre reasons, which added to the drama of the story. AND, best of all, the panel that was stolen in 1934 has never been recovered, which gave me a lot of wiggle room to imagine what could have happened to it!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Spying Eye, what would they be?

My perfect theme songs would be: "They Say," performed by Artie Shaw and Helen Forrest, or "Let's Fall in Love" performed by Ella Fitzgerald!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I adore historical fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

"Life after Life" by Kate Atkinson, "Jamaica Inn" by Daphne du Maurier, and "The Starless Sea" by Erin Morgenstern.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where Henrietta is lured up to the elderly Baron Von Harmon's room in hopes of him showing her the missing painting she seeks. Instead, he shows her a very different sort of painting. He is mentally a bit unstable and thinks Henrietta is a former paramour. Personally, I found his attempts to seduce the frustrated Henrietta to be hilarious!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Ha! No. Just black coffee, early morning, lights off except one small, old-fashioned desk lamp.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Write every day!

Interview with Stacy Von Haegert, Author of Forged of Fire

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Forged of Fire?

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Fire and Blood by George RR Martin.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The battle scene at the end.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My calico cat must always be in my lap.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

It is what it is.

How it made them feel.

Interview with Andrew Rivas, Author of A Nice Place Full of Good People

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Nice Place Full of Good People?

In February of 2018, I attempted suicide and was illegally held in a psych ward for seventeen days. I had always wanted to be an author but had never finished any manuscripts. Upon being discharged I decided to turn the experience into something productive and chronicle the time I spent there. I spent the next month in a hurried panic, desperately trying to get my time there on to the page before it faded from memory.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main character of A Nice Place Full of Good People, what would they be?

Kind of a weird answer because the main character is me, but Serotonin by Girl in Red fits really well.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genres to read are definitely science fiction and fantasy (most of the time a mix between the two), and they are also by far my favorite to write. Taking something that doesn’t exist and making it relevant to the human experience, to our base fears and wants, is very fun for me. Writing ANPFOGP was rewarding, but challenging and very upsetting to write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I've been meaning to finally start Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett; I hear the Discworld series is excellent. I also just bought Candlekeep Mysteries, a D&D manual, because I want to try DMing for my friends.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The "extended metaphor" scene, by far. It's actually an amalgamation of three different conversations I had in the psych ward. Molly's description of addiction and my description of depression makes me tear up every time I reread it. I'm really proud of it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write in bursts of twenty minutes or so. I find it very hard to write for extended periods of time; it’s much easier for me to write in ten to twenty minute increments throughout the day than to write for three hours straight. Not sure if that’s weird or not, but that’s how I write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I don’t have a singular motto I live by, but I try to be as kind and understanding as I can be, and I value empathy very highly in the people I choose to keep around me.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Even if it doesn't feel like it, you are valued, you are loved, and you will be missed if you do something drastic like I did. There are ALWAYS people willing to talk; talk to family, call a help line, talk to friends even if you don't think they'll understand. Hell, email me! Hurting yourself is never the answer.
