Interview with Amélie S. Duncan, Author of The Billionaire’s Arrangement

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Billionaire’s Arrangement (The Kept Trilogy) Book 1?

I always wanted to write another billionaire romance. The Billionaire’s Arrangement is a spin-off from my book, The Tiger Lily Trilogy. Paul Crane is the son of Jonas Crane, the hero. I struggled with finding the right heroine. Then I came across the song Harvest Moon by Neil Young, and I envisioned Nadia Sokol and her family. There are also a few lifts from my life and experiences.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Billionaire’s Arrangement (The Kept Trilogy) Book 1, what would they be?

With A Little Luck, by Paul McCartney and Wings. The song speaks to both characters. They can make it together if they are willing to open themselves up to love.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read is Billionaire Romance, and it’s also my favorite to write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The book I’m most looking forward to reading next is This Woman by Jodi Ellen Malpas. I loved the This Man series.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The trip to Paris! I had so much fun exploring fantasies.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to write at four am. It’s quiet and dark that I enjoy the most. I think it’s a leftover from my goth life.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Besides being grateful for everything, there is a lyric by the group, The Psychedelic Furs, that I feel drawn to these days. It’s from their song, Love My Way, “You can never win or lose if you don’t run the race.” If you don’t put yourself out there, you are limiting yourself from a world of experiences. So, I write, learn, grow, and enjoy it!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There are two more books to complete the series, LOL!

Interview with A.L. Hawke, Author of My Evil Eye

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write My Evil Eye?

Ever since writing CORA in 2019 (Cora is the Greek goddess Persephone), I’ve wanted to revisit Cora’s world of Greek myth and romance in our modern times. But I was looking for something new and fresh. I came up with Cora’s friend, Gorgiana. Gorgiana (aka Medusa) narrates this book and my new release novella The Guardian.

In My Evil Eye, Gorgiana enjoys an uneventful life shelving and reading books in Florida, until she falls in love with a handsome college student named Asher. But to pursue her new crush, Gorgi has to hide her disabilities from him. She can’t reveal to him that her gaze turns people to stone. She can’t get too angry or she’ll transform into a monster. She can’t go outside under sunlight or her snakes will appear in her hair. And she has to guard Ash from harm in her never-ending ancient war with the Greek gods.

The direct inspiration for Medusa, of course, came from her origin myth. Thousands of years ago, Medusa was a model priestess in Athena’s temple. One day she was raped by the sea god Poseidon. When Athena found out, she didn’t punish Poseidon, she punished Medusa. This injustice is still going on today in my story. It became a new focus for these two novels in my Furies series.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of My Evil Eye, what would they be?

I’d pick two. “Somebody Someone” by Korn. Music from the band Korn reminds me of Gorgiana/Medusa. One minute it’s calm, the next the singer sounds like a total psycho (which I love). That shifting of personalities is very much like Medusa.

The second would be “Anyone” by Justin Bieber. Gorgiana loves Justin Bieber. She even sings one of his songs in the novel!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read many different genres—from horror to classics to epic fantasy. But all of the stories have to be an escape from everyday life. Mostly, I read what I write: fantasy romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m writing a paranormal romance about angels. This will be something new for me. We’ll see. The main manuscript is done and I’m very excited about the upcoming project.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I enjoyed writing all the action and mayhem from the battle scenes, but I probably had the most fun writing character dialog. I loved the scene where Cora meets up with Gorgi in a coffee house; another great one is the interrogation of Gorgi by Hades. These scenes were fun because I watched the action unfold just like the reader will. The characters sort of wrote the chapters for me.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Music and nitro brews. I often have coffee… but I always have music. Music provides inspiration and mood.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

No. I’m looking for one...

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I think we all have a monster deep inside us. So Gorgiana’s struggles really are our own. But, here’s the kicker: I discovered that although Gorgiana’s a monster, she’s probably the greatest heroine I’ve ever created. Perhaps her challenges and sufferings make her heroism all that much greater.

Interview with Charity Mae, Author of The Enthronement

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Enthronement?

When I was a child, I loved the Princess and the Pea retelling by Gail Carson Levine and decided I wanted to write my own princess test story, and after reading many books in the genre, I was finally inspired with the first scene of The Enthronement which is Chapter 38.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Enthronement, what would they be?

Oh man, this is a hard one because I have playlists for both of my main characters. For the first book though... for Kascia I think I’d pick “Final Masquerade” by Linkin Park, though again I have a WHOLE playlist of songs for her during this first book on Spotify, this one I think captures her overall mood in this book.

As for Gavril... that is even harder, but I’d go with the song that when it plays I think of him in the first book for sure is “She’s My Girl” By Five for Fighting. I’ve not released his playlist yet, but there are a lot of songs for him too I’ll share one day.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I like dystopian style stories and not so much that they are dystopian so to speak, but I like they have a more serious and dramatic undertones vs light and fluffy. I’m a happy endings fan for sure, but I like those style of stories in fantasy and sci-fi.

I mostly write fairytale retellings that aim for this type of feeling. But I really only write fantasy, whereas I find these days I read a lot more sci-fi for pleasure and fairytale retellings to help me be a better writer.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Oh dear, it’s a big one. I want to read the new duology that goes with the Lunar Chronicles. I loved those books. Those books are my jam. Also rereading Michael Vey right now so I can get to the new book. A Thousand Heartbeats by Kira Cass is one I’m meaning to read. I love her way of doing the romance (Though I often miss the darker elements in her works). Also Nancy Campell Allen has come out with a few new Steampunk Proper Romance books I want to catch up on. She’s a good one I like to reference for twisting a fairytale well. I could go on all day, so I’ll just leave it at those.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

For The Enthronement... I think it might be a tie between the first scene that came into my mind Chapter 38 and the moment on the bridge in Chapter 36. It’s the raw emotion between the characters I love and the tension of their struggles. I actually will write the scene from each character’s point of view to make it as authentic as possible, and these two really came out great.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Scents. I have to have the right scent in the air to get into the mood. I was just getting frustrated the other day the one I associate with The Enthronement ran out and none of my local stores had it. It’s scents for me. And I never seem to get to pick which one for each book either.

For The Enthronement, it’s the cleaning solution I was using when the idea for The Enthronement came into my head, which is an annoying hard smell to replicate.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I don’t know if I could boil down the philosophy or quote I live by. But one thing I’m working hard to learn and be better at is knowing that time to rest and recharge in the end makes you more productive. So the quote I’ve been using lately to teach myself and others is “follow your energy.” When you’re in the mood for one productive project, follow it, and if your energy calls for a break, have the courage to follow it.

I REALLY struggle with this as I am used to forcing myself to get things done I don’t want to do (like homework) and though there are times for that for sure, I need to learn that it’s okay to “follow my energy” too.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I don’t know if it’s that I want them to “remember” but I do want them to really think about what it means to be a true princess. What does all of this duty and protocol really mean and why? I think it’s a topic we all may have our own opinion of, but it’s a concept I think worth thinking and debating over, most of all for young girls who are still trying to find their identities.

Interview with Renee Rose, Author of Don't Make Me

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Don't Make Me?

Don't Make Me is a forbidden romance between the daughter of a mafia boss and her father's right-hand man. While it's mafia romance, it's not terribly dark, but more erotic (with elements of BDSM) in nature.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Dark romance is definitely my favorite to read. I love alpha-holes and anti-heroes!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm reading A. L. Jackson's Never Look Back and it's amazing!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There's a great redemption scene at the very end that I absolutely loved. Don't want to give any spoilers, though. 🙂

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I sometimes dictate in the car because that's when I get my best ideas!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I believe in law of attraction, so I believe our thoughts become our reality.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

My editor had to wake her husband up for a little *relief* after editing my book, so I can only hope I help everyone's sex lives that way! (wink)
