Interview with J. M. Unrue, Author of Love in Words and Music

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Love in Words and Music?

I had three objectives. I wanted to write a mature love story that was funny and moving. I wanted it to be quick and easy to follow, and I wanted it to be unique.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Love in Words and Music, what would they be?

Patricia would be Hot Blooded by Foreigner and Brad would be Steady My Heart by Kari Jobe.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I don't write in any specific genre. This is my eighth book and they're all different. My favorite 'mind candy' is horror. I've never written horror and probably won't. I just enjoy it.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I've tried to explain this before but I don't read at all when I'm writing and I've been writing constantly for the past decade. Occasionally, I'll reread Koontz or King on my Kindle. I did read a very interesting book called The Five last year. It dealt with the women who were victims of Jack the Ripper. Gave them substance.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Their son's wedding scene. It's hysterical.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write on a reclining sofa on my laptop, I'm completely relaxed when I write; I drink a lot of coffee, too.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Borrowed from Paul McCartney...'Something will happen'. It dates back to their pre-success days when they ran their old van into a ditch. It's a laid-back version of 'trust the universe'.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That these people are real. If nothing else, there isn't a dishonest line in it.

Interview with Elliot York, Author of If At First You Don't Deceive

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write If At First You Don't Deceive?

I wanted to write a thriller where the main character finds a hiding place on a remote island. I like the gothic feel of a remote island and I hope I captured that ambience in the book.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of If At First You Don't Deceive, what would they be?

My main character Everly Sutton’s theme song would be Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird”.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love romance and mystery, and a combo of both is my favorite.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m currently reading “Murder at an Irish Wedding” by Carlene O’Connor. I just finished Jane Harper’s "Dry" and loved it from start to finish.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When the main character, Everly Sutton, lands on Winborne Island for the first time and she finds this new sense of freedom… at least for a short while.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a small outside office and I always have at least one dog with me. The dogs consider it their office, too. It might be the bowl of dog treats I keep near the computer.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Always be kind to people, animals, and the planet.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Mostly I want my books to provide a nice escape from life. And if they think about the characters long after the final chapter, then that’s a bonus.

The Story Behind A Darling Aviator by Lark Holiday

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Darling Aviator?

Of all the characters in my first novel, A Darling Handyman, I definitely received the most comments about Mac—and he wasn’t even a main character! (Don’t believe me? Read the reviews!) But I am totally on the same page as my readers. Even before I finished writing that book, I knew the next story in the Darling Man series had to be Mac’s. Love him or hate him, something about a strong character makes for a great read.

Mac is who he is, no apologies, which made me feel like I was writing about a real person. That being said, I think I was as surprised as he was about the woman he ended up with! A grumpy pilot and a glamorous influencer?! Tell me more!

It was so much fun to spend time with Mac and Elle. I hope that comes through on the page, and that I was able to do their story justice. It was so fulfilling to see them finally get their happily ever after once and for all.

A Darling Aviator has everything you can expect in a Darling Men novel: more humor than heat, closed door and curse words, quirky locals, and a cute dog. But it is also a story about being brave enough to live the life you want and honoring your heart’s desires. I hope you thoroughly enjoy a return to Alaska in A Darling Aviator! Welcome back!

Interview with Helena Hunting, Author of If You Hate Me

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write If You Hate Me?

I've been writing hockey romance for a decade, and I wanted to start a new world, set in Toronto, Canada, where I'm from. It was so fun to write in Canadianisms and build a brand new team and a brand new world.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of If You Hate Me, what would they be?

Wait by NF for the hero; hate u/love u by gnash featuring Olivia O'Brien.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Romantasy all the way. Especially fae, and recently, Dragon Rider War College.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Fragile Sanctuary by Catherine Cowles; My Anti-Hero by Tijan.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The first kiss, where all the tension that's been building between them explodes.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I always need bubbly water and coffee, and a playlist in the background, and I'm happiest when my cat is sleeping on my closed laptop.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The importance of found family and showing up for yourself and the people you love.
