Interview with Penelope Bloom, author of Knocked Up and Punished

What can you tell us about your new release, Knocked Up and Punished?

Knocked Up and Punished is the third installment in my series of Knocked Up books. Each of them are standalones, but this book has a cameo appearance from Leo and Lysa (the hero and heroine from Knocked Up by the Master). Compared to the previous two books, I really felt like Knocked Up and Punished managed to stay with what made the first two so fun and dirty, but it also has some very unique elements that let it stand out on its own as well. What's the best book you've ever read?

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

Oddly enough, it was The Picture of Dorian Gray. I was always very shy in school, and on a whim I started reading that book at the beginning of senior year. I forget exactly what the words were, but something in the book just made me come to a realization that time was fleeting and I wouldn't have forever. It was such a strange and wonderful moment, like I had been in a daze for years without realizing it, and at that moment I just snapped out of it. I told myself I was going to introduce myself to this guy in my English class I had a crush on... So I did, and now it's over ten years later and we're married with two kids!

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Call me a dork, but 100% I'd be sipping some butterbeer in the Harry Potter world. I would just lay on the greens outside Hogwarts and drink it all in every single day. Siggghhhhh. I wish.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I'd want to talk to Harry Potter (hardly literary, I know) and ask him why the heck he went with Ginny! Why Ginny!? There was barely any chemistry there. Ugh!

Pretend you qualified for the Olympics. What sport would you compete in?

Tennis for sure! I used to coach tennis when I taught high school and I still play several times a week. I absolutely love it.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was really little because I loved animals. But I actually got a job as a vet tech after college and hated it. I love animals when they are healthy and happy, but I guess I'm too weak to see them in pain and suffering, which is when you see a lot of them working at a vet.

What scene in Knocked Up and Punished was your favorite to write?

I love the opening scene. Something about insta-lust and insta-love just really calls to me. I know it's silly on some levels and seems kind of beyond-belief, but I really enjoy writing it in a way that to me feels believable--just creating characters and moments that come together so perfectly that you can believe the fantasy and dive in. That's what really excited me in writing romance. I want to make the fantasy seem real, because we all need a little more fantasy in our lives.

Interview with Kimberly Readnour, author of Second Chance Hero

What can you tell us about your new release, Second Chance Hero?

Second Chance Hero was the easiest book for me to write, mostly because of my love for baseball and passion for romance. I wanted to write in the genre I love to read, so I started plotting out the story. It didn’t hurt that my favorite team was having one heck of a year and let’s say I was inspired.

Second Chance Hero is all about redemption. Zach and Lacey dated in college, but their relationship came with an expiration date—graduation. Signed with a major baseball team, Zach knew failing wasn’t an option, and he had to concentrate on his career. Five years later, they meet at a post-game press conference. One look at Lacey is all it takes for Zach to realize he made the biggest mistake of his life. Now, he wants her back. The only thing is, Lacey wants nothing to do with him. But here’s the catch, Zach ALWAYS gets what he wants. Will he this time?

What or who inspired you to become an author?

When my daughter was a teenager, I would read the books she brought home. I have always enjoyed reading young adult books and shared the same interest as my daughter. One particular book, she never finished because she did not like the content. Curious, I started reading it and was shocked at the content myself. I remember telling my daughter that I would write her better stories. I had no idea I would develop this passion for writing. Of course, once I finished the trilogy for her, I switched to writing the genre I love to read—romance.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

Anyone who knows me at all will know I love the romance genre. So when they look at my bookshelf, they may be surprised to see my secret stash of Stephen King books. Especially the book It. My fear of clowns would make people question why the book is anywhere near my residence. But in my high school days, I read quite a few of his novels. Everyone needs to have a good, scary novel to freak them out.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

I’m going to pull from recent years and go with Jackie and Lucas from Tammara Webber’s Breakable. I loved their connection right from the beginning. Sigh, just thinking about them makes me smile.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Plotting a story is one of my favorite things about writing. I love to be able to start with an idea and watch it unfold into a full-fledged story. Character development, along with world-building, has to be my favorite things to do.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

I know I should pick someone who can give me great insight, but I would LOVE to meet John Cusack. He is actually who I pictured as the detective in my young adult trilogy. My crush began when I watched Sixteen Candles. His role was minor, but he was so cute. Plus, he is a Cub’s fan! Double win!

What scene in Second Chance Hero was your favorite to write?

There were many scenes I loved writing in Second Chance Hero, but the opening scene was my most favorite. Lacey had to cover Zach’s post-game press conference, and she really didn’t want to be there. After all, it was the first time in five years for her to see him. A lot of conflicting emotions swirled through her, which I found exciting to write. I love conveying the characters emotions, and hopefully, the reader can experience some of their turmoil as well.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

About fifteen years ago, I was at the bookstore looking for stocking stuffers for my children. On a bookmark, a shortened quote, “Never, never, never quit” from Winston Churchill stood out to me. Needless to say, each child received that bookmark, and I have repeatedly reminded them of his words. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t live by that motto myself.

Interview with Christopher Cartwright, author of The Aleutian Portal

What can you tell us about your new release, The Aleutian Portal?

Science tells us that the Navajo First People who occupied what is now known as the Four Corners in the United States share very similar DNA to those in both Alaskan Yupik and Siberian First People. Likewise, all three groups of First Peoples share similar mythology within their differing belief systems.

History tries to explain this by referring us back to the last ice-age roughly 13,000 years ago, when the Bering Strait was still a landmass.

The Aleutian Portal, looks at a very different possible explanation.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My mother, who was writing science fiction in the eighties and introduced me to the world of Orson Scott Card, Isaac Asimov and H.G. Wells.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

he ship of a NUMA vessel in the original series of books by Clive Cussler… Nah, who am I kidding? It would be Hogwarts for sure!

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I can travel to any time or place and live out any story I can imagine. I like to see the world from my character’s points of view, where even some of the worst villains of history often start out with good intentions. Unlike writing a film script, I’m not restrained by production costs. My action scenes could might cost millions to produce in a film, but are free to imagine.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

The ability to fly – because let’s face it, if you could fly like a bird, what else would you possibly want to do?

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Living vicariously in the world great adventure where anything was possible, either by reading a good book or writing it.

What scene in The Aleutian Portal was your favorite to write?

There’s a scene with a lot of bad guys on motorcycles. I won’t go into it, but let’s just say when someone makes the mistake of picking a fight with Genevieve, it’s unlikely to turn out very well for them. She grew up in a dangerous part of Russia, in a world where you don’t get to grow up unless you can fight.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

It is better to be alone, than in bad company – George Washington

Interview with Lauren Landish, author of Matchmaker

What can you tell us about your new release, Matchmaker?

I’m a sucker for reality TV. I know, I know, but it’s the truth! Matchmaker has a “Bachelorette” style format and I tried to make it like the show, but with a twist! I think readers will love the secondary characters in it. They’re a hoot!

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I don’t know that one person in particular inspired me, but I’ve always been a huge reader and wanted to write my own book(s). Previously there were just too many gatekeepers to make that a reality for me. I found out about self publishing around 2012 and started looking into how I could do it, and since then I haven’t looked back!

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Willow Winters, Leigh Shen, and Bella Love Wins

What's your favorite thing about writing?

It’s a creative outlet for me. It lets me visit worlds and get lost in them, giving me (and readers) of the grim reality of real life!

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

Vegas or Hawaii. Vegas because I love to gamble and love all the lights. Hawaii because of the tropical beauty!

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Sleeping! I seem to never get enough sleep, an extra hour would definitely help!

What scene in Matchmaker was your favorite to write?

The Prologue! It’s basically foreshadowing to the moment where she chooses between the final two men, so I wanted to make it as tense as possible. I love how it turned out!

Barbara Longley interviews the third-century hero from her new release, Tangled in Time

“Thank you both for agreeing to meet with me today, Mr. and Mrs. O’Boyle. My readers are eager to learn from the source what it took to join the ranks of Fionn MacCumhail’s elite third-century Irish army. We’re also interested in hearing more about ghost whispering from you, Regan so let’s get started. I’ll begin the interview with you, Fáelán. Tell us about the trials you faced and passed in order to be ordained into the Fianna.”

“’Tis glad I am to set the record straight. For centuries, academics have claimed the legendary Fianna were naught but myth and legend. I’m here to tell ye nothing could be further from the truth. My da served in the Fianna for may years, as did I.”

“Exactly.” This man has such a charismatic presence. He bears the physique and carriage of a seasoned warrior, combined with an unpretentious boyish charm, all wrapped together in one hell of an attractive package. It’s easy to understand why the fae princess set out to seduce him. Unfortunately, his rejection of her is what led to his cursed sate. “Let’s begin with the trials a man had to pass to become a Fiann. What can you tell us about the tests you faced, Fáelán?”

The proud Fiann shifted in his seat and reached for his wife’s hand. Since the moment the two walked into my office, I couldn’t help but notice his constant need to touch Regan in some small way. Knowing what the two had gone through to be together, I understood completely. It had taken Fáelán nearly eighteen hundred years to find his “wee miracle,” as he so fondly called her.

“Aye, ten agreements had to be met afore a laddie was accepted into Fionn’s army. The first had to do with codes of behavior, ethics and such, and I’ll not bore ye with those. The second through the tenth are far more interesting.”

Regan smiled at her husband. “This is the part he loves best, bragging about his prowess.”

“And why should I not, love?”

“Oh, you should.” Regan’s eyes filled with loving pride, and she placed her hand of her obvious baby bump. “Go on, oh boasty one,” she teased, and turned to me. “I get a kick out of  hearing him brag, because it cracks me up when my strong, brave warrior husband encounters a spider in our bathroom.” She laughed.

“The beasties have eight fecking legs, love.” He shuddered. “I’ll admit, my wife deals with spiders, but when it comes to my becoming a Fiann, ’tis not bragging, but simple fact.”

“All right, we’ll skip the first requirement,” I said, hoping to get the couple back on track.

“Aye, the second requirement involved proving I possessed poetical genius.”

“What does poetry have to do with being a warrior?” My fingers raced over the keyboard to capture every single word either of them uttered.

“There’s far more to defeatin’ a foe than brute strength and skill with a sword or spear.” Fáelán’s brow rose. “Cleverness and a certain sharpness of wit are every bit as important as the sharpness of a man’s sword.” He tapped his temple. “A Fian had to prove he was able to outthink his opponent, ye see. To be counted amongst the Fianna, a man had to prove he possessed the strength of mind to rise above his own doubts and fears, aye?”

One side of his mouth quirked up, giving me a glimpse of that self-deprecation that made him so unique.

“Do ye want to know the truth? Fionn MacCumhail had a great love for storytellin’ and the recitation of poetry. He also loved music. If a laddie must prove the superiority of his mind, may as well make the test enjoyable for our commander.”

“All right. That makes sense. On to requirement number three.”

“The third had to do with mastery of weapons. After proving myself with sword, bow and lance, I was placed in the center of a field of sedge taller than my knees. I had only a shield and a lance made of hazel, and I had to remain within a designated space. Nine experienced soldiers were stationed in the hills surrounding me. All nine threw their javelins at me at once. Had I been wounded, had I not been able to deflect and shield myself from every last one of their spears, I would have been rejected.”

“Oh.” Regan said. “That’s what you were referring to when you told me you’d defeated nine warriors at once?”

“Aye.” He nodded. “The fourth trial involved running full out through a forest, whilst defending myself from attack the entire way. If I had been overtaken or wounded, that would’ve been the end for me. The fifth was no challenge at all. I had to hold my sword and shield at the ready for a length of time without the slightest tremble.” He shrugged. “My da had me practicin’ for that test since the year I’d turned four.”

“All right, so that brings us to the sixth.” I typed away at the treasure trove of information I was being given.

“Aye, the sixth.” He nudged his wife. “The one having to do attention to detail, as I’ve explained to my doubting wife.”

Regan snorted and rolled her eyes. “The hair thing?”

“Aye the hair thing.” He winked at me before continuing. “I had to braid and bind my hair. Then, I was chased through a wood by the swiftest of Fionn’s warriors. At the end of that gauntlet, if any of my hair had come undone—and mind, the Fianna chasing me did their best to reach me and tug it loose—I would have been disqualified. Fleetness of foot, ye see, and attention to detail were what mattered.”

“This is the first I’ve heard you were chased during that test,” Regan said, her eyes wide.

Fáelán grinned. “And now that ye know, are ye properly impressed by your man’s worthiness?”

That elicited another eye roll from his wife. I needed to bring the couple back on track again. “So, the seventh test?”

“ Aye. For the seventh I had to stand atop a rotten stick and not break it, proving my nimblesness and agility. For the eighth, I leaped over a tree as high as my forehead with no difficulty, and worked my way under another that was lower in height than my knee.”

“That brings us to nine and ten.” Who would believe the amazing glimpse into ancient history I was being given. How could I prove my source was genuine without exposing the incredible journey these two had gone through? No one believe me or them, of that I was certain.

“The ninth was another trial involving running. I had to run a barefoot with a thorn in my foot. If I could remove the thorn without breaking stride, I passed.” Fáelán sat a little straighter then. “The tenth was the most important requirement of all, for I had to swear an oath of allegiance to be ordained into the Fianna. I swore fealty to my commanding officer and to our king, vowing to be faithful and obedient only to them.” He glanced askance at his wife. “Fionn freed me from my vow, or I would not have come through time to be with my wee miracle.”

“Wow.” I sighed as I finished typing. “Thank you, Fáelán. So now that you are a permanent resident in the twenty-first century, what are your future plans?”

“I plan to be the best husband and father I can be.” He brought Regan’s hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. “I’m also working on my PhD in archaeology. I mean to prove to the world once and for all that Fionn and his army were not myths. We existed. We protected Ireland from invading armies and kept the peace throughout the land. Who better than I to prove we were real. I know where to look for the proof.” He winked again.

“So, onto you, Regan. What—”

“I’m afraid we’re out of time,” she said. “If you want, we can reschedule my part of the interview, or we can skip it. We have an appointment we can’t miss.” Regan rose from the couch.

I knew how sensitive Regan was about being a ghost whisperer, and how important her privacy was to her, especially with a little one coming. I wouldn’t push.  “The decision is entirely yours. Just let me know.”

“Aye, we must be off. Today we’re having a . . .” Fáelán looked to his wife. “What’s it called again, love?”

“An ultrasound.”

“That’s exciting.” I walked with them to the door. “Are you going to learn the sex of your baby today?”

“Nay.” The third century warrior beamed with pride and placed his hand at the small of his wife’s back. “We wish to be surprised.” He helped Regan into her coat before slipping his arms into his leather biker jacket.

“Thank you so much for granting me this interview. I hope it won’t be the last, and I look forward to hearing all about your success in the field of archaeology. Please let me know when your baby is born.”

“We’ll be in touch. Thank you as well.” Fáelán wrapped his arm around his wife’s shoulders and guided her out into the overcast chilly dampness that was so much a part of Ireland’s autumn landscape.

I watched as Fáelán helped Regan into their shiny, new Land Rover, and then they drove away. Would they really keep in touch? I hoped so, but I wasn’t going to hold my breath. I had to swear an oath just to get this interview. Their identity had to be kept secret, which rendered the entire undertaking pointless. Did I care? Not really. My interest, though I hadn’t shared this with either of them, was purely and selfishly . . . academic.
