Interview with A.S.G., Author of The Metareverse

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Metareverse?

The realization that our society seems to be at a loss in a number of ways and perhaps a work of fiction could help us wake up a little.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Metareverse, what would they be?

Chasing cars.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Classical literature, science fiction, absurdist fiction, and satire.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Nose, Infinite Jest, and The Corrections.

When George spends time with his grandpa outside.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to write with a very special fountain pen.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Let's stop pretending and get real."

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Reality is simple and beautiful and we should never forget about it.

Interview with J.W. Jarvis, Author of The Phantom Enforcer

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Phantom Enforcer?

I wanted to create a fantasy book series that highlights realistic first responder duties and challenges. I am glad to broaden awareness of the daily lives of frontline workers and the sacrifices they make while also entertaining my readers with a suspenseful adventure story.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Phantom Enforcer, what would they be?

Emmy Hernandez (the police officer) is best characterized by Alicia Keys' Superwoman song.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Thrillers are my favorite and I am writing a Technothriller novel right now.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

1984 and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The Chicago Warehouse scene was fun because Noah finally discovers how to control one of the Phantom's powers and helps his best friend, Danielle.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

While I write on my dual monitors, I have a laptop next to me running a Birchwood fireplace video from Netflix.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"If you want to succeed, fail twice as much!"

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Police officers have stressful jobs and we should appreciate everything they do. There are also officers that make mistakes, like regular people. We should appreciate the hidden protection they provide citizens every day.

Interview with Tara Grayce, Author of Mountain of Dragons and Sacrifice

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Mountain of Dragons and Sacrifice?

This story came from the idea: What if the monster in the story didn't actually want the maiden sacrifice? The rest of the book came from there.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love romantic fantasy / fantasy romance! Especially if the books have a good dose of action and humor besides the romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Greybrow Brothers series by Shari Tapscott.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where the dragon's steward chews him out for having a messy desk.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I love to burn candles while I write. I'll often pick 2-3 candles with scents that make me think of a book's world and characters, then I'll rotate through them while writing each particular book.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Perhaps it is a bit cliche, but the truth will set you free.

Interview with Martin Parece, Author of The Oathbreaker's Daughter (The Dragonknight Trilogy Book 1)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Oathbreaker's Daughter (The Dragonknight Trilogy Book 1)?

Wow, that's a tough one. I've always loved strong female characters in fantasy, going back to Belit and Valeria in Howard’s original Conan stories, but we didn’t used to see a lot of female warrior main characters in fantasy. At least, not until recently. I wanted to write that kind of character – she’s young, fierce, strong-willed, but also unsure of herself – and she has been told her whole life she can’t be what she knows she’s meant to be. But that’s only part of it.

The genesis of this book began back in 2018, with the basic idea of what if nothing known to be “true” about the dragons in this world is accurate? What if there’s more at play? Forces at work? Power dynamics have always featured heavily in my novels (and fantasy as a whole), because there’s always people out there trying to have more. And what if the top 1% of 1%, whether they’re friends, enemies, or indifferent, work together to create a power structure that keeps them at the top? And then we have one person, a headstrong young woman who just simply will not accept societal norms and facts because they don’t coincide with her view of her destiny. This book is only the tip of that iceberg, and the next two will reveal more and more. In the end, it can be read as just a fun fantasy adventure, if that’s all someone wants.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Oathbreaker's Daughter (The Dragonknight Trilogy Book 1), what would they be?

Flight of Icarus - Iron Maiden / Lux Aeterna - Metallica / Heart of a Dragon - Dragonforce

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Read - fantasy and horror, mostly. Write - Though I've written very little of it, I'd say I enjoy writing horror the most.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

More than I can list, but to name a few... Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons, a Philip Dick short story compilation, The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward, and Conan the Gladiator by Leonard Carpenter.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Another tough one - The Battle for Portton between the Protectresses and the pirates known as "Hulgre Fratencav" came together beautifully in my head. It was fun, violent, and heroic, but also showcased inexperience and hesitation in the face of danger, something so often ignored in fantasy. Fantasy heroes tend to be people of action, rushing headlong into danger and combat, but so rarely do we see a character’s FIRST real combat with all the fear and anxiety that brings. When the dust settles, it ends with a heartwarming, touching scene between the Protectresses as they truly accept our main character as one of them. I’ll be honest – I cried after I wrote it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Does procrastination count? No? If I stray from the Word doc to the internet, I have to do a set of ten pushups or hammer curls. It's weird, I know...

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Most recently, it's "Full speed or nuthin', full speed or nuthin'!" Again, from Lux Aeterna by Metallica.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If you know you're destined for it, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Fly!

Interview with Juliette Rose Kerr, Author of To Fill A Jar With Water

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write To Fill A Jar With Water?

On numerous occasions, I’ve just been totally caught off guard by Plymouth’s beauty (the setting for the story), its history, and the warmth of the people. It’s such a unique town – you can find yourself at the sea, in a field of wildflowers, beside a cranberry bog, shopping downtown, or at a museum all within twenty minutes. I find that a little magical. So, Plymouth became the perfect setting for my book. Its history, past and present, was such fertile ground to develop a complex story. It’s definitely an homage to the places and people of my beloved and adopted hometown. I hope at the end of the day, I make them proud.

Lastly, I’m motivated to help people know they’re not alone in life, especially in difficult and uncertain times. I guess that’s why I’m a spiritual director and end-of-life doula. C.S. Lewis once wrote, “we read to know we are not alone” and I’ve always taken that to heart. I want to tell stories that touch readers in a way that they’re able to connect with their own, and others, vulnerabilities and frailties, but also their resilience and determination. So, really, it was all those elements of inspiration that kind of percolated in me when I went to write the book.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of To Fill A Jar With Water, what would they be?

"I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Contemporary fiction/Literary fiction; yes, it's my favorite genre to write too!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah, Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie, and The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I actually loved writing the ending of the book. It's some of my most beautiful imagery. I also got to tie up loose ends and bring the story full-circle. I kind of closed my laptop and felt satisfied that I had done the characters and the story justice. I'd woven together a meaningful story that I was proud of. It was just such an important moment for me. I may have shed a few tears.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Whatever scene I'm writing, I play music in the background to evoke the feelings I want to reproduce. It also helps to have George, my lab, snuggling at my feet. He keeps me warm in my cold office!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be kind because you never know what battles others are fighting.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I have a million things, but the main thing is: Life is messy, but there's always hope! And, love never ends.
