Interview with Stephanie Diaz, author of Evolution

Tell us a little bit about your new release, EVOLUTION.

EVOLUTION is the third book in my YA sci-fi series, so it picks up right where REBELLION left off. An alien race has sent warships to the planet Kiel seeking total annihilation of its inhabitants, in revenge for an age-old quarrel with the Kielan government. Clementine and her crew of rebel friends must forge unexpected alliances and uncover the truth behind all the secrets they’ve been told in order to have a chance at surviving.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

When it comes to writing, “follow your gut” is the best advice I’ve been given. If a scene doesn’t sit quite right with me, usually something about it needs to change. I think the advice rings true in real life, too.

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

The Harry Potter series, of course. I’m also quite fond of His Dark Materials and Mary Shelley’s Merlin series, which begins with The Crystal Cave.

Say you're the host of a talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

It’s so hard to pick just one person! But I would love to interview J.K. Rowling and ask her how much the plot of the Harry Potter series shifted from her original idea over the course of the years she spent writing.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

People who make me laugh and books that make me feel exceptional things.

Who are your literary heroes?

Samwise Gamgee, Hermione Granger, and Lucy Pevensie, to name a few.

What's your favorite quote or scene from EVOLUTION?

“‘I love you,’ I say. No matter what happens, no one can take that from me.”
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Ad astra per aspera, which is Latin for “To the stars through difficulty.” It always gives me hope.

Interview with Tess Gerritsen, Author of Playing with Fire

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Playing with Fire.

Julia is a violinist who buys a mysterious handwritten waltz, "Incendio," from a Rome antique store. Every time she plays it, her three-year-old daughter becomes violent. To save her family -- and perhaps her own sanity -- Julia must find the origins of this music. Her search takes her to Italy, where she learns of a tragic love story and a dark time in Italian history.

What is the one movie you can quote the most?

"Galaxy Quest." It's a SF-comedy that I watch whenever I need to laugh. "Never give up, never surrender!" is my favorite line from the movie.

What's rocking your world this month?

"Incendio," the music I composed for my book, is about to be released on ITunes. It's my first time as a published composer, and I'm finding it all pretty cool!

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

Italy. The food, the history, the people, the language -- I could explore it for several lifetimes.

Tell us about Incendio, the music that inspired Playing with Fire.

When I first wrote about it, it was a purely fictional piece of music. In the story, "Incendio" is like an echo from the past, connecting my heroine Julia with the tragic story of the composer, Lorenzo. While writing the book, I described the piece in great detail, how it starts off as a mournful melody, how it becomes more and more disturbing. Somehow, my subconscious absorbed all those descriptions because one morning, I woke up with the melody itself in my head. I composed the entire 98-bar piece in about 6 weeks. It's been recorded by concert violinist Yi-Jia Susanne Hou, and is available on iTunes as the theme music to Playing with Fire.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A writer. I've wanted to be a writer since I was seven years old.

How did you make the transition from M.D. to full-time writer?

While on maternity leave for my first child, I started writing in earnest. After winning a major writing contest, I realized that I might actually have a future as a writer. A few years later, I sold my first novel, and a few novels later, I left medicine for good. I suppose it's fair to say that I owe my writing career to my children!

What's your favorite quote or scene from Playing with Fire?

It comes from my historical notes at the end of the book. "These are the people I wanted to honor in Playing with Fire, these ordinary men and women whose quiet acts of humanity and sacrifice give us all hope. Even in the darkest of times, there will always be a Laura to light the way."

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Stay curious.

Interview with Rebecca Chastain, author of A Fistful of Fire

Tell us a little bit about your new release, A Fistful of Fire.

Madison Fox can see souls—and the evil creatures that feed off them. In fact, her job as illuminant enforcer is to eradicate all manner of these evil beings, from the smallest chinchilla-like fluff ball of evil to monstrous and deadly demons. Up until a week ago, Madison had no clue what she was doing, and while she’s impressed with herself for surviving long enough to cash her first paycheck, she hasn’t impressed anyone else. Now Madison’s region is the epicenter of a multi-regional flare-up of evil that includes fire-breathing salamanders, and she needs to become an enforcer extraordinaire overnight . . . or watch her region go up in flames.

A Fistful of Fire is the second in my bestselling urban fantasy series.

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

I’m always trying to improve my stories and my ability to tell them, so I keep a very earmarked copy of Christopher Vogler’s The Writer’s Journey on a shelf beside my desk alongside Brian McDonald’s Invisible Ink. Every time I read these books, I learn more, and they’re great for inspiring ideas to smooth kinks out of plots.

For the love of the stories (and for what I learn from these amazing authors), I enjoy rereading all my favorite fantasy authors, including Ilona Andrews, Kim Harrison, Jacqueline Carey, and Robert Jordan. Also, do comic books count? I reread my entire Bill Amend and Bill Watterson collection yearly.

What's rocking your world this month?

I’m coming late to party, but I recently found Patricia Briggs and have been galloping through her Mercy Thompson books.

What's something you're truly terrible at doing?

Timed jumping in video games. I’ve been playing games since the first NES system was released, but you wouldn’t know it by watching me play.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

I’d fill the seats at my table with women of Tenochtitlan from around 1490. I’d want to chat with women of every station, city dwellers and those living more rurally. The history books seem to go out of their way to not mention these Native American women, and I’m fascinated by what their daily lives were like before European explorers/conquerors arrived. Plus, I’m working on resurrecting the Aztec in an alternate history fantasy novel, and it’d be invaluable to have personal insight from the women who lived there.

What's on your writing desk?

A novella manuscript
Two handwritten timelines for novels in the works
A dozen sticky notes with random story and character ideas
Marketing plans
O’Keeffe’s Working Hands hand cream
A pocket microscope
A photo of my handsome husband
A tiny glass elephant purchased when I first started writing Tiny Glitches
My much-loved and nail-gouged ergonomic keyboard

What's your favorite quote or scene from A Fistful of Fire?

One of my favorite scenes is when Madison learns what the mystery energy in the parking garage is—and has to face the consequences. Here’s a quote from that scene:

“Nerves made me giddy, and darting around singing “Eye of the Tiger” wasn’t going to win me any points with my fellow enforcers. Plus, who was in charge of my inner sound track? It obviously wasn’t me.”

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Not really, but I keep two notes on my monitor to remind me how I want to live:

“Everything is a gift.”
“Life is meant to be fun.”

Interview with Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz, Author of Dr. Mütter's Marvels

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Dr. Mütter's Marvels.

Dr. Mütter's Marvels is the true story of Dr Thomas Dent Mütter, founder of Philadelphia’s (in)famous Mütter Museum – a museum of 19th century medical oddities. Mütter was a brilliant and humanist doctor, who specialized in reconstructive surgery on the severely deformed in a time before anesthesia (so all of his patients were awake during his procedures), and was huge force in revolutionizing American medicine as we know it today.

You're hosting a dinner party and can invite anyone- alive or dead, fictional or real. Who's coming to dinner?

I would invited Mütter and wife Mary – after researching them both so much, it would be incredible to meet them – and I would also invite two other famous Pennsylvanians: Benjamin Franklin, whom I’ve loved since I was a kid, and President James Buchanan, who was America’s first gay president, although I’m not sure why that isn’t more public knowledge. In any case, I would love to share with President Buchanan all the amazing advancements that have happened with gay rights right here in America and around the world!

Where is your favorite place you've spent time as an artist-in-residence?

I loved my time in Australia. It’s such an amazing country: friendly, huge and beautiful. It’s a beast of a flight to get down there but so worth it. Oh, and the Australian poetry scene is fantastic too! Breathtakingly smart and funny!

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Empathy beams. It would allow me to take two people in conflict, and shoot them both with empathy beams that would allow them to open up to the other’s opinions and perspectives more. But since I don’t have that power (YET), I spend a lot of time encourage people to truly listen to one another. It’s amazing how much change can happen if you just listen.

Tell us about your most recent poetry slam!

Oh, the last poetry slam I attended was the NYC Urbana Poetry Slam in New York City. It is the same slam that I started in 1998 when I was a 19-year-old NYU student. It is thrilling to see it flush with young people who are falling in love with poetry the same way over a decade and a half earlier!

Who was your childhood hero?

My mother. She is the reason I am a writer today.

What prompted your shift from poetry to the genre of non-fiction (featured in Dr. Mütter's Marvels)?

I’ve been a life-long lover of nonfiction. My mother was a devoted nonfiction reader too, so I likely developed that love from her. When I was twenty-four, I was asked by Soft Skull Press to help write a history of the American Poetry Slam movement. That book would eventually become Words In Your Face, my first nonfiction book, and I was hooked.

What's your favorite quote or scene from Dr. Mütter's Marvels?

One of my favorite Mütter quotes didn’t make it in the book: Come forth to charm, enlighten and dazzle the world!

Mütter would say that to his students, and I think it’s beautiful!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

It’s Okay. I’ve had a little flag that says that that has hung over numerous desks of mine for years. When I get frustrated, I often lean back in my chair, and that little sign has met my gaze hundreds of times. It’s simple but comforting, and more often than not, true.
