Interview with Stephanie Tyo, Author of Love Beyond Age
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Love Beyond Age (Eternally Yours) Book 1?
The book "Love Beyond Age" was inspired by the author's 17-year-old daughter and her friends. Stephanie wanted to write a story specifically for them, taking into consideration their preferences and interests in reading material. The interactions with these young individuals and their insights on what they liked to read played a pivotal role in fueling Stephanie's imagination and ultimately led to the creation of the book.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I enjoy all genres. My favorites are Horror, and Psychological Thrillers.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Currently, I am a student obtaining my BA in Psychology and Women's and Gender Studies. At the moment I'm consumed by Psychological and Feminist textbooks.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene to write was in chapters 20 through 22. The chapters resonated within my heart and soul.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I have a Pomeranian who loves to sit on my lap while I write my stories. Coco gives me great comfort when I write.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I believed in trying something once. I like to say "you can't knock it till you try it."
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
The journey of the heart is not always a smooth path, yet with time, clarity emerges.

Interview with Kate Rice, Author of Cured
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Cured?
I had to get two other books out of me in order to write this book, the book I’d wanted to write for six years. The original book was going to be about a woman getting crushed, and fighting back with spirit and humor and guts. At first it was a healing-from-an-unhappy-marriage-and-bitter divorce story. But then I got a stage four cancer diagnosis and four months to live. Now that is a deadline! I wrote this book to show how you can be in the deepest depths, in a hole so deep you think you are trapped forever, and then, you discover you can fly!
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Cured, what would they be?
Wow, so many! I am a rock 'n roll singer, you know. But here are two: I Hate Myself for Loving You, by Joan Jett—I sang this for a couple of shows at The Bitter End in New York. And then, Miss Me More by More by Kelsea Ballerini. Next time I’m on stage, I am singing that one!
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I am a closet romance fan, mainly Regency Romance and Cowboy romances! I read them every time I go to MD Anderson for the immunotherapy treatment that makes the cancer I was diagnosed with an easily managed chronic condition. I read ALL of the Bridgerton books while I was getting surgery, chemo and radiation. AND, I always am re-reading “Pride and Prejudice.” If I’m not reading romance, I’m reading history.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
1944. I started it but I have to stop every once in a while because it is tough going. But you know what? Reading it helps gives me context for all that is happening in the world today. It helps me believe that our world will survive and thrive.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My rock ’n roll debut at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, of course!
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I love libraries. They are where I go to work. All the words that surround me in the stacks power me. I wrote this book at the Park City Library and the Summit County Library. They are two gorgeous libraries near where I live in Park City, Utah. Their mountain views inspire me.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I love my scars. They show I've healed.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
There is no such thing as false hope. There is only hope.

Interview with J.S. Lark, Author of Her Last Lie
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Her Last Lie?
Like Beatrix Potter, the children’s author who created Peter Rabbit, and the 19th Century Romantic Poet, Wordsworth, I love the UK’s ‘Lake District National Park’. It’s a unique place deliberately locked in time and now recognised as a World Heritage Site. I spend a lot of time there and my psychological thriller novels seem to go back and forth in settings between the city of Bath in the area where I live in the UK to the Lake District in the north of England.
When I stay in the Lake District, I hang out mostly around the village of Near Sawrey, the town of Hawkshead, Kewsick, Derwent Water, and Esthwaite Lake. If you know these places you’ll spot similarities in my imagined settings, with towns at the feet of the mountains, and quiet picturesque lakes. The first stir of an idea for this story was wrapped around the life of a ferryman who ran a small ferry on a quieter lake, and he plays a part in the story but has slipped to a secondary character. The second inspiration came from an ice cream parlour in the town of Hawkshead, which stirred up my imagination during a ghostly walking tour on a dark evening. A family living in an ice cream parlour also have roles in the plot.
The final point that slotted the whole idea together came while I was walking around the Old Grammar School in Hawkshead. The school is so set in a moment in time it’s as though it’s slipped through a time warp. The school dates from the year 1585 and remains exactly as it was in 1783 when the poet Wordsworth attended. While walking upstairs in the school, I saw an excerpt from Wordworth’s autobiographical poem The Prelude. He wrote about a horrific moment in his school days. When he was eight years old, he found a pile of clothes beside Esthwaite Lake. He waited for the owner to come back, watching over the water. No one came. The next day a body was drawn out of the lake. My story unravelled from these threads. A pile of clothes and the unexplained death of a young man is now at the heart. A teenager’s body is found in a lake, and the impact this has on his family and particularly his younger brother and mother who are desperately trying to discover why he died.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Her Last Lie, what would they be?
I find Taylor Swift’s and Ed Sheeran’s songs inspirational, not necessarily the words in songs but the emotion of songs. So, it’s not theme songs for characters, but songs like Taylor Swift’s All You Had to Do Was Stay, Wish You Would, and Ronan, and Ed Sheeran’s, Sandman, also a song they sang together, Run, which helped me work up the right emotions for writing this story of a mother grieving and yet angry as she tries to find out who killed her son, and manage all the if I hadn’t done thoughts...
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read all sorts. Any genre. I think it’s more fun to read according to my mood, or whether I want a book to be absolutely absorbed in for a day or two, or something I can pick up and put down while I’m busy doing something else. It’s also great being part of a book club. This challenges me to read things I would not choose and discover different authors and genres. That’s why I’ve started adding book club questions in my books, because our book club is always searching for questions to generate discussion.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Steve Cavanagh’s, Kill for Me Kill for You Lucy Foley, The Book of Lost and Found Teresa F Morgan, Mistletoe at the Manor, audio book Liz Fielding, Murder Under the Mistletoe, Lizzie Lane's Her Father’s Daughter.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The scenes when the teenager’s mother fights back and takes things into her own hands to find out who killed her son.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I write at odd times, as a passenger in a car, on trains, while stopping for coffee in a café, and I can randomly write and listen to a TV show at the same time. I have to take every opportunity time allows in my busy life. If I can’t capture an idea, though, I stop writing and go for a swim. Swimming clears my mind and then the ideas usually have space to pop up.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
This is a favourite of mine — Confucius said, 'Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.' Writing fiction never feels like work. Also, I am a terrible over thinker, and I was told by someone once that most of the people he met with mental health problems were over thinkers and I should learn to ‘let things go’. So, I do try to stop thinking about things I can’t change, but I equally celebrate the over thinking skills of my mind because it’s that overactive inner voice that means I can create make believe.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
This story is as much about love as it is about loss. The lead character Jen has many different forms of relationship — with her sons, with her sons’ father and his mother, with friends and partners. We should all celebrate, and value, the love we have, and in this story as she searches for her son’s killer, Jen not only finds the murderer but also revives her relationship with her lost son.

Interview with Deborah Hawkins, Author of Unforgettable
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Unforgettable?
As an attorney, I am very much aware of the role the expert testimony plays in a trial. Early on, Raven Adair casts doubt on the soundness of expert testimony when she says that she knows people are wrongly convicted in slip and fall cases based on expert testimony. The idea of this book came to me after I watched "The Staircase" about the death of Michael Peterson's wife in North Carolina and the controversy of whether it was a homicide or an accident. I was also intrigued by the theme of infidelity, although I found it much harder to write about than I anticipated. Finally, I studied Irish literature when I was getting my Masters in English, and I wanted to bring in some Irish characters to go back to a long-time interest in Ireland and its history.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Unforgettable, what would they be?
Unforgettable sung by Nat King Cole and As Time Goes By (theme from Casablanca).
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Mystery and suspense!
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I'm afraid everything TBR is work related (sigh).
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I like writing the trial scenes in the courtroom in all of my books.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Not really.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
My word is my bond.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
The emotions they felt.

Interview with Daniel D. Bate, Author of Stepping Stones to Space
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Stepping Stones to Space?
Before I lost my eyesight, I used to stare at the night sky and imagine human beings out there among the stars. I’ve always wanted us to get back out into space and I think the first stepping stone to that is creating a colony on the moon. I’ve always wanted to write a book about people colonizing space.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Stepping Stones to Space, what would they be?
Doctor Elizabeth Reacher's theme tune would be A Spaceman Came Travelling by Chris de Burgh.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Science fiction and fantasy are the ones I like to read. I have written and published a book in science fiction, so far, and I plan on doing more in fantasy soon.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Writing the Shadow: Turn Your Inner Darkness Into Words by Joanna Penn. The Primal Hunter He who fights, and Defiance of the Fall.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favourite is the very last scene in the whole book, where they stood in the control room of the ship, the northern star, and are watching the countdown to launch.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I write through dictation because of my disabilities and do it most of the time while I’m taking my medications or something else, so I can use my time as efficiently as possible.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I have eight. One.) If it’s going to be it is up to me. Two.) Keep on keeping on. Three.) Efficiency efficiency efficiency. Four.) Slow and steady wins the race. Five.) How to eat an elephant - one bite at a time. Six.) The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. Seven.) Do what I can, where I can, how I can, and as much of it as I can. Eight.) Balance and moderation in everything.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
You can always reach for the stars, but you might not get there, however, at least you still might get to the moon.
