Interview with Michael Ridpath, author of Amnesia

What can you tell us about your new release, Amnesia?

An old man living by a loch in Scotland hits his head and forgets everything.  The granddaughter of a friend of his, Clémence, is tasked with looking after him and prodding his memory.  She finds a memoir written by him that confesses to killing “the only woman he ever loved”, a Frenchwoman who turns out to be her grandmother.  Shocked, she decides to read the memoir, hoping to jog his memory.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Any Human Heart by William Boyd.  This is a brilliant fictional biography of the life of Logan Mountstuart from the age of 18 to 85.  It inspired me to write the fictional memoir within Amnesia.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt is a great novel is so many ways.  In particular I love the way it portrays a tight group of twenty-year-old friends dealing with a major crisis.

Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow is beautifully written and also contains the best “whodunit” in plain sight.

Money by Émile Zola was written in the 1860s, but could have described the financial world of the turn of the twenty-first century.  Zola nails the competitiveness and self-delusion rather than simple greed that characterizes ruthless money-men.

Ghost by Robert Harris is about a ghost writer of a British Prime Minister’s memoirs.  A story of great twists and verve set in Martha’s Vineyard in winter.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would like to ask John Grisham how he writes books that so many people want to read.  I would force him to be specific, with specific examples, and I would take very careful notes.

What's a typical day like for you?

We have recently moved from a house just on the edge of London to a flat right in the middle, and I’m enjoying it.  I write from home.  So I start writing at eight o’clock, reading through the previous two days’ work.  After about nine-thirty I stroll to a coffee shop and think a bit about what I am writing.  I return home and write until lunch time.  Then I go for a walk for about an hour, through Kensington Gardens, or along the Regents Canal, or through Holland Park.  In the afternoon, I do the increasing amount of non-writing work involved in publishing these days, and swear at the glitches in my computer.  And in the evening my wife gets home from work, and I cook dinner or we go out.  Since the weather has got better, we have started taking a bottle of rosé and a picnic to Kensington Gardens.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

If you are lucky enough at some point in your career to receive a big advance, save most of it.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Stop people getting angry on social media, or newspapers and TV for that matter. An angry mind makes poor decisions.  As does an angry populace.

What scene in Amnesia was your favorite to write?

I wrote three or four chapters set in Capri in 1939 and 1947 when my old man visits the island with his friends.  I had been to Capri twice in the past, and I went to the British Library and did a lot of research on the island in the middle of the twentieth century.  I tried to write the chapters without visiting the place.  They were OK, but they weren’t quite good enough.  So I explained to my wife that I absolutely had to go to Capri on a research trip the following week.  She understood – I love my wife.

I had never researched a place after I had written the relevant scenes in my book before.  It made visiting the island, which is beautiful anyway, an amazing experience.  By that stage my characters seemed real to me, so I felt I knew the island extremely well, not from my previous two visits, but from having placed my characters there over four chapters.  As I walked around the island, I thought to myself: so this is where Tony’s house was; this is the Roman ruin where they went for a picnic, and in particular, this is the Villa Fersen, the ruined folly high up on a ledge in the cliffs, where the eponymous Swedish millionaire playboy gallivanted, and where two of my characters … well, I don’t want to spoil the story.

When I returned to London, I rewrote those scenes, and I think I have ended up with my best effort at describing any of the locations in my novels so far.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

When you have a problem to solve, think about how to solve it first, rather than what the solution is.

Interview with Monique DeVere, author of Adam

What can you tell us about your new release, Adam?

Adam: Her Deal Maker is the first book in my new Pleasure Flights series. It’s a romantic comedy beach read about co-workers who pilot for a helicopter tour company in California. Adam and Lacey have been fighting their attraction for five years until they’re accidentally booked into the same room at a conference in Washington D.C. And that’s when everything gets complicated. Lacey is a thrill-seeker who has a no-dating-co-workers-rule. Adam is strong, caring and protective—okay, some might call him overprotective. He has a no-dating-thrill-seekers-rule. So that’s the end of that... then they’re assigned the task of negotiating a contract and have to fly to a tropical private island where things really heat up!

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t making up stories to entertain my younger siblings. I was one of those kids who spent a lot of time daydreaming. It wasn’t long before I started writing down the stories I made up so when my siblings said, “Tell us the one about…” I’d be able to re-tell it. Soon, my school friends wanted copies of my stories. I wrote more stories and sold them for 10c each. I penned my first full-length novel at age fifteen and I’ve been writing ever since. I guess writing has always been part of my nature, and not something inspired by other writers.

What books are currently on your night stand?

My night stand and Kindle are very different. On my night stand, I keep my copy of the Holy Bible, along with a devotional, prayer book, and whichever spiritual book I’m currently reading. Right now, that would be Secrets of Enoch & the Apocalypse of Baruch.

My Kindle has all sorts! My new TBR pile is the Terri Osburn Ardent Springs series. I’ve only recently discovered Terri and love her voice!

If you were a teacher, what book would you assign your class?

The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby.

What's a typical day like for you?

Alarm goes off at 5:45am.

Rise at 6am. Prayer/Devotion. Exercise. Shower. Drop our teen daughter to school in the next town.

8:45am. Return home; go for a three-mile walk.

10:30am. Grab a cup of herbal tea, a bulletproof coffee, or a protein shake, and head into my study where I remain—trying my best to avoid interruptions—until it’s time to pick our daughter up from school.

4pm. I return home in time for the after-school arrival of two of our granddaughters.

Prepare dinner and catch up with “kiddie” life.

It depends on whether hubby is on days or night shifts as to how the rest of my evening will go. If hubby is on nights, I will head back to work after granddaughters have been collected and hubby has left for work. I’ve been known to work right through until the sun comes up. Then can’t go to bed 'cause, well… it’s morning. Thankfully, that doesn’t occur too often.

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

A supplement that busts patience. I wish I had more patience.

What scene in Adam was your favorite to write?

The Meet-Cute.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

My philosophy is simple. “If it causes a problem, it has to go”. Life becomes so much simpler when we live by a code.

Interview with Willow Winters, author of Unforgiven

What can you tell us about your new release, Unforgiven?

Well it completely broke me and made me cry for one.  I never intended for the sins and secrets series to be a duet but Jules and Mason's story needed so much more than one book or even one story could give.  I do see the first book as a complete story and I was shattered when I wrote the last chapter and stole their happily ever after from them. I carried that emotion with me as I wrote their second book and I love how it turned out.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

- M Never's Decadence After Dark Series.

- LP Lovell and Stevie Cole's Wrong/Wrath series

- Sylvia Day's Crossfire Series

- And... I'm saying it ... Twilight and Fifty Shades of Gray -- and they're sharing a spot so I can give another book (she says hoping she can cheat like this)

- Ella James Sloth

I also loved Belle Aurora's Raw, Jade West's Dirty Bad series, Monster in His Eyes (series) by JM Darhower, The Kane Trilogy from Stylo Fantome, Monster's in the Dark series from Pepper Winters, CJ Robert's Captive in the Dark and The Life of Anna by Marrissa Honeycutt (which is not for the faint of heart).  Those are basically all of my top reads EVER that utterly destroyed me and I love them all for it.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

My favorite couple is difficult to pick... Obviously, I couldn't even pick 5 books - let alone 1 couple.  If I HAD to do it ... I'm going to go with ... this is HARD - with a gun to my head I say Tor and Jude.  Both strong characters I absolutely loved.

What's in your Netflix queue?

I hardly watch TV anymore - but when I do it's real housewives!

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

With my kids - hands down.  They love blocks and story time, so I'd be crosslegged on the floor trying to keep the two from fighting for my extra hour.

What scene in Unforgiven was your favorite to write?

The ending!  I NEEDED it.  It was so emotional and I found a scene so hard to write that I had to go write the ending before I could continue.  So by far - the ending was my favorite, it gave me the feels and made the emotional rollercoaster worth it.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

YES!! If I can look down and say "cute undies?" check, "shaved legs?" check, "pedicure?" check!  Then I can conquer the world.  ... Keeping that in mind, I need to go shave and get a pedi.  The world can wait an hour!

Interview with Demi Damson, author of Ruthless Love

What can you tell us about your new release, Ruthless Love?

This is my first romance novel (my first novel ever! Although I have written short stories and a few novellas) and so I've been super nervous and excited about it. I've been so lucky with great writing group cheering me on and excellent feedback and a wonderful cover designed by a friend! Underneath the surface, the story is really about confusion and mistaken identities and assumptions that we make. I had great fun writing it and I really hope that people enjoy reading it!

What's the last book you read?

Well, I've been reading a bunch of erotic romance novellas for, um, research purposes. Seriously, it's a great way to get a feel for what works and what doesn't. However, I'm not sure I want to name them in public! Before that I read The Girl on the Train which I enjoyed although it's not my normal kind of book.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Catherine and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. So much drama and obsession and yet so unable to understand each other. Scarlett and Rhett are a close second. Hey, I have a type! I'd never noticed that before.

What's a typical day like for you?

I work from home as a copy-writer, so things vary a lot depending on how many projects I have going on. I try to spend an hour on fiction first thing, while my brain is still fresh. Then I do work writing and admin until the late afternoon. Most days I'll walk 10,000 steps which I often combine with food shopping. I rarely write in the evenings. Although I don't think of myself as a morning person, I definitely write better before lunch. Often I'll take that time to read or to chat online and catch up on social media. I love to cook, so I can usually be found in the kitchen with a wooden spoon in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

None of this is anywhere near as important as it seems like it is right now. Relax and have some fun.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Time control. Speed it up at the dentist, slow it down when deadlines are approaching. But probably I shouldn't be allowed to pause time because I'd just use it to selfishly read and write twice as much.

What scene in Ruthless Love was your favorite to write?

The restaurant scene. Jordan's taken Charlotte to a super nice restaurant to impress her when really, what she'd been hoping for was the local burger joint. Both of their expectactions were totally out of whack and although they both really got into each other despite all the problems, I knew in the end, Jordan was going to blow it. It was a lot of fun to write.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

"If you want to achieve greatness, stop asking for permission."

It's from street art by Eddie Colla and it reminds me to seize the moment. I have to work hard not always put everyone else first.

Interview with Alice Ward, author of SEAL'd Heart

What can you tell us about your new release, SEAL'd Heart?

SEAL'd Heart was a joy to write. I tackled some very difficult topics such as PTSD and I am so very heartened to see from reviews that it was received very well. Many have said that they could relate and this is a huge compliment to me.

What's on your writing desk?

A framed photo of my husband and a framed photo of a dog I had when I was a child. Often, a coffee mug half full of cold sludge. A notepad with lots of my story idea scribbling.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Everything! But if I have to choose just one thing… the time I spend plotting in my head. That’s when the characters really start speaking to me.

If you could invent anything, what would it be

A machine that helped me pull the stories from my head more quickly. I have so many of them!

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

Writing, of course!

What scene in SEAL'd Heart was your favorite to write?

Oh, there were so many scenes that brought me to tears as I wrote them so I'll pick something happier. It was such fun revisiting some of the characters from my The Beasts of Baseball series. They made a cameo appearance in SEAL'd Heart.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire. This strikes such a chord in me. I wish I knew who coined it.

Interview with L. P. Dover, author of Hard Stick

What can you tell us about your new release, Hard Stick?

I love Hard Stick, especially the hockey players. In my mind, I totally feel like they're real people. Hard Stick is a sexy, romantic suspense. It doesn't center around hockey the entire book. I wanted to throw in other elements. What I love most about the story is the connection between Kellan and Kristen, and also the connections they have with their friends. The bantering back and forth between the hockey players was fun to write. As far as the book, I love adding in the suspense factor. Kellan has been interested in Kristen for a while now, but she steers clear from men after she escaped from her psychotic ex. Kellan proves to be a man she can trust with not only her heart and soul, but her body as well. However, when her past comes back to haunt her, Kellan risks everything to keep her safe. Hard Stick isn't light and fluffy, it's sexy, action-packed and down right dirty.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've always been a big reader. I used to only read books by traditional authors, but then I discovered indie authors. I had no clue what an indie author was at the time, but I read a few books by one of my favorites, Quinn Loftis. Needless to say, I fell in love with her books and stalked her on Facebook. I befriended her and about died when she took the time to reply back to my messages. After that, I discovered new authors and became friends with them as well. For years, I wanted to write a book, but I always thought it was impossible. Quinn gave me the push I needed to get started. Now, she's one of my good friends and I'm still astounded to this day.

If you were a teacher, what book would you assign your class?

Anne of Green Gables. It's one of my favorites

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing is being able to live in a different world for a while. When I'm writing, I can see those characters and imagine I'm right there with them. It's an escape from reality. Plus, I can do all the things in my books that I haven't been able to do in real life. My characters can travel the world and be whoever they want to be. Basically, I'm living vicariously through them and I love it.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

The answer to this question is simple, but it's also hard as well. I would have to say my grandmother. I'd give anything to see her again. She died before I began writing so she didn't get to see how much my life has changed. I used to confide in her about everything. I would've loved to see her face while she read passages in my books. She knew all of my deepest and darkest secrets. It'd be nice to have her back for even just a few minutes. The only problem would be having to say goodbye to her.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Binge watching past episodes of the Game of Thrones. I've already watched them three times now. I'm OBSESSED with that show!

What scene in Hard Stick was your favorite to write?

Definitely the scene where Kristen finds out from Dallas that Kellan made a bet he could get her to go out with him. It's really funny. I love the banter between Kristen and Kellan after that.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Yes ... KEEP SMILING. Even when times are hard and things might not be going my way, I keep on smiling. I wasn't nicknamed Smiley all my life for nothing.
