Interview with Dr. Melissa Dymond, Author of Holiday Star
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Holiday Star?
I was reading an article about a man who does TV documentaries. It mentioned that he was the cousin of a famous American celebrity. That got me thinking about all of the stars and how they often come from non-famous families. I pictured what their Christmas must look like. I thought about how strange it must be to say, “Aunt Jennifer Anniston is coming over,” but for them, it’s not weird because that’s their family member. That scenario turned into my Christmas celebrity romance novel, Holiday Star.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Holiday Star, what would they be?
Dandelion by Ruth B.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love to read and write romance with lots of swoon.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
All Rhodes Lead Here by Mariana Zapata.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I loved writing the scene where Caleb kisses Gwen for the first time because it’s when he finally steps up and claims his feelings for her.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
My motto is no reader left behind. This is why I wrote two versions of my book. I have a spicy version with explicit language and sex scenes and a sweet version with no language and kissing only. I want ALL of my readers to feel comfortable.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I want readers to remember that it’s ok to be perfectly imperfect. That even when people seem flawless from the outside, like Caleb being a famous movie star, we are all struggling on the inside. We are all striving to be the best version of ourselves and a good relationship is one where your partner helps you grow into the person you want to be. This is what Gwen and Caleb do for each other.

How Not to Fall in Love by Rebecca Leigh
How Not to Fall in Love: From the Characters of A Duke Is Always Dangerous Viewpoint
How to Keep a Vexing Female Safe from an Assassin Without Losing Your Heart
By: Camden Davenport, Duke of Stafford
- Never give up your room at an overcrowded inn after looking into her pleading eyes no matter how beautiful the lady or how it makes you feel when she smiles at you.
- No matter what, don’t rescue the lady after she is caught eavesdropping and overhears a dangerous plot, even if the plot is against you and she climbs out of a window, risking her own life to warn you.
- When fleeing from a would-be killer in the middle of the night, don’t ever pull her close enough to feel her heart beating against you.
- Don’t ever take her into your arms to keep her warm, no matter how much her teeth chatter.
- Never allow your body to react to the feel of her soft skin or to the sweet smell of lavender that lingers around her. It will just make things more difficult when you must let her go.
- Don’t get jealous of every man that looks in her direction. It could lead to you doing things that are completely out of character, such as hiding in the bushes to spy on her.
- Most importantly, don’t ever decide to take her and make her yours. It will lead to a lifetime of bad decisions and will result in you doing anything and everything to keep her safe. Because you will discover that you can’t live without her.
How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Dangerous Duke Who Is Also an Ex-Spy
By: Miss Abigail Bailey
- Don’t let the sound of his voice send quivers through your body no matter how it makes you feel to be in his presence.
- Do not risk your life to save his ungrateful hide, only for him to take you on a treacherous journey across the country.
- Never accept his excuse for saving your life as a reason to long for him to hold you close.
- Never scream after bathing causing him to come once again to your rescue. Only for him to blame you for seeing much more than was proper.
- When trying to help with his investigation, don’t crash a vase over the head of his best friend who he has slated as the one man in London other than himself who is capable of keeping you safe.
- Don’t believe him when he tells you that you belong to him only to leave London for months, making you wonder if he is still alive.
- Finally, never allow your heart to love him so much that you will do everything to save his life so that you can have the future together that you have always wanted.
For my newest release, A Duke is Always Dangerous, the main hero was a recurring character in previous books in the series. When Camden Davenport first appeared as the dangerous spy that stole Catherine the Duchess of Leicester away for one last adventure in A Duke Always Has a Secret, I had no plans for him to appear again, but there was something about him that I liked, something that made me, as well as the readers, want to see more of him. He was dangerous, roguish, handsome, somewhat arrogant, and brazen man with a dark past. What wasn’t to love? Throughout the series, Cam made his way into the lives of the other characters, and I felt it was time for his own story to be told.
I have always felt that everyone needs that one outlet to serve as an escape from the day-to-day routines of life. Many pastimes allow people those opportunities. For me, writing has always been the diversion I needed to get away from it all. Books allow readers a chance to escape to another time or dimension, to be someone else for a bit, to journey into other worlds. Most of us love a good hero in the stories we read, and I for one must have a happy ever after. My favorite escapes have always been historical novels, especially the Regency period. I grew up reading my mother’s Barbara Cartland novels, tame by today’s romance standards, but they were packed with knowledge of the period. As I got older, I moved on to the spicier novels by authors such as Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Mary Balough, Tessa Dare, Scarlett Scott, Kathlyn Ayers, and Julia Quinn are just a few of my favorites.
My favorite romance novels have always been historical, although, I do enjoy a contemporary read from time to time. While I love to read, I also love to write my own stories. Many of which never made it out of the spiral notebooks I wrote in as a teenager.
While I have dabbled in other stories, regency romances have always held my heart and when I write, I want to create that ultimate swoon-worthy hero that makes you sigh when he says that terribly romantic phrase to the heroine he is trying to impress. Likewise, I love a heroine who can be a challenge, one that doesn’t necessarily fall at the handsome hero’s feet when he looks her way.
A Duke is Always Dangerous, I feel, has the best of both. A dashingly handsome ex-spy who will do whatever it takes to protect the lady entrusted to his charge and a lady who refuses to give in easily to his charms. I hope you enjoy Cam and Abigail’s story as much as I enjoyed creating it. Happy reading!

Interview with Michael Lynes, Author of The Red Citadel
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Red Citadel?
I was inspired to write the Isaac Alavrez series after visiting Seville in 2013. The first book in the series, Blood Libel, was based on the stories I was told about the prejudice the Jewish community faced in Europe. In particular, the idea that Jews used the blood of children in their rituals. I became fascinated by this and set it in the context of the Alvarez family who had been forced to convert to Catholicism. I wanted to explore how a family can survive in such troubled times. The Red Citadel is the third in the series and is set mainly in Granada at the height of a rebellion against King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Red Citadel, what would they be?
Devils and Dust by Bruce Springsteen: 'Fear's a powerful thing, It can turn your heart black, you can trust, It'll take your God-filled soul, And fill it with devils and dust.'
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read a lot of crime fiction, mainly modern. I've started to read more YA recently as I explore the possibilities of expanding my writing.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I'm looking forward to Michael Connelly's Resurrection Walk, Alchemy by S J Parris, and The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The scene about three quarters of the way through where the main protagonists have to convince a crowd to support them against the forces of evil. I enjoyed imagining this and building it up from a single conversation to a large scale cinematic scene. I'm sure it would look good on the big screen. Maybe one day.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Unfortunately I'm pretty boring in this respect. I have a routine where I write mainly in the morning fuelled by coffee and trying to resist a mid-morning cake.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
“Three things are necessary for the salvation of man: to know what he ought to believe; to know what he ought to desire; and to know what he ought to do.” – St. Thomas Aquinas
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Hopefulness. These books are about troubled times where governments and communities were set against each other. But they got through them and went on to better times.

Interview with Marie Bilodeau, Author of Oath Breaker
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Oath Breaker?
When I was in my twenties, I wrote the epic fantasy story that I really wanted to read—three kickass women (aged 16 to 25) coming together despite their differences to stop an evil god from being reborn. That was my first published trilogy: The Heirs of a Broken Land. I’ve always wanted to go back to that world and those characters, but waited until the rights reverted back to me, which they finally did a couple of years ago. And you can read this new trilogy without reading the first one, too, in case it calls more to you!
I’m twenty years older, now, and am again writing the story I want to read, by bringing my characters twenty years into the future. Things haven’t gone as planned, and the shadows of the battlefield are long and hard to escape…what will my three heroines do now that it seems another battle is afoot? They’re older, have taken lots of hits, and now have families of their own. Will they stand and fight again, or will they let their young adult children go off to fight the demons for them?
(spoiler alert: that’s a hard no. Ha! But the world might have different plans…) It was such a joy to return to this world and these characters, and I can’t wait for (many!) more stories!
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Right now I’m on a huge science-fiction and fantasy novella kick, but I love thrillers, mysteries, romance, horror (zombies!)…all the genres, and poetry, and non-fiction... Reading is my main inspiration for writing, and I can’t thank all the wonderful writers out there enough for keeping my brain happily fed!
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
‘Tis a teetering pile, as always. A few near the top: “Pluralities,” by Avi Silver, “Shattered Spirits: The Fall of Ishcairn,” by Cal Black, and “Easter Pinkerton and the Case of the Heretic Blood” by Evan May. All by amazing Canadian authors and published independently or by small presses. *swoon*
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Forced to do so (and only under duress), I think I’d have to pick the reunion between the sorceress and the warrior as my favorite scene. They were frenemies at best in the first trilogy, and it kills the warrior that she has to ask the sorceress for help…but she’s also thrilled to see her again. The two are like an old bickering couple—they’re sarcastic with each other and tell each other off, but are fiercely protective of one another. Having them reunite for the first time in so many years was, well, I’ll let you find out!
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I don’t think I have any quirky writing habits, thank you very much (types this on one of three mechanical keyboards, obviously the one for non-fic and freelance work, while drinking from favorite Monday mug and wearing shiny handwarmers for practicality and fanciness).
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I have a whole little row of “reminders to self” taped on the bottom of my monitor. The one I’m currently favoring, and try to remind myself often of, is: Be brave, be bold, be kind.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
The feeling that there is no point in life in which you can’t be the hero. That you make a difference. Especially for older women: that you are seen, and that you matter.

Interview with Kathleen Bailey, Author of Under the Cocoon Moon
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Under the Cocoon Moon?
The idea for the mystery plays with the past, present, and future themes of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. In Under the Cocoon Moon, there is a past crime that leads to a present-day murder, which will forever change Olivia’s future. The primary theme of the story is transformation. The holidays are a time when, for many, the sights, sounds, and smells of the season raise spirits and transform lives, at least for a short while. This book is a turning point in the series for Olivia as she experiences some significant shifts in her life. As the outer world is transformed by the season, Olivia’s internal life, what she wants and needs, changes as well.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Under the Cocoon Moon, what would they be?
For Olivia Penn, “Heart of a Hero” by Cathy Heller. For Olivia’s love interest, Preston Hills, “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read widely across genres, but I do prefer mysteries. I have some favorite authors who write outside the genre, and I’d read anything they’d write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Paige Shelton’s Alaska Wild Series.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The last scene was my favorite. It involves an exchange of gifts, and the series has been building to this moment for Olivia.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I don’t have any quirky writing habits. I write whenever my kitty cat gives me the okay to do so.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
You’ll never know until you try.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Where there is a will to change, there is a way. Where there is no will, there is no way.
