Interview with Scott Douglas Prill, Author of Where the Corn Grows Tallest

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Where the Corn Grows Tallest?

The book was inspired in part by an actual event. In about 1930, a distant relative disappeared in a rural Iowa town (where I was born) and was never seen or heard from again. I also wanted to write a story in a different genre – from ancient historical fiction to a more modern (1970) mystery/murder novel.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Where the Corn Grows Tallest, what would they be?

The novel takes place primarily in 1970, so several songs from that time period come to mind for characters in the book. A song that pertains to the young protagonist and the Vietnam War veteran is Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Another song is the first song the young protagonist hears at his initial high school dance, Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones. A third song relates to the situation of the troubled detective protagonist, Comes a Time by Neil Young.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I enjoy reading diverse range of genres including, historical fiction, murder/mysteries, and current biographies/autobiographies. I have written historical fiction books and a murder mystery book. I enjoy writing in both genres. I have thought of writing a horror novel, but in the end, I prefer the other genres noted above.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I have a diverse group of books “to be read.” These include: One by One by Ruth Ware (murder/mystery); Alaric the Goth by Douglas Boin (historical); My Two Elaines by Martin Schreiber (Alzheimer’s account); and Death on the Prairie by Paul Wellman (Indian Wars in the American West).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I enjoyed writing so many scenes in Where the Corn Grows Tallest and can’t select just one scene. Some of my favorites are: in the first chapter when a businessman disappears and is never seen again; when the Vietnam War veteran meets the young protagonist’s friends; the barn scene where the young protagonist roughly encounters the town curmudgeon; when a farm couple discovers something extremely unpleasant in their well, and the climatic chapter where the detective protagonist faces off against a murderer.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

One quirky writing habit I have is that I only write for one hour at a time. When editing I may go an hour and a half. I feel my creativity diminishes after an hour to hour and a half. But I do try and write every day. Also, for whatever reason, I tend to work more productively in the evening.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

A saying that I’m fond of was from my father-in-law: “Step by step one goes far.” This saying applies to many aspects of our lives, including writing books. What seems like a mountain when beginning a book becomes more manageable as you work on it - step by step. Other formidable challenges can be faced in the same manner.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

One thing I would like readers to remember after finishing the book is really not about the story; instead it is this - one is never too old to start something new. I started writing books and short stories at age 60. I wrote Where the Corn Grows Tallest from age 68 – 71. You’re never too old!

Interview with Kate Karyus Quinn, Author of Powers of the Zodiac Boxset

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Powers of the Zodiac Boxset?

These books are set in the same world as other urban fantasies that the three of us have written together. We call it the Mythverse. We started with a young adult academy series and then from there we moved onto adult urban fantasy - Down & Dirty Supernatural Cleaning Services. Paige, the main character in those books, is in her 30s. With the Zodiac books, we wanted to write about midlife women because the three of us are in that age group and we knew we could really dig into 40 something characters and have a lot of fun with it.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Powers of the Zodiac Boxset, what would they be?

Well, this is a book about three women who all find out that their husband was cheating on them. So they would totally have fun doing karaoke to Your Cheating Heart.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Oh wow, between the three of us, we read everything. But for writing, we just love urban fantasy with a whole lot of romance included.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

For Kate, she's been reading a lot of Ilona Andrews lately. Marley Lynn has been digging into Joe Hill. And Demitria is reading middle grade horror books.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

We love to write the scenes where our hero and heroine first meet. I don't know if they would qualify as meet-cutes. In fact, when Crystal (the heroine of the 3rd book) first sees her love interest, he's totally naked.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Kate swears by chapstick and tissues (for her constantly runny nose). Marley Lynn is a cat lady. And Demitria has 3 adorable doggos.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Umm..."There's no such thing as writer's block"? Does that count?

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Yes! Pick up the Down & Dirty Supernatural Cleaning Services. It's a 7 book series and readers love it!

Interview with Alexandra Fleder, Author of Woman Unbroken

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Woman Unbroken?

I wrote this book after escaping from a relationship that left me feeling very shaken. I was lucky—I had the foresight to extricate myself from the situation pretty quickly, but the experience felt like it was stuck inside me, like it had settled in my bones. I could see how a woman could be trapped by a relationship like this, and how it could destroy her. I started writing Woman Unbroken as a way to banish that experience from by body.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Woman Unbroken, what would they be?

For Devorah, the main character, it’s “Roll with It” by Steve Winwood. I even reference it in my book because life hands us lots of obstacles and all we can do it is “roll with it” to get to the other side.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genres to read are any books written by women—fiction, poetry, short stories and memoirs. My favorite genre to write is fiction. Other than writing poetry and short essays, fiction feels the most natural to me for right now, but that may change in time.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I have about four books that I’m halfway through but when I’m done with those, the next on my list is If Women Rose Rooted: The Power of the Celtic Woman by Sharon Blackie. It sounds like the kind of book I’d love!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The end! It was the hardest to write. I wrote this book in 2018, but couldn’t figure out how to end it, so it just sat on my computer and languished for a few years. Finally, I got up the courage to send it to an editor who confirmed that the end I had wasn’t effective. So, I sat with that thought for a few weeks and when I sat down to re-write it, it just flowed through me so easily and effortlessly. Now it’s my favorite part!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Just like Devorah, the main character, I always need to have a cup of hot tea nearby, and of course, my cat. Back when I wrote this, it was my female cat Koto. She was always by my side and I credit her with getting me through some very hard moments in my life. Now it’s my blind cat Ray Charles. He’s sitting next to me now.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

A cup of tea and a walk solves a lot of problems.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I think women, particularly young women, can be so desperate to be in a relationship that they’ll ignore a hundred red flags, and unwittingly find themselves with a narcissist. I want women to remember that it’s a million times better to be single than to be embroiled in this kind of toxic relationship. I want women to ask themselves how they feel when they meet someone new. Do you feel calm and grounded? Or anxious? Or how do you feel about the relationship you’re in now (if you have one)?

A lot of us lie to ourselves, we get wrapped up in the mind, but your body is incapable of lying. If you feel anxious or depleted, or if you feel like your relationship is laced with confusion or chaos, don’t walk, but RUN away and save yourself.

Interview with Avalon O'Clair, Author of Knights of Orion Citadel

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Knights of Orion Citadel?

I’ve always been an avid reader. I was one of those kids who would be under the blanket with a flashlight reading long after my mom tucked me in and turned off the lights. In my heart of hearts, I always wanted to be a writer. I remember walking around the neighborhood as a kid and narrating my thoughts and action in my head as if I were enacting a story. I gave it a shot once or twice, but then “life” got in the way: a demanding day job, husband, two sons, one with autism (a challenge only another parent with an autistic child can truly understand), and a household to run.

I was inspired to write this series because of my love for urban fantasy TV shows, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, and SUPERNATURAL. But I found it difficult to identify with many of the urban fantasy books I saw that seemed to me (mostly YA) to have a ridiculously powerful young female protagonist who could do anything and do it better than any full-grown man twice her size. There’s a reason Rey from Disney’s Star Wars and Captain Marvel are generally regarded as unlikable “Mary Sue’s”. They’re overpowered and had to achieve little to nothing for their power. So, I set out to write a truly adult Urban fantasy series with a more realistic tone and an ensemble cast. Yes, my female protagonist can kick ass, but she earned it with a black belt in karate. My male protagonists are well-trained knights, large and powerful men, and are never shown up or made to look inept by Emma’s skills and talents. They complement each other.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genres to read are romance and urban fantasy. I tried to get into reading Epic Fantasy, but I guess I’m just too centered in reality to buy into dragons, and I absolutely detest politics. My eyes get glazed over when you start talking about court intrigue and political machinations. Not my thing! And when one needs a glossary of terms and a map to follow the story...I simply don’t have the time or patience. I have little time to read, and when I do, the story needs to hit the ground running, or I’m gone.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

In my TBR pile, sadly neglected at this point as I am still working a full-time job and writing from 2am until 9am every day on top of that, are the last few books of The Dresden Files. Harry, I’m coming back to you, eventually.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The favorite scene in Illusion of Safety for me to write had to be when Emma first woke up in the citadel. We really get to see what Chase is made of as he draws her back to reality and does all he can to make her smile. It was fun to play with elements from one of my favorite movies, The Princess Bride, which continues throughout their story.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My writing habits? Coffee, lots of coffee; two cats sleeping on the chair in my office; a small TV screen next to my computer monitor with a YouTube living-art exterior scene playing, depending on the season. Right now through this virtual window, I’m sitting lakeside while autumn leaves fall and a glorious sunset gleams off the water. A writer’s window on the world, I guess.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My motto and philosophies are simple enough: write every day, NO social media, and keep to the ancient stoic philosophies of Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus. I highly recommend checking out The Stoic Community videos on YouTube. Great tools for life management!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If I had to choose one thing I would like readers to remember after reading my book(s), it would be that love is the most important thing: love of family, friends, and that one special person who makes your life complete, but self-love as well: knowing who you are and living with personal integrity. After all, YOU have to live with YOU every day of your life.

Interview with AK Nevermore, Author of Flame & Shadow

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Flame & Shadow?

I got to the point where writing felt formulaic and it was sucking the life out of my projects. This book was me letting loose and recapturing the joy of writing.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Flame & Shadow, what would they be?

Three Day's Grace, You against Me, and Burn with Me by Lilith Czar. Not telling you who's who.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Science Fiction and Fantasy everything. I'm also a huge fan of Dark Romance, and yeah, I write all of the above.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The latest Kim Harrison and Ilona Andrews installments along with about seventy others I keep telling myself I'll get to.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I really loved writing the swamp squid scene because it was just so ridiculous, and anything with Envy and Morgana. The frenemy factor is fierce.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I can't write at a desk. I have to be sitting somewhere soft with my feet up. Cat is optional, although he doesn't think so.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

To do what scares you. 90% of the time all that fear comes down to the not knowing— So go find out!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I really hope it makes them laugh. It was a fun book to write, and I wanted it to be just as fun to read.
