Interview with Steve Pizzolato, Author of Noah's Ark

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Noah's Ark?

Recently the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that IVF embryos are considered life. That decision has upended the IVF industry and terrified women who cannot conceive naturally, and IVF is their only hope. Now their hope may be a nightmare. The Alabama decision is foretold in my book, which I started writing in 2023 when the idea for this book came from a conversation I had with my daughter, who was going through IVF treatments.

She had successfully created ten viable embryos and was soon pregnant. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade with the Dobbs v. Jackson decision, there was some quiet talk in conservative state legislative bodies (Alabama being one) that perhaps the disposition of unused IVF embryos would be treated the same way as an abortion. Criminal prosecution of the mother, the doctor, or the clinic. She asked me, concerned, “Do you think I could be charged with murder if I chose to donate my unused embryos for medical research?”

An interesting and scary question, made more so by the ruling in Alabama, for all women, partners, and fathers. Noah’s Ark hopes to educate you and let your mind think about the possibilities of a war on IVF embryos.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Murder/Mystery and history/biographical.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

None. I was an avid reader. My mother was a librarian, but I decided that I needed to write my own books instead of reading others. I do pick up a non-fiction book once in a while, and I recently read The Wager by David Gann and Anderson Cooper's story on the Vanderbilts, but no other books are on my TBR pile.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Noah's Ark has a false ending, so the best scenes are the chapters after the primary crime is solved, but then another crime and criminal closes out the book. They are Chapters 40-43, and they answer many questions but leave the door open for the 3rd installment of the series.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, but my black cat, Finn, does like to sit on or near my keyboard when I write. I don't have a set regiment. I write when the mood strikes or I have an idea I need to get down on paper.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Listen more than you talk. Your friends will appreciate it.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We are all entitled to make our own decisions in our lives, and we should fight like hell if people want to take away our right to choose.

Interview with David A. Willson, Author of Wet, Warm and Noisy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Wet, Warm and Noisy?

This novel is about an Alaska State Trooper Investigator who is returning to work after a serious illness. Having battled cancer in 2019, I wrote much of my own experience into Jake Ward's story (except for the sci-fi aspects, that is.) While this personal struggle adds interest to the protagonist, the larger story applies to us all - a journey into the unknown of human potential.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Wet, Warm and Noisy, what would they be?

For Jake Ward, I'd pick, "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John - a testament to his resilience. For Belle Anderson, I'd pick, "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman. That song talks about dreams of a better life; the desire to escape her circumstances.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Having spent a career in law enforcement, I don't read much in the way of crime thrillers. They just don't usually come across as believable for me, unfortunately. Instead, I read speculative fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, some non-fiction and the occasional character-driven literary tale.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Some of them: "The Green Ember" by SD Smith, "If You Tell" by Gregg Olsen, "Sabriel" by Garth Nix and "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" by Heather Morris.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Ooh - that's a spoiler. I'll give a hint: it was one of the medical scenes. Loved researching the science, the medicine, and putting it all together.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I don't know if it's quirky, but I like a glass of wine when writing, coffee (for alertness) when editing, and I like to read out loud to see how something sounds after I write. Sometimes the best passages are terrible when you hear them out loud... arrrggh.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Let your yes be yes, and your no be no." I like simple things, and I hate secrets. Also, I think one should endeavor to leave every room, and every person, in a better state than when you first encounter them. I try to say something kind and maybe pick up a little trash before I go on my way.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Science doesn't have a handle on everything; there is much yet to learn. The moment you stop imagining what could be, and decide you know how things are, you've abandoned one of the best parts of being human: the wonder of it all.

Interview with Gerald Everett Jones, Author of Preacher Stalls the Second Coming

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Preacher Stalls the Second Coming?

The engine of drama in all of the Preacher Evan Wycliff mysteries is that people in his small farming community bring him problems that no one else wants to solve.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Preacher Stalls the Second Coming, what would they be?

Boogie Street (Leonard Cohen).

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Literary fiction and classics. Perhaps the best definition of great literary fiction is that it defies definition.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Leviathan (Paul Auster), State of Wonder (Ann Patchett).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

As a BookLife reviewer wrote: "A tense discussion of the Book of Revelation between Wycliff and Pastor Obadiah proves more gripping than many mysteries’ shootouts."

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

When I write fiction I no longer outline. If I can surprise myself, perhaps I can delight my readers.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I write mystery-thrillers and literary fiction for adult readers who seek insight, fascination, and delight in the adventures of their own lives.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Why do bad things happen to good people?
