Interview with Winter Renshaw, Author of Hate Mail

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Hate Mail?

I've written nearly every trope under the sun, but I hadn't written an arranged marriage book yet. I wanted to do my own spin on it while staying true to my brand (angsty, enemies to lovers).

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Hate Mail, what would they be?

Make You Feel My Love — for both characters! (It has a special significance in the book).

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

It's a tie between psychological thrillers and romance! I like to alternate the two with both reading and writing. I call romances my "palette cleansers" because sometimes I need something feel-good after something dark.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

More books than I could list. I have them stocked away in drawers and cabinets and on random shelves throughout my house. I can't stop buying them even though I never have time to read as much as I'd like!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Ah! It has to do with the twist, so I can't say more than that! 😉

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I always have the cover made before I start writing because it sets the tone. It's difficult for me to start a new book without one!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Progress over perfection. I've always had an all-or-nothing perfectionistic mindset, and I've been working hard to change that.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Not to much remember... I just want them to close the book and to have enjoyed the time they spent in that world.

Interview with Kimberly Readnour, Author of Love Schemes, Clouded Dreams

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Love Schemes, Clouded Dreams?

This small-town romance is a continuation of the Sugar Creek Falls series. The characters played a major role in book one and screamed for their own book. Although I had backed myself into a corner with their ages, it resulted in one heck of a forbidden age gap!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre is definitely romance! I read a few nonfiction titles on occasion, but nothing beats a couple falling in love.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I don't even know where to start. It's so long. I mainly listen to audiobooks these days since I drive for work.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I would have to say my favorite scenes include the meddling mothers. It turns out Ansley isn’t the only one scheming. 😉

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Quick answer is no quirky writing habits. Since I still work outside of writing, I have to steal time to get the words in. Unless you want to count coffee. I do like a steaming cup of joe sitting beside me while I write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Years ago, I was at the bookstore looking for stocking stuffers for my children. On a bookmark, a shortened quote, “Never, never, never quit” from Winston Churchill stood out to me. Needless to say, each child received that bookmark, and I have repeatedly reminded them of his words. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t live by that motto myself.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I wanted this book to be light and funny but full of love. My goal was for the reader to feel fulfilled and happy when they put the book down. Nothing is better than finishing a book and having that “swoony” feeling. Ahhhhh, true love.

Interview with Kate Reynolds, Author of Pheemie’s War

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Pheemie’s War: Coming of Age in WWII?

I have always been drawn to stories about World War 2 because my dad was in the army, and my mother was a Red Cross worker, both stationed in England. My mother used to tell wonderful stories about her life in Minnesota before the war, and it sounded like she had such fun. The initial germ of the idea for Pheemie’s War came when I began to wonder what would happen if a couple of teenage kids went too far in their enthusiasm.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Pheemie’s War: Coming of Age in WWII, what would they be?

What a Feeling, the theme song from Flash Dance.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Probably historical fiction, but I also love mysteries and literary fiction. I read almost anything.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Work Song by Ivan Doig; The House in the Cerulean Sea, by TJ Klune; The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Phillip Sendker; The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese; The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai, to name a few.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Without a doubt, it’s the scene towards the very end of the book when Pheemie faces the consequences of bad decisions.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

When finishing up my writing for the day, I always make sure to stop mid-scene. That way, the next morning, I start right off full of enthusiasm for writing the end of the scene.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Albert Einstein once wrote this: “The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them.” This quote reminds me not to take the easy answers, but rather to reach for something new.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Reach for the very best that is already inside of you.

Interview with Barbara Nolan, Author of Wicked Lies

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Wicked Lies?

I have always wanted to write a mafia series and this is loosely based on when my husband and I owned restaurants and nightclubs.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Wicked Lies, what would they be?

Born to Be Wild.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Mystery and Suspense.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Summer House and Just the Nicest Couple.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved the last scene because it goes in a completely different direction than the reader probably suspects. I usually don't write cliffhangers but this one will definitely have you on the edge of your seat.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Reading is a luxury, writing is a necessity.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That they had fun reading it and felt like they were part of the world I created.

Interview with Skye Warren, Author of Red Flags

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Red Flags?

Characters come to me first, usually. So I imagined Sienna as a young woman stuck in a small town full of rumors and prejudice, a woman who longed to leave but didn't have the resources. Then one day the circus comes to town. It's a modern circus, without magic of the traditional kind. But there's a special kind of magic that comes from opportunity. And from Logan Whitmere, the mysterious owner.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I'm obsessed with romance of all kinds, including contemporary (which I write), as well as historical, paranormal, and suspense. Some of my favorite authors are Lisa Kleypas, Laura Griffin, and Annabel Joseph.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm finally allowing myself to read the Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas. I've been a huge fan of her other books for a long time, but waited until many books in her newest series were out before starting.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I usually write with my dog snuggled against me and, if I'm lucky, a fresh cold boba tea.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Let it go.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Sienna is Asian American, like me, so I infused some of my own experiences into the book.
