Interview with Cecily Walters, Author of The Ghosts of Nothing

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Ghosts of Nothing?

I read The Hobbit as a teen and became fascinated by the elves of Mirkwood, who appeared, with their campfire and food and warm conversation, just out of reach of Bilbo and the dwarves. This ignited an interest in fairy mythology, especially the mythology of the will-o’-the-wisp or other phantom lights said to appear in the woods and lead travelers astray. Imagining who or what might be behind those lights eventually led to this story.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Ghosts of Nothing, what would they be?

For my main character Nelly: Strange Little Girl by The Stranglers and Blinding by Florence + The Machine.

The Town of Nothing: Seuls by Bruno Coulais (From Les Choristes)

Fig and Jack: Aha! by Imogen Heap and Aventine by Agnes Obel

The fairy world: Tokka by Agnes Obel

Doed: Comatose by Sød Ven

The Ghost: Ipswich by Georgi Kay

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read has always been fantasy, but lately I’ve become interested in historical fiction as well. I suppose there’s a bit of overlap there. The same goes for what I prefer to write — fantasy and (more recently) historical fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’ve been meaning to read The Stolen Heir by Holly Black, Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett and The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff. I’m also keen to start The Last Kingdom Series by Bernard Cornwell.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There were quite a few scenes I had fun writing, but the one that first comes to mind is the scene with the Piper. That scene was very creepy. I actually creeped myself out writing that one. But it was fun to write even so.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write early drafts in comic sans. I know it’s a silly font to look at, but I read somewhere once that the ridiculousness of the font has a freeing effect on the imagination and prevents perfectionism. I found this really worked for me, so I’ve been doing it ever since.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I wouldn’t say I live by this quote necessarily, but I think about it a lot, and it certainly influenced some of the ideas in The Ghosts of Nothing. “Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.” —Nietzsche

I think a lot about the problem of good and evil and how so many people, now and in the past, have committed terrible acts of evil while sincerely believing themselves to be doing good. I think the tendency to dehumanize those we see as evil and the failure to recognize the potential for evil in the self or in those "on our side" is extremely dangerous. At the core of most of my writing, I’m wrestling with this problem.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I only hope readers get something out of the book, whether that’s a fantasy world to escape to, a fun story, or profound thoughts about the nature of good and evil. If readers get something out of the book, I’ll feel I have done my job.

Interview with Candace Irving, Author of Beneath the Bones

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Beneath the Bones?

Beneath the Bones is book 3 in my gritty Hidden Valor military veteran/K-9 suspense series. The heroine, Kate Holland, is a former US Army CID agent & POW with severe PTSD. As a military veteran, I wanted to portray PTSD realistically throughout the series.

Because cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is the preferred treatment for the military, VA, and thousands of psychiatrists and psychologists around the world, I chose CPT for Kate. I emailed its creator, Dr. Patricia Resick, during my research. Not only did Dr. Resick respond, she loaned me her incredible expertise as I crafted Kate's therapy arc. Dr. Resick helped me dig so much deeper into Kate's mind than I'd have thought possible.

The result? While Kate's PTSD is pure fiction, her recovery and its timeline are quite real. Even better—because it's based in reality—Kate's PTSD arc actually drives the suspense plot at times, affecting her current murder investigations in surprising ways. How cool is that?

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading all sorts of mysteries & thrillers, though I tend to stick to non-fiction and memoirs when I'm actively writing.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Wow. That's tough one—mostly because any scene with Kate’s 3-year-old German Shepherd has to be in the running. I'd never written a dog or other animal into a suspense before Ruger, let alone so deeply. I'd initially decided to give Kate a dog as a coping mechanism—since, well, she was coping before the first book opened and her PTSD began to rage. But from word one of the first draft of book 1 (The Garbage Man), Ruger stole the show. The lovable snot’s been stealing it every book since. At times, Ruger drives the plot. At others, he provides a bit of desperately needed comic relief for what’s admittedly a very dark, gritty & graphic mystery series. But no matter how or why Ruger appears, he tends to steal the show.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

PTSD can be a crippling and pervasive syndrome—not only among our nation's veterans, but amid folks from every country and every walk of life. Because of this, I’ve listed a few official, real-world links for PTSD & CPT on the Hidden Valor series page on my website. If you're suffering from PTSD or know someone who is, please check out the information & assistance at the ends of the links.

Interview with Greg Eilers, Author of Kit & Cassie

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Kit & Cassie?

The story behind the story is my own—the unlikely story that became Greg & Julie Eilers.

My inspiration? Why, my wife, of course! Julie and I were on one of our Saturday morning walks. I’d just finished the draft of a novel—before “Kit & Cassie,” I published three novels and two non-fiction works, including my autobiography, "A Roller Coaster Through a Hurricane"—and I was wondering what I was going to work on next. Julie asked if I’d ever thought about writing our story. I replied, “You mean, as a novel? Fictionalized?” “Right.” Three miles and nonstop chatter later, Kit and Cassie were born, along with the sketches of them that never varied when I began writing.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Kit & Cassie, what would they be?

Kit would agree with the choice for myself, Barry Manilow’s “Ready to Take a Chance Again.” When I told Julie my selection, she was on board for Cassie. Kit & Cassie, like Greg & Julie, are the very picture of chance takers, not only in how we two couples plunged into our relationships, but also the way in which we did so.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love non-fiction history, both biographies, and topics. For fiction, I cut my teeth on loads of Grisham, Cussler, Coban, and the like. When it comes to writing, though, I gravitate toward relationships and life situations. Life is filled with laughter and tears, sorrows and joys, hopes and fears. I’ve been a people watcher since I was young, and now I love crafting the situations and relationships that elicit every emotion and reaction we experience. When readers tell me I made them laugh out loud or shed tears, and they couldn’t put my book down, man oh man am I ever fulfilled.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

If this were ten years ago, it would be Grisham and Cussler and Coban, and my pile would cover a shelf! Right now, the pile’s been depleted. I’m sixty-six, and have too many stories I want to tell, so I’m busy writing. When I’m not doing that, my time is occupied with jogging, gardening, cooking, and streaming my fave shows.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Answering this is like trying to tell you which of my children I love most…

Okay, I got it. Cassie and Kit are finally in each other’s presence. Kit has shown Cassie his house, they’ve had lunch, and now they sit on the couch. In an email, Kit had told Cassie that if she could look into his eyes she would see his soul. Now, he says, “Look into my eyes, Cassie. Can you see into my soul?” Cassie finds herself overwhelmed—that this is the pinnacle of all they’d experienced since sharing their first letters (snail mail: it’s 1998). She nods and says, “I can, Kit. Everything you promised is there. I see friendship and hope. I see strength and lightheartedness. I see trust and love.”

Also in an email, those were the attributes I’d promised Julie she would see in me, when she’d written that she trusted me despite not being able to look into my eyes. When Julie and I finally came together, everything was there. It still is.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Considering what a quirky chap I am, it’s odd that I do not. When I write, I have Spotify playing in the background as I sit at my desktop in my home office.

Hmm, desktop, not laptop, and home office, not Starbucks. Maybe, that’s my quirk!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I live by the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want them to treat you. It’s my goal to love and respect all people. Also, I long ago realized this: I take my work seriously, but I don’t take myself too seriously. No one makes fun of Greg Eilers more than Greg Eilers!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

“That Eilers is an outstanding storyteller! Now, to check out the rest of his books!”

Seriously, after reading "Kit & Cassie," I desire folks to be able to grasp hope. It was hope that fueled my Julie and me, which allowed us to take a chance again—even the crazy one we took, allowing ourselves to fall in love without ever seeing each other’s photo—that has paid off in our both enjoying a second marriage that, 22 years into it, has us still crazy about each other. Keep the hope, friends, so that you don’t stop taking chances in matters that might change your lives for the better.

Interview with Christa Polkinhorn, Author of Letter from a Cave

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Letter from a Cave?

First, I happened to come across some articles dealing with the plight of refugees fleeing Italy for Switzerland during World War II, which touched me deeply. I also wanted to bring a few of the characters from my two trilogies (The Wine Lover’s Daughter and Family Portrait) together. The result was Letter from a Cave.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Letter from a Cave, what would they be?

The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Mysteries and Literary Fiction. Yes, I write in both genres, actually across genres.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm rereading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. I'm also waiting for the next book in the Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where the protagonist finds the letter in the cave in the Swiss mountains.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to have a cup of excellent coffee next to me. Chocolate chip cookies also help.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Carpe diem: Live in the moment, be grateful.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I just want them to enjoy the book.

Interview with TG Reid, Author of The DCI Bone Collection

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The DCI Bone Collection?

This collection includes the first three books in the bestselling DCI Bone British detective mystery series. My central character, DCI Duncan Bone was inspired by a dream I had about a police officer being blown up by a suspect and then being haunted by the PTSD-invoked ghost of his attacker. As you can see, I read and watch a lot of crime and it feeds my dreams!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The DCI Bone Collection, what would they be?

DCI Bone is a massive fan of Billie Holiday so I think his main theme song might be something like her song, All of You which, ironically, recounts the complete possession of one person over another, as Bone’s hallucinatory ghostly visitor tries to do to him in books 1 and 2. He’s also partial to some cheesy seventies songs, mainly to annoy his second, DI Rhona Walker.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

When I’m writing (which is most of the time) I find I have to avoid reading crime fiction as it can over-influence my style, plotting, and so on. But I love watching TV and film crime dramas and also true crime shows. They help to maintain my visual eye, which is so important when writing crime fiction. I try to make my books as visual and visceral as possible and run like a TV drama.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

In between writing I'm reading crime books by Rhys Dylan. But he writes so fast I'm always falling behind.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I love writing the irreverent interactions between detective Mullens and his father. They make me laugh out loud. However, there is one scene in book 3 involving a portable toilet and a cleaning pump that I’m particularly proud of. If pride is the right word considering what happens! I won't say any more. You’ll just have to read to find out.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I seem to write better and faster when my trusty PA, lily my cat, accompanies me in my writing shed. I say accompany but mostly lies asleep on the comfy chair, until hunger or boredom gets the better of her and she lies across my keyboard.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My motto is - don’t live by mottos.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I just want readers to enjoy my stories, engage with my characters as much as possible, and want to read the next, and the next.
