Biography & Memoir

Interview with Rhett C. Bruno, author of From Ice to Ashes

What can you tell us about your new release, From Ice to Ashes?

Ever since I wrote Titanborn, I couldn't wait to tell this story. I wanted to do something a little bit different, so, this isn't a sequel, but more like a spin-off. I'm calling it a companion novel. The timelines of both books overlap, but the stories are told from completely opposite perspectives. In fact, some scenes are even viewed from the otherside. Where Titanborn was narrated by a Bounty Hunter working for the Corporations, this story is about the humble laborer's ground under the corporation's boots rising up. It's a heartwrenching tale kicked off by a young offworlder named Kale Trass simply trying to do whatever he can to earn the credits to pay for his sick mother's treatment. This was a passion project to write, and I think it perfectly captures what my goal has been with the Titanborn universe. That there are no good or bad guys, it's all a matter of perspective. I hope readers will get sucked into Kale's story, even root for him, and then after they're done reading and have some time to thing realize, "well, maybe he's actually a terrorist?" That's the sort of blurred lines that I think were established in Titanborn, and in this novel kick you right in the face.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Whew, that's a tough one. I think Cormac McCarthy's The Road kicks off that list. Forced High School reading kind of crippled my desire to read, but that book rekindled it. I loved the simplicity of the story. After that it's tough. I'd say, The Name of the Wind, Dune, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and the Conan Stories by Robert E Howard. I loved the ending of it.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Easy. Harry Potter, pre-the last few books. Being able to use magic and all of that seems like a ton of fun, as long as it's before all the Voldemort taking over stuff happens.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Robert E Howard. He died so early and it's such a shame. Patrick Rothfuss. I love his writing style. He can make eating a meal sound fascinating. And Tim Zahn. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and his books are the pinnacle of the EU in my opinion.

What's in your Netflix queue?

At this moment, I still have to watch Narcos, and this month I can't wait for Iron Fist. I'm caught up on basically everything else ha.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

The best advice I ever received is to read the genre you write in, and to allow your work to be critiqued by others. I think that's a problem a lot of new writers have. They're scared to show their work to anybody but people they know, but I feel the best way to get honest feedback is to just go for it. I can't tell you where I read to do that, or if I thought of it myself, but the best thing I ever did for my writing career was join a critique group. Sure sometimes people are overly harsh, but there's no better way to learn about what isn't and is working for people. Even the best writers need "fresh eyes" on their works, otherwise you get too connected and miss the simplest things.

What scene in Ice to Ashes was your favorite to write?

This is a tough one, but I think it was writing the raid on a ship called the Piccolo from the perspective of the crew. In Titanborn, you see this brutal attack on a harmless Gas Harvester through footage posted by the attackers, and I got to write that same scene through Kale's eyes. Feeling all the confusion and fear as people with covered faces invade. It's a major turning point in the novel.. Enough taht I probably could split the book into two parts, and there is no point in the book where the stakes are higher for Kale.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Not really, but I'd say it's 'don't hide your work.' Like I said earlier, send it out, be critiqued or have your work torn apart and learn from it. I think Architecture School taught me this more than anything. To work for weeks on something, post it up, and have professors tear into you. It happens to everybody, and being able to weed through the feedback for the crucial bits is a skill every writer should learn.

Interview with Kelly Gendron, author of Token

What can you tell us about your new release, Token?

This story takes two damaged souls and brings them together. Retired boxer, Token Kane is a little lost after a few tragic incidents have changed the direction of his life. Harley Redbourne, struggling to survive since the death of her family, has finally hit rock bottom. When Token’s boss hires him to bring Harley back to California, Token finds a broken woman who awakens a need in him to help her. Trapped in a life without love, Harley is surprised by the connection she feels to Token. As they fight their attraction, both find a friend in each other and for the first time, these broken souls share their darkest secrets. TOKEN is book one of five new shameless, sexy and daring brothers who will make you blush all over!

What is your favorite fictional character from literature?

I mostly read romance novels and there are a few great fictional characters out there that are worth mentioning. However, when I write, I tend to favor the male’s side of the story in their POV. To be honest, they’re just so fun to write! But anyone who knows me knows that I’m a superhero junkie. My all-time favorite fictional character would be Wolverine from then X-Men. He’s such a beautiful beast with a huge heart and now they’ve made him into a father. I love it and it also doesn’t hurt that the character is played by Hugh Jackman!

What books are currently on your nightstand?

I wish that I could say I have physical books on my nightstand but it’s used to store other fun things. Now, my eReader holds quite a few books that I’m dying to read when I acquire some much needed me time. Going Down Hard by Carly Phillips, The Play Mate by Kendall Ryan, and The Billionaire by Jessica Bird (aka J.R. Ward) are just a few lying in wait for my eyes to devour.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

J.R. Ward, Steven King and MJ Fields. Could you imagine?

Pretend you qualified for the Olympics. What sport would you compete in?

I’m from the Buffalo area and while we get a lot of snow here, I dislike the cold. Therefore, no winter sports for this girl. I’m not a great swimmer, so those kinds of sports would be out as well. When I was young, after school, my dad and I would go jogging. We’d sprint the last mile. It was the best part of the run, like the rush that I get when I’m nearing the end of a book and everything magically comes together. Hence, my qualifying sport would most likely be the Women’s Marathon.

Who was your childhood hero?

I’d have to say there were five; mom, dad, my older sister and two younger brothers. Each family member showed me unconditional love, challenged me and, through the years, proved to me that no matter how different we all might be each of us is special in our own unique ways.

What scene in Token for It was your favorite to write?

My favorite scenes to write in any of my books are the ones that would require a “spoiler alert” when writing a review, those turning points and aha revealing moments! Token has a few of those moments. When my story brings a tear to my eye (even after reading and reviewing it for the trillionth time) I know that I might have accomplished my ultimate goal to have the reader not only read my book but feel it as well.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

My personal fun motto is “Bad boys, give 'em a little time and experience, and they will evolve into misbehaving men!” But another saying that I like to live by is “The words you speak today should be soft and tender... for tomorrow you may have to eat them.”

Interview with Willow Winters, author of Begging for Bad Boys

What can you tell us about your new release, Begging for Bad Boys?

I can tell you I cannot wait for it!!!  It's over 2500 pages of 13 romances with no cliffhangers and all happily ever afters.  It's everything I love about bad boy romances. We all came together and decided to do something epic.  It's only 99 pennies because we wanted to say hello to readers outside of Amazon and Kindle Unlimited in a big way and altogether at once.

My book, Burned Promises, is the first in the bundle and I cried nearly the entire time I wrote it. It's a heart-wrenching second chance romance and the twist hit me hard!  I really hope the readers love it as much as I do.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

When I was pregnant with my baby girl, about a year and a half ago, I read a romance or two a day. I'm not exaggerating. I was an AVID reader and ravenous for more. After she was finally here, not this past December, but the year before, I was up late at night with her.  I had all these stories in my head I'd come up with and I thought one night while she was sleeping on my chest that I should write them. So I gave it a go! So I basically owe this all to my daughter, Evelynn.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask them?

Oh my gosh!! I would invite Ella James and ask her why she made me cry so hard at the end of Sloth! It's one of my all time favorite books and I would love to hear her talk about it and get her perspective.

What is a typical day like for you?

It's hectic.  I work at home with my children here. I have an (almost) 3-year-old and a one-year-old.  I get up, get coffee and breakfast for them.  Kid time comes first, always. And then it's work, work, work.  There are so many things to do when you're self-published. I try to outsource as much as I can, but I usually don't find the time to write until others have gone to bed and I no longer have emails to respond to or Facebook notifications. So a lot of times I'm up till 2 or 3 am to get my writing done.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

I think invisibility.  So I can eaves drop!! LOL

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Don't compare someone else's middle to your beginning.  I was very upset when I started out because I didn't know what I was doing wrong.  And someone told me, you're doing everything right, you just need time.  Success is exponential and it's hurting you to compare your story to someone else who's already been here for years.  That advice changed my outlook tremendously.

That and don't stop writing. Ever.

What scene in Begging for Bad Boys was your favorite to write?

Ooh! One of the first scenes, when the couple first sees each other and the bad boy tries to get the good girl to do something naughty. I freaking loved that scene. I have never shot gun before. But it's a sexy scene with a little laughter and a whole lot of good feels. It reminds them of why they loved each other all those years ago and those feels always make me happy.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Surround yourself with good people, think good things, do good things and good things will happen.

Interview with Tom Savage, author of The Woman Who Knew Too Much

What can you tell us about your new release, The Woman Who Knew Too Much?

This is the second entry in my new series about Nora Baron, the New York-based wife, mother, actor, and college acting teacher who accidentally becomes a field agent for the CIA. The “accidental” recruitment occurs in her first adventure, MRS. JOHN DOE. When she gets a call from London telling her that her husband, Jeff, has been killed in a car crash while on a business trip, she flies there to identify the body. From that point on, her life is in danger, and she ends up being pursued all over England and France by people who clearly want her dead. Why? Well, that’s one of many secrets Nora learns while on the run, but it involves the safety of the entire world. In the new story, THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, Nora is approached by the CIA to help them with another European op, this time in Venice, Italy. A famous Russian actress wants to defect to America, and she’s offering to share some vital secrets with the U.S. in exchange. Nora’s job is to get the woman safely out of Europe, which turns out to be a deadly assignment, especially when Venice is shut down by a massive snowstorm. Unlike actual, trained CIA operatives, Nora is learning her new job on her feet--and those feet are usually running.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

There were two, and I read them both when I was 15. I was laid up in bed with the flu, so I (reluctantly) started reading my English class assignment, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. To my great surprise, I loved that book. I didn’t want it to end, but it did, so I asked my older sister what I should read next (she was the reader in our family). My sister gave me Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. By the time I finished reading those two books back-to-back, I knew I wanted to be a writer.

Say you're a host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

That’s a tough one--all my giants are no longer with us. It would be difficult to get Agatha Christie on a talk show at this point, but she would be my first choice. I’m a mystery writer, and every time I sit down to write, I have to come up with fresh new ideas. Christie wrote 65 mystery novels, 6 romance novels, 12 plays, and more than 100 short stories between 1920 and 1976. She gave us not one but two immortal detectives, Jane Marple and Hercule Poirot. Her sheer stamina amazes me. I guess I’d ask her what she eats for breakfast.

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

A time machine, so I could go back and interview Agatha Christie for my talk show.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I’m from a show business family. My late mom was an actor and director. She also read mystery novels voraciously, and she passed this love on to her children. I trained as an actor in college, and I minored in English. I knew from an early age that acting and writing were my two great loves, so I always knew my life would involve them. I was a professional actor before I began publishing my novels. Now I have Nora Baron, a series detective who is a professional actor--she’s the result of my twin obsessions.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

I guess every writer would say that the “happy place” is wherever we’re writing. That’s certainly true for me. I’m happiest when I’m creating stories because it allows me to live in a fantasy world without being a deadbeat. That’s the great thing about the arts--what most people would consider “escaping reality” or “hiding from the real world” is actually what we do for a living.

What scene in The Woman Who Knew Too Much was your favorite to write?

There’s one sequence that was especially fun for me. I’ve loved Venice ever since I first saw it as a teenager. I stood in the massive Piazza San Marco, and I just knew it would be a great setting for an action scene in a thriller. Now, 40 years later, I finally got a chance to write that scene. Nora is in Venice to “extract” a famous Russian actress and bring her to America while eluding Russian agents bent on stopping her. The busy piazza is selected as the ideal place for the defection. Unfortunately for Nora, it doesn’t go smoothly. As a matter of fact, she--well, I won’t spoil anything; you’ll just have to read it to find out.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

H. G. Wells: “The first man to raise his fist is the man who has run out of ideas.” Despite my action-oriented stories, I’m a big believer in civilized communication. Our continued existence depends on it, now more than ever. Peace on earth.

Interview with Bernard Beck, author of One American Dream

What can you tell us about your new release, One American Dream?

One American Dream is about aspirations. The first character in the book, Jack, who arrives from Poland as a ten-year-old aspires to be an authentic American. Frequently, as he grows older and moves into the middle class, he pauses to evaluate his status. He yearns to be an "authentic American" but that amorphous goal is constantly beyond his reach. Similarly, his wife Rose, and their daughter Ruthie yearn for the same thing, but each from their own perspective. In the end, after years of striving and struggle they realize that the essence of being an authentic American is to dream and aspire - always aspire to make life better for themselves and their fellow man.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Ever since I was a child, my mother wrote short stories and articles, some of which were published. She always encouraged me to write, but I always deflected her efforts. I studied business and became an importer, but the creative seeds had been planted and when it came time for me to retire I took up writing. Surprisingly, I not only enjoyed it but I was pretty good at it and my first two books were published by reputable academic publishers.

My mother had written both fiction and non-fiction and after my first (non-fiction) books were published I decided to try my hand at fiction. This proved to be both extremely difficult and emotionally draining, yet I persisted. When I thought the manuscript was finished I sent it to Amberjack Publishing who agreed to publish it if I would accept their editorial modifications. The changes that Amberjack suggested transformed my novel in many important ways.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

The Rise of David Levinsky by Abraham Cahan. I had been trying to write a book about my mother for many years and The Rise of David Levinsky showed me how to write a story of personal development within a historic context. I learned that a character does not develop in a vacuum but is shaped by seemingly unimportant everyday events. I tried to convey the ambitions and anxieties that each of the characters in One American Dream experienced. The adversarial tensions became, for me, an essential part of the narrative. There is no linear path in life, but we must all believe that we are progressing in the right direction.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

This might seem a little prosaic, but I would choose my wife, Judy Beck. She has been my friend for more than 60 years and we have grown up together. In those years we have soared and fallen, succeeded and failed. But in the end, just like Jack and Rose in One American Dream, we have moved far beyond our beginnings.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

I think I would probably like to visit the world of Hemingway. Especially during the Spanish Revolution. Although, in the end, it was a world of smashed dreams, it represents for me a time of hope and renewal.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Not really a relevant question for a retired person. So, I will report how I spend my free time - writing and thinking about writing. I am very slow and meticulous in my writing, and I rewrite everything over and over. I try to hear the voices of the characters and to accurately reproduce them. I want to avoid artifice, which I believe comes from using shortcuts, and I want their voices and sentiments to be as genuine as possible. I want them to reflect, not only their personal aspirations, but also the tenor of the time - I want them to be accurately portrayed and I obsess over this portrayal.

What scene in One American Dream was your favorite to write?

Ruthie - the character that represents my mother - has moved with her family from working class Williamsburg, where she had had many teenage friends to middle-class Borough Park where she has none. The only value that has traveled with her is her love of books. She is an insatiable reader. My favorite scene is where she goes into the "adult" section of the library to choose a book and is ejected by the librarian. Eventually she stages a passive protest - and wins! She is permitted to read adult books as selected by the librarian. This victory presages all of the battles that she fights in her growing maturity.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Yes! I believe that everything always works out for the best. Sometimes, that "best" takes a long time to reveal itself, but in the end, it is there and I am able to understand the necessity of the trials and tribulations that led to it.
