Interview with Kelly Jamieson, author of Back Check

What can you tell us about your new release, Back Check?

Back Check is book 4 in my Aces Hockey series. It’s a second-chance romance, which can sometimes be tricky. For me, what makes a second chance story work is what drove the couple apart the first time—if it’s something trivial or immature, I’m not as invested in the couple making it work the second time around. But I think there were pretty compelling reasons for why Tanner and Katelyn didn’t make it when they were first together, and even though they tried to find love with other people, they were meant to be together, and now they’re in the time and place they’re supposed to be.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I was just a child when I read it for the first time, but I loved, loved, loved Anne. That’s definitely one of the first books that started my love of reading, and I also think it was the start of me loving romance…I so wanted Anne and Gilbert Blythe to be together! That kept me reading all the other Anne books.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

I would invite my author friends PG Forte, Kinsey Holley and Viv Arend because they are awesome. Is that cheating? If it must be authors I haven’t met, I would invite JK Rowling because she’s so inspirational; Marian Keyes, who has to be hilarious; and Kristen Ashley because I think she would be fun to have a cocktail with.

Pretend you qualified for the Olympics. What sport would you compete in?

Oh I would definitely be a figure skater! (I’d say hockey, but that’s just too far-fetched, LOL). I love figure skating, it’s such a great combination of athleticism and artistry. I wouldn’t be a pairs skater though, because those girls are CRAZY letting their partner toss them up in the air and throw them across the ice.

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

Time machine. I want one so bad. That comes from being impatient. I want to be where I need to be instantly!

What TV show have you binge watched?

House of Cards, Scandal and Suits most recently!

What scene in Back Check was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the scene where Tanner comes to realize he screwed up and has to make things right with Katelyn. It was fun writing the crazy conversation his teammates are having while they’re sitting in a Nashville bar and Tanner is getting drunk, and I loved how his buddies look after him and guide him through what he needs to do—bare his soul and make himself vulnerable by asking the woman he loves to go with him if he gets traded—when the last time he asked her, she turned him down.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

This one expresses what I’ve always believed. Bad things happen to all of us, and it’s how you deal with it that’s important:

“The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It’s about what you’re made of, not the circumstances.”

Interview with Micki Browning, author of Adrift

What can you tell us about your new release, Adrift?

Marine scientist Mer Cavallo struggles to debunk paranormal explanations and salvage her reputation after a ghost-hunting documentary leader disappears on one of her dives on a Florida Keys shipwreck. Maybe dead men do tell tales.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

I internalize a bit from every book, so many books have impacted my life or manner of thinking. Recently, I read Winter’s Bone by Daniel Woodrell. The subject matter is very dark, and the setting in the Ozarks is stark, but the writing is beautiful, evocative, even poetic at times. I’ve dealt with crime my entire professional life. Woodrell proves a writer can capture the darkness in people without sacrificing their humanity. After I finished it, however, I had to reread all three volumes of The Complete Calvin And Hobbes.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

In writing? Plot from the antagonist’s viewpoint; write from the protagonist’s perspective. In life, the best advice I ever received was a lesson from the police academy: Never give up.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Limiting the guest list to three writers is just cruel, but here goes; Ellis Peters, author of the Brother Cadfael mysteries because I’m a medievalist by education; Marion Zimmer Bradley, because I love her Arthurian legend world-building; and Stephen King, because I don’t know anyone who can go medieval better than the horror master, himself.

Pretend you qualified for the Olympics. What sport would you compete in?

Archery. Definitely. I own a longbow. I’d lose to everyone who has a fancy compound bow, but how often do you have the opportunity to unleash your inner Katniss?

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a pioneer like Laura Ingalls Wilder and live in a little house on the prairie. That lasted until I developed an appreciation for indoor plumbing. Then I saw the opening montage of Charlie’s Angels. They were pioneers of a different ilk. As an adult, I served as a police officer for twenty-two years. I guess I missed the part about them leaving to become private investigators.

What scene in Adrift was your favorite to write?

I love writing the underwater scenes. The scene when the documentary team dives the USS Spiegel Grove was a lot of fun. Since I retired from law enforcement, I’ve been able to indulge one of my passions—scuba diving. I’m a professional divemaster and the Spiegel is my favorite wreck dive.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

"Leap, and the net will appear" by John Burroughs

Interview with Lorelei James, author of Dirty Deeds

What can you tell us about your new release, Dirty Deeds?

This was actually the first romance novel that I ever published. The rights recently reverted to me and as I was re-editing it, I sort of had to laugh because it is a funny, sexy, standalone romance -- and that is super popular right now. I was too far ahead of the trend -- haha -- but I'm hoping that those readers who see the name "Lorelei James" and immediately associate it with westerns, cowboys and erotics, will give this book a chance because it is none of those things and shows that my writing style is very diverse.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I wasn't finding what I wanted to read so I decided to quit talking about writing something and actually started doing it. It took 5 years to get published, and I'll celebrate 12 years of being a published author in May of this year.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Eve Dallas and Roarke from the In Death series by JD Robb, followed closely by Jamie Frasier and Claire in Outlander.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show, who would be your first guest? What you want to ask

Stephen King. How he's sustained his enthusiasm for writing over the decades and how he's able to master excellent short story writing skills when he's so amazing at crafting genre undefinable epics as well as kick-ass commercial fiction.

Where is your happy place?

My happy place is at home and it brings me the most joy to have our kids back, hanging out with Mom and Dad and the dog.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

My superpower would be time management -- the ability to turn back time or the ability to create more time.

What scene in Dirty Deeds was your favorite to write?

The Bobcat scene.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Not specifically. But I noticed a plaque in my office, it's been there for years and my eyes skim over it without really seeing it. Last week as I was trying to clean up a little, the saying on it really struck me as how I'd like to start out my new year -- "Don't postpone joy."

Interview with Mark Onspaugh, author of Deadlight Jack

What can you tell us about your new release, Deadlight Jack?

It is a follow-up to my novel The Faceless One, but it can be read as a standalone. My character George Watters learns a great deal about his past and his heritage when his grandson is kidnapped by a supernatural creature who lives in the Atchafalaya Swamp in Louisiana. The creature calls himself Professor Foxfire – but the locals know him as Deadlight Jack. My mother grew up in Georgia, and Southern Gothic informs some of my work – the South is rich in folklore and mystery.

What's your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

City by Clifford D. Simak

The Stand by Stephen King

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury

Immortality, Inc. by Robert Sheckley

Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My father was both a writer and a great storyteller, and my mother used to read to me when I was little. I had a teacher in grade school who read us The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, and it was the first “big kid” book I bought with my allowance. After that, RayBradbury, Robert Sheckley and Stephen King all inspired me to write.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Flight – absolutely– I always wanted to be able to fly… Of course, invulnerability in case of accidents, and super-speed so I don’t take forever to fly to Paris for lunch…Basically, I’d like the whole Superman package.

What is the one movie you can quote the most?

Superman the Motion Picture (also Animal House, Back to the Future and The Impostors)

What advise would you give your teenage self?

Become a pro writer right away! Study writing in college, don’t be afraid to take studio internships, write more and eat less junk.

What scene in Deadlight Jack was your favorite to write?

I always love writing the banter between Jimmy and George. The scene where George gets his dog (and the return of that dog) and the visit with the Swamp Witch were all so much fun to write.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

It takes very little effort to be kind – even the smallest act can change the course of a day in someone’s life – and perhaps save their life. Beyond that, I am so thankful for the diversity of our population – it would be a sad world if we were all alike.
