Interview with Jennifer Probst, Author of Unbreak My Heart

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Unbreak My Heart?

This story is chock full of all the things I love in a great romance so I decided to write my own! I'm addicted to Italian food and wine, Frank Sinatra, the opera, and come from a big Italian family. I'm also addicted to sexual tension in my romance novels, along with an alpha hero who needs to redeem himself to the heroine. Combining these elements and adding in a heartbreaking second chance love story with super steamy scenes? I had so much fun writing it!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Unbreak My Heart, what would they be?

Insensitive by Jan Arden! This was the song that inspired the basic ideas of the book -- about a woman who was falling hard for a man who didn't seem to care. That was the seed that grew into Unbreak My Heart.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love psychological thriller and horror. I also love contemporary romance in all genres. To be honest, I read all over the map and make sure I always am trying to expand my boundaries with books.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Ignition Sequence by Joey W Hill, The Love of My Life by Rosie Walsh, The Guncle by Steven Rowley, Holly by Stephen King, and SO MANY MORE!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I love the big dramatic scenes where the hero comes to terms with his mistakes and the heroine forgives him. It's full of emotion and angst and it gets me every time so that was my favorite to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, I'm actually quite tame! I like to have a hot beverage at my side, and always play music - I create specific playlists for all of my books. Other than that, I can write anywhere.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Trade your expectations for appreciation and your whole life will change.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Love is never an easy straight path but there are endless possibilities for happiness and hope for the ones brave enough to leap.

Interview with John Daulton, Author of Star Cluster 66

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Star Cluster 66?

I think a lot of guys these days, especially older guys, feel picked on and disrespected in the media. Like the pariahs of global history. If anything is bad in society, it’s because of people like “Them.” Any thought of mentioning such feelings is met with, “Now you know what it feels like” type attitudes. So they don’t bring it up. Which is totally in character. These are the types to tough it out or walk it off. They don’t whine and can’t stand whiners. But while they act like they don’t care what society thinks about them, and men like them throughout history, they do care. These are people who work hard, sacrifice for others every single day of their lives, who never meant disrespect to anyone, the first people to jump in and lend a hand. To bear the burden for others. Always have, always will. Regardless of how poorly they are treated in return, by life or by others. That is how they see themselves. Good men with good hearts and good intentions. So I wrote this book for them. It’s an homage to the days before the internet, to the cruise and the time of car culture and physical interactions in actual space. A time when in-person relationships facilitated better understanding of one another, and where the physical realities of human existence were evident and assumed. Plus, I like long books and bawdy humor, and so do a lot of those guys.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Star Cluster 66, what would they be?

Somewhere between the Mission Impossible theme song and the theme to the Benny Hill show.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read all over the place, not just science fiction and fantasy. I love biographies and history books. I love the classics, and every time there's a reference to some great work of literature I haven't read, it triggers my OCD and I have to go get that. I read science, anthropology, sociology, and psychology books too. I've even been making my way through the One Piece manga series over the last couple of years. All of that factors into science fiction and fantasy in one way or another, so I suppose technically yes, I do read in the same genre I write. Sort of.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

1. The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss. 2. The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde. 3. The Passenger, by Cormac McCarthy. 4. Makers of Rome, by Plutarch. 5. All Systems Red, by Martha Wells.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Anything with the character Kevin in it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a paper calendar on the wall that I color in the square on any day I work on a book. I can look across the room and see it at all times. Any stretch of too much whiteness makes me feel like a lazy piece of crap, and I crack the whip on myself to get moving.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Make a plan. Write it down. Schedule the component pieces. Stick to it. (I can't imagine any other way to achieve any large goal or project.)

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That people are good and life is complicated. Take a breath, give people a chance to reveal their hearts to you. Nobody fits the stereotypes. Nobody.

Interview with Joshua Clark, Author of Verses of the Void

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Verses of the Void?

I promised to publish and dedicate this novel in honor of my bandmate Bob, who passed away from cancer in 2021. The concept originated in a short story for a 2015 writing course in college, and the characters were too fun to abandon after a handful of pages. In building the world around the characters, I was inspired by the challenges that humanity faces today: heating geopolitical tension, worsening climate extremes, scarcity of food and water, and fundamental extremism. I wanted a story conditional to a future that our descendants may contend with.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Verses of the Void, what would they be?

Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden (Whisper); House of the Rising Sun by The Animals

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Sci-fi, espionage thrillers, suspense.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Lords of Uncreation

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

It's tied between Prometheus Wept and Event Horizon.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I’m a meticulous plotter, I’ve catalogued a notebook's worth of miscellaneous material and probably tossed several more in drafts and concepts.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The golden rule!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Earth is our lifeline.

Interview with Tyler Nicholas, Author of Legends of Aidris: Rise to Power

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Legends of Aidris: Rise to Power?

The idea behind the story came randomly for me. I would say reading Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time is what gave me some of the ideas. I was writing a different book series at the time (that I finished before starting this one), so I sat on this one for a couple of years and in that time, I kept getting more and more ideas for the story that I made sure to make notes of and here we are!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

This really depends on my mood at the time. If I was asked this question 3-4 years ago, I would have told you sci-fi/fantasy like Star Wars and Halo. Nowadays, my favorite genre is medieval fantasy and I am always looking for new series to read. For now, it is the same genre I am writing!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I recently finished Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series and I am currently searching for my next fantasy series to read. I will hopefully find one in the next few weeks.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

This is a hard one. I would say one of my favorites was the scene when Talon takes his throne and a scene he has with Besurlde later on in the book.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not really. The closest I would say is listening to rock music while writing or nothing at all. Don't think that is a quirk but it's the closest I have.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Tough question to answer. I would say a philosophy I live by would be fixing things that make me unhappy. I always strive to keep myself happy and if I am unhappy about something, to fix it. Nothing specific to writing though.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Oof, this is another hard question. Other than the typical "I hope they enjoy it and read the next one", I would say I hope they remember the characters. That was the best answer I could think of!

Interview with Douglas Phillips, Author of Quantum Chaos

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Quantum Chaos?

Quantum Chaos is book 5 in a series, which began in 2017 on an idea that had been floating in my head for decades: extra dimensions of space.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Quantum Chaos, what would they be?

Warning by Green Day

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Sci-Fi baby!!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Peter Cawdron's The Art of War, Martha Wells's Witch King, Alastair Reynolds's Detonation Boulevard, Ginger Booth's Skyship Thrive

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Too many to list! But I have to say, it's hard to beat the crew of a Chitza scout ship grooving to a drumbeat while their enthusiastic safety officer dances down the aisle handing out ChitzaPops. Gives me warm fuzzies.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Sometimes I'll wake up at 3 AM with a thought on my mind that MUST be written down right that minute!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Science fiction begins with science.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We might not know everything yet, but the true nature of reality is discoverable.

Interview with Jade West, Author of The Man Upstairs

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Man Upstairs?

A guy my best friend was/is seeing, actually. He reminded me of a Julian, and has a... past. It's what inspired the story. That and the fact I LOVE big age gaps. I had crushes on teachers from when I was really young, and dated my 42-year-old boss in real life when I was 18. It's always a hot one for me.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes. I love reading filth as much as I love writing it. I had a dirty old paperback of short filthy stories when I was quite young, and I ADORED them, even from then.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Too many to even list. I'm very behind on it. I also love psychology books, so I have some on archetypal myths and legends at the top of the pile.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The dirty whisk.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No more quirky habits in writing than in real life - which are quite a few!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

One who looks outside, dreams. One who looks inside, awakens. Carl Jung.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The whisk.

Interview with Felix Alexander, Author of The Secret of God's Banker

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Secret of God's Banker?

I was originally going to write a different story as book 3 in the Aiden Leonardo series, but when I saw a documentary about the murder of God's Banker in the early 1980s, and how it remains an unsolved murder, a new story began to formulate in my mind. Before I knew it, this story quickly became a great segue connecting book 2 (The Secret of Scripture) to what will now be book 4 in the series (The Secret of Religion).

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My preferences are mystery, fantasy, romance, and poetry for both reading and writing, so I write in all of those genres totaling 13 published books with two more currently in the query stage.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

What books aren't?! The conundrum for me is that I read multiple books at a time and jump from one to the other at any given moment. Probably something to do with my ADHD!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The big reveal at the Baha'i Temple, because I actually went there to get a feel for the environment and stayed there for a few hours one Sunday afternoon to take it all in, and then finding the words to present it to my readers.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to sit on the same spot on the couch with my laptop, notebooks, and caffeine in the mornings, or a scotch in the evenings.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Your life is your story. Take it one word at a time, one page at a time, and you'll eventually write your happily ever always."

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Remember that all I am doing is presenting you with a lens through which you may see different perspectives about life, love, and faith.
