Interview with T.R. Richmond, Author of What She Left

Tell us a little bit about your new release, What She Left.
It’s the story of a young woman who drowns on a night out with friends – and an academic then pieces together her life and the mystery surrounding her death through her paper and digital trail. I wanted to write a traditional “suspense” story, but make it reflect how we communicate these days, so it features snippets of information from different sources, rather than having one single narrative viewpoint. As well as letting me write about love and lust and secrets and obsession (such things never go out of fashion, right?), this meant I could explore contemporary issues, such as the media, the online world and the digital “footprint” any of us leave.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always been preoccupied by capturing detail – whether that was keeping a diary as a kid or taking photographs. Maybe it’s because memory is fickle, but I’ve always worried about “losing” the past. My desire to write was born out of the same sentiment – it’s partly about helping me remember. It’s also about wanting to start a dialogue with readers. When you publish a book, you’re saying to people: ‘This is how I see the world, what do you think?’

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. I was a student doing a summer job in London when I read it. I’d got off a bus, was late for work and about 30 pages from the end, but just stood by the side of the road outside the office and carried on reading. I simply had to finish it. My boss even walked past me at one point and asked me if I was alright! If ever I need reminding of the power of books, I think of that moment..

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

I love being in the company of people I’ve known for a long time – people who know about the best things I’ve done and the worst things I’ve done and are still there for me. Just being in the same room as friends I’ve known for, say, 25 years, gives me a deep sense of joy, calm and excitement.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

I’m a TV box-set addict, particularly US shows. I loved The Wire, House of Cards, Mad Men and Homeland. I also thought The Affair was stunning; the way it played with perspective was fascinating and there was a scene in Season 1 where Cole Lockhart had a heart-to-heart on a city sidewalk with Alison which was just heartbreaking. My current indulgence is Breaking Bad, which pretty much everyone else seems to have watched. It’s an incredibly brave bit of TV – not just in terms of the subject matter, but because the main character does such terrible things. It also can shift genre, virtually on a scene-to-scene basis, leaving you unsure what exactly you’re watching. It’s utterly compelling, though.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

My younger self. Not because that person would be good company – they’d probably be boring, introspective and naïve – but I’d tell my younger self to relax, enjoy life more and take more risks.

What's your favorite quote or scene from What She Left?

Rather than my favourite, can I tell you about a bit I particularly remember writing please? It’s a scene where Alice Salmon has a weekend away by the seaside town with her boyfriend. Often, writing can be a slow process but occasionally, just occasionally, you find yourself totally immersed in the fictional world you’re creating. After I’d finished that session at my computer, I headed into my local town. It’s only two miles away and I’ve made that journey hundreds of times, but I got lost. I left the house and intended to get the train, but walked in the wrong direction for the train station. So I decided to get on a bus, but I got on the wrong one. I then even managed to get off at the wrong stop! The only excuse I can make for such ridiculous behaviour was that I was still in my characters’ heads and hadn’t recalibrated myself to reality.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I could be worthy and say something like “do unto others as you would they do to you”, but the things I believe in tend to be more practical.
I believe in the benefits of work. OK, that might be easy for me to say because I’m lucky and do a job I love and I might not say that if I was working 16 hours a days in a job I hated, but work does give us a sense of purpose, a feeling of achievement and helps define our place in the world. I also believe in loyalty and, if someone’s good to you, you shouldn’t ever forget that. And here’s one thing I don’t believe in – “luck”. Luck is merely a coming together of your efforts and circumstances, so is largely within your own control...

Interview with Susan Perabo, Author of Why They Run the Way They Do

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Why They Run the Way They Do.
“Why They Run the Way They Do” is a collection of short stories. Because “linked” stories are so popular these days, people often ask me how the stories are connected. This is a question I struggle to answer, but I can say this: All these stories are about people, except for the ones that are secretly about dogs; all these stories are about real life situations, except for the ones that are secretly about pretend life situations; all these stories include at least one emotion; all these stories are set on earth; all these stories contain all the vowels, including y.

What books are currently on your night stand?

Edwidge Danticat’s Untwine, Elizabeth Strout’s My Name is Lucy Barton, Lucia Berlin’s A Manual for Cleaning Women.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

I like old Superman and Batman comics. I also read Archie Double Digest more than you might think.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest?

Disregarding death, I’d invite John Williams, my old teacher, and ask him to read “The Dead” aloud. Best hour ever.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

I like sitting on warm bleachers watching a little league baseball game. If the sun in shining and I have a coke, I could sit there all day. I love watching kids play baseball, even if they’re not my own kids. I love being warmed by the sun, even if it’s shining in my face and I have to put my hand above my eyes to see the batter. I love the sound of bat on ball, the smell of hot dogs, and the warm gust of wind that blows a cloud of infield dirt into the outfield. On a few occasions I have actually drifted off at a baseball game, not because I’m bored, but because I’m so relaxed. If the bleachers are not warm, it’s no longer my happy place. The warm bleacher is the essential ingredient in the above scene.

Of all the stories you've written, which one is your favorite?

Usually the story I’ve written most recently is my favorite. But I can say, looking over the collection as a whole now, that probably “Indulgence” is the one I like best.

What's your favorite quote or scene from Why They Run The Way They Do?

Writing the end of “Indulgence” felt like getting on the highway and accelerating to 150 miles per hour, and feeling complete control over the speeding car, and having no fear of being killed or arrested. The ends of “Michael the Armadillo” and “Treasure” felt similarly.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I really try to remember to be grateful.

Interview with Laura J. Burns and Melinda Metz, authors of Sanctuary Bay

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Sanctuary Bay.
With Sanctuary Bay we threw some of our favorite story elements (elite prep schools, secret societies, bad boys, great friends) and some of our favorite genres (suspense, romance, sci-fi) into our brain blender. We hope we came up with a wild ride that will keep readers guessing.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

MM: I’ve been a reader as long as I can remember, and being a reader is what led me first to a career as an editor (where I could read as a job) and then to becoming a writer.

LJB: What she said! It’s pretty much the same story for me.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

MM: Those moments where everything is clicking and I can write without pausing. The ones where I sit and stare at the computer screen are more common, so I really appreciate the ones where the writing flows.

LJB: My favorite thing about writing is reading what I’ve written! The process itself is hard, so I like the feeling of accomplishment I get when it’s done and I have something to show for it.

What's your favorite thing about writing a book alongside another author?

We were friends before we became writing partners, and writing gives us an excuse to spend hours talking on the phone and call it work. It makes the whole process more fun. And it’s also easier--two brains really do make a difference when you’re trying to work out a plot snag or develop a character. We’ve both worked as editors (we met working at the same company), so by teaming up, we each gain an editor as well as a co-author.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

MM: Lounging around reading, binge-watching a TV series, or having a movie marathon.

LJB: Sleeping!

Say you now host a literary-themed talk show (congrats). Who would be your first guest? What would you ask that person?

Since there are two of us, we’d like to have two guests. And since we often write weird stuff, we don’t care that one of them is dead. We’d like to sit down with Jane Austen (Laura had a cat named Pemberley) and Stephen King (Melinda saw “Carrie: The Musical”) and just see what they’d have to say to each other. We think they’d really hit it off.

What scene in Sanctuary Bay was your favorite to write?

Really all of the scenes between Ethan and Sarah—we like the way they verbally spar. Also the scene where Nate tells Sarah to get the chip off her shoulder. We have others, but they’re huge spoilers!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

IMM: Not that I live by, but that I write by. Laura has said “First Draft!” to me so many times when I’m agonizing over whether something is working or not, that it is now my writing motto. It’s a lot easier to take something mediocre—or totally bad—and rework it, than to make yourself crazy trying to make it perfect the first time.

LJB: I don’t remember saying that so often, but I like it. I think I’ll use that as my motto, too!

Interview With Aidan Donnelley Rowley, Author of The Ramblers

Tell us a little bit about your new release, The Ramblers.

The Ramblers is a love letter to New York City and a tale of three thirty-something friends during one life-changing week. Ultimately, the book is an ode to being thoughtfully lost; it forces us to realize that sometimes the best things in life come when we allow ourselves to ramble, to lose our way.

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

Here Is New York by E. B. White. An inspiration for The Ramblers, this slim book captures New York City brilliantly. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott is my writing (or I should say struggling-with-writing) bible. The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. A breathtaking and raw meditation on time and grief.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

Writing is my passion and brings me tremendous joy, but I must say family. I’m one of five daughters and come from an incredibly close family. My husband and I are now raising three daughters of our own. Before becoming a mother, I worried about the effect kids would have on creativity and productivity, but as it turns out, my girls are my true muses; life is utter chaos, but these girls inject my life with light and laughter and remind me what matters.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The discovery part. I sit down to write one thing, but something else comes out. I love bringing characters to life and crafting stories, but the surprises are the best; waking up with a jolt at 4am with an epiphany about my protagonist – or about myself. I also love how writing can be a much-needed escape from the real world. I’m prone to anxiety and when I’m writing, stress, in all its ugly iterations, melts away.

What inspired you to start Happier Hour Literary Salons?

I started my salons in 2010 when I was about to publish my first novel Life After Yes, as a way to engage with other authors and book-lovers. At the time, I also had two babies underfoot and was longing for my college seminar days where we’d sit around and talk about big, formative ideas. I craved these social/literary evenings for my own sense of identity and sanity and was so pleased to learn that others did too.

What's your favorite thing about living in New York City?

There are so many things I love, but one is the energy. When I hunker down at a coffee shop to write, I’m keenly aware of the stories and conversations and stories bubbling around me, the soundtrack of life, the electric pulse of kindred strangers, who are here, living their lives and also their dreams. Whenever I’m away from New York City for too long, I find myself missing its rhythms, its unmistakable and incomparable heartbeat.

What's your favorite quote or scene from The Ramblers?

“History is everything and it is nothing.” This line gets at a central question of the book, namely: Given that we are products of our childhoods and our genetics and our past, can we ever truly start over? Is it really up to us to create ourselves and re-create ourselves or do our histories determine the bounds of our evolution?

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I love Annie Dillard’s line, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” I try to remember this in the busy blur of the everyday, that each moment, each hour, each day, matters, and added together, makes up a life. I work to stuff my days with things that mean a lot to me – time with family and friends, quality time with books and the blank page, but there are also those frittered-away slices of time thanks to the Internet and its brethren distractions. That’s life.

Interview with Sara B. Larson, Author of Endure

Tell us a little bit about your new release, Endure.

This is the final book in the DEFY trilogy, where we finally find out what will happen to Alexa, Damian, and Rylan.

What's rocking your world this month?

Preparing for a book launch and Christmas simultaneously is pretty much my whole world right now! But I did sneak in reading an ARC of TRUTHWITCH and PASSENGER and they were both fantastic!

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Besides my own characters? I honestly can't pick one...I suck at picking favorites. But I adore Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth and Jane and Rochester. Two classics that will always stand the test of time.

Pretend you qualified for the Olympics this year. What sport would you compete in?

Either diving or equestrian jumpers -- both of which I did growing up.

What's on your writing desk?

I can't say, but stay tuned for more soon!

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

The beach or Disney World (or Disneyland). The beach because it's so gorgeous and peaceful. I love sitting in the sun and reading for hours with the sounds of the waves. And Disney-anything because DISNEY. (And seeing how happy it makes my kids, too.)

What's your favorite quote or scene from Endure?

I can't really say without being spoilery, but let's just say the second part of the dedication has very significant meaning and is a big hint.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." -Eleanor Roosevelt. This has been on my blog since I first started trying to get published and it has meant so much to me throughout this journey.
