Interview with Kathleen Bailey, Author of Under the Cocoon Moon
08 Nov 2023
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Under the Cocoon Moon?
The idea for the mystery plays with the past, present, and future themes of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. In Under the Cocoon Moon, there is a past crime that leads to a present-day murder, which will forever change Olivia’s future. The primary theme of the story is transformation. The holidays are a time when, for many, the sights, sounds, and smells of the season raise spirits and transform lives, at least for a short while. This book is a turning point in the series for Olivia as she experiences some significant shifts in her life. As the outer world is transformed by the season, Olivia’s internal life, what she wants and needs, changes as well.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Under the Cocoon Moon, what would they be?
For Olivia Penn, “Heart of a Hero” by Cathy Heller. For Olivia’s love interest, Preston Hills, “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read widely across genres, but I do prefer mysteries. I have some favorite authors who write outside the genre, and I’d read anything they’d write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Paige Shelton’s Alaska Wild Series.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The last scene was my favorite. It involves an exchange of gifts, and the series has been building to this moment for Olivia.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I don’t have any quirky writing habits. I write whenever my kitty cat gives me the okay to do so.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
You’ll never know until you try.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Where there is a will to change, there is a way. Where there is no will, there is no way.
