Interview with Carrie Stonemoore, Author of Fake Married to My Best Friend's Ex

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?

I wanted to demonstrate that the people we sometimes call our enemies because our friend or loved one had a bad outcome in a relationship with that person don't have to be that way. In this story, Laurel made Kas an enemy because he made her friend cry. Yet her friend forgave him, moved on, and Laurel found out that Kas wasn't a bad guy at all once she got the rest of the story.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be?

For Laurel: Golden by Jill Scott—It captures her bright, hopeful energy and determination to protect the neighborhood she loves. Laurel believes homes—and people—are worth fighting for.

For Kas: “Love” — Musiq Soulchild—Kas hides disappointment and vulnerability behind charm, teasing, and confidence. This song fits his gradual realization that love requires honesty, courage, and staying when things become difficult.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading and writing sweet romance. It deals with the reality of romantic relationships. I had a successful marriage for 30 years, which helped me understand that there are many positive outcomes if you can get past the undesirable stuff.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Right now, I am reading a lot of autobiographies. Cicely Tyson is the most recent.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene is the first chapter, where The Cat gets into the trailer and causes Laurel and Kas to collide. It makes me laugh every time I think about it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Shelled unsalted pistachios and herbal tea. Right now, my tea flavor is mango ginger, sometimes hot and sometimes cold. Peeling the pistachios helps me focus, and of course the nuts make me thirsty.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Appreciate the other person's perspective. You don't have to like it or agree with it. If you traveled their same life path, you might see things their way too. So, give them grace.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Learning to get along will make it more enjoyable. So, don’t sweat the small stuff.
