Interview with Becki Willis, author of Plain Roots

What can you tell us about your new release, Plain Roots?

This is the story of a woman searching for her roots and for the family she’s never known. Her quest leads her to the Amish country and a surprising connection to the Plain people. She soon discovers that no family is perfect, and even in this idyllic setting, secrets and tragedies abound.

The story is set in one of my all-time favorite ‘happy places’ —the Amish countryside in Lancaster County, PA. To make certain the details were right—and to show the utmost respect for the Plain community—I had the book proofed by a local Mennonite woman, who in turn proofed some of the details with her Amish friends.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always loved reading and creating stories in my head. As a child, I loved the Trixie Beldon and Little House on the Prairie series, and I dreamed of one day writing my own stories.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

How can I limit that to just 5?

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

My first guest(s) would be an avid reader who could share what he or she finds so magical about books. After all, without readers, there would be no reason to publish my works.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Meeting so many new friends—those I create, and those who read my creations.

What is a typical day like for you?

I try to spend the morning writing and/or researching, but there are so many distractions—the phone, the internet, the lure of social media… Afternoons have the added distraction of appointments, the welcome distraction of family, and so much etcetera. If I’m in the middle of a book, my husband will encourage me to squeeze in a couple of more hours of writing after dinner.

What scene in Plain Roots was your favorite to write?

Probably a scene in Chapter 30, when Taryn, the protagonist, hides in plain sight as an Amish woman working a roadside stand. She teams up with young Deborah, who artfully dodges the truth and keeps Taryn’s identity safe.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

My books may not change someone’s life. But they may change someone’s day—and sometimes, that’s just as important.

Interview with J Gaines, author of Amare: Bloodlines

What can you tell us about your new release, Amare: Bloodlines?

Amare: Bloodlines is the sequel to Amare: Bloodstreams. They are fantasy novels set in our world and about a man called Amias who discovers that he has superhuman abilities. He’s part of a secret race of people called the Altéré who all share his abilities but to differing degrees. Altéré boys and girls are identified at a young age by elders and then trained to use the abilities to protect the secret of their existence, and humankind.

In Amare: Bloodlines, Amias has been identified as possibly being the most powerful of the Altéré. His people are looking for him to lead them against an ominous threat from Kaden, a man who is obsessed with eradicating any challenge to his growing power. Amias is on the brink of a war he never wanted to be a part of, and must decide whether to accept his destiny, or refuse the hopes of his people.

This series of novels are books that I would have enjoyed reading when I was younger, but also now. I wanted to create a gritty world and incorporate action and fantasy and detailed fight sequences.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always loved to write and tell stories, even as a child, and I’ve always had lots of ideas for novels and short stories that I used to note down. Then, my eldest daughter Emilie took an interest in reading and I thought I’d like to write a story that she would be interested in, and also that I would have liked at her age. She inspired me to start writing.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

My top 5 books I’ve read are Lord Of The Rings, The Count Of Monte Cristo, Dune, A Dance With Dragons (it was difficult to choose just one of the Song Of Ice And Fire series), and The Hound of The Baskervilles. In this order.

Lord Of The Rings is my favourite ever book and has so many amazing qualities,I don’t feel that any book compares to the characters Tolkien created. Almost all of the main protagonists are so much more than they first appear to be, and have hidden strength. It’s the only book I’ve finished, and then picked it up and read it again. It’s that much of a journey from start to finish.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I loved the Roald Dahl books as a child, and when I’ve read them to my children I appreciate them even more. The mix of imagination and humour he brings to his books is so special. He wrote books for adult and children, and lived a really fascinating life.

I’d love to interview Roald Dahl and ask him which one of his childrens books was his favourite. Mine is Fantastic Mr Fox.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I’ve found it such an emotional journey that you can become so engrossed in. I’m a big planner, but it’s not necessarily the part of writing I enjoy. Developing the story as you write is truly an amazing thing and then both times I finished my novels I felt very emotional, in a really uplifting way.

I also love getting a review from someone in a different part of the world who has enjoyed my book. That gives me the greatest satisfaction.

What is a typical day like for you?

A typical day for me is a pretty busy one. I get up early and get my children ready for school and nursery. I then go to work and after I’ve finished pick my children up. Once we’re home we have dinner as a family and then the kids go to bed. I then make a coffee, put my headphones on with a chosen playlist and write.

It’s pretty hectic but I love spending time with my family whenever possible, and writing, so I make sure I try and do both.

What scene in Amare: Bloodlines was your favorite to write?

As I’ve mentioned, when writing both books I found that as I neared the end of them I became really emotional. I feel it’s hard not to become emotionally involved in your protagonists journey, and bringing the novels to a close, whether it’s a definitive ending or not, is extremely satisfying.

My favourite parts to write were the final four chapters of Amare: Bloodlines. When I finished them I felt really happy with the ending I’d achieved, it was just how I wanted it to be and had envisioned

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I have a large family, and before I started writing my first novel I wasn’t sure I should assign the time to it. My wife encouraged me and told me it’s never a waste of time doing something you love. I think this is very true, and it helped me to really believe in what I was undertaking and to start writing.

The Story Behind The Return of the Prince by Nana Malone

By Nana Malone

Return of the Prince is my love letter to the Winston Isles. Lol.

This little, made up island nation has been so fun to write! And all along the way, the character that has been the backbone has been Ariel, so I’m thrilled to finally write her story.

Our resident hacker, turned Royal Guard, turned King’s Knight has had her ups, downs, and set backs so she has been long overdue for love.

Because she’s such a strong but vulnerable character, I had to give her a complex hero.

Prince Tristan is the exiled cousin to the king. He’s only ever loved one woman. Only one problem, she still hates him for leaving her behind. So you’ve got a second chance enemies to lovers situation and all the delicious tension!!

I put them on one hell of a journey and I hope the readers love the ride.

Interview with S.B. Alexander, author of My Heart to Hold

What can you tell us about your new release, My Heart To Hold?

My Heart to Hold is the second book in a series that continues the story of Maiken Maxwell and Quinn Thompson. In this installment, fans will have answers to some of the lingering questions that had taken place in book 1, and they’ll also see how Quinn and Maiken’s budding romance continues to flourish despite the obstacles they face.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

I only have one. I’m reading the Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Have the courage to fight for what you believe in.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

I would find a quiet room, no TV, no sound, just me and my thoughts.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

Besides my family and friends, I’m grateful that I have the time to write books, and nothing brings me more joy and happiness than sending my books out into the world.

What scene in My Heart To Hold was your favorite to write?

One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Maiken gets bad news from his mom and the only person he wants to talk to is Quinn. She has a way of making him feel like life isn’t as bad as he thinks. The scene brings them together a little bit more and makes their relationship that much stronger.

Interview with Trevor James, author of Into Colors

What can you tell us about your new release, Into Colors?

Into Colors is the great longing everyone carries around with them but has a hard time sharing -- the longing to be accepted, loved, understood. Through the eyes of the Mire family, this longing is brought to the surface as every character is given a chance to express what they truly want and desire. Although not all of these wants and desires are realized throughout the course of the book, I wanted to give them a chance to be seen and heard.

The book is named Into Colors because of this and my desire to share and open up conversations with people that might allow us to "color ourselves in", giving us the opportunity to finally say who we are and what we truly want.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

First and foremost, the love and support of my family and friends. Without them, I would know nothing of the courage and strength I am now able to find in my life.

In addition to this, my own struggles with addiction and Bipolar have allowed me to become a more empathetic person and seek a more disciplined and honest lifestyle that is better able to adapt to and contribute to the society I so desperately wanted to be a part of when I was actively using and not taking care of myself.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

1.) Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor Frankl
2.) All I Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten - Robert Fulghum
3.) Dune - Frank Herbert
4.) Desert Solitaire - Edward Abbey
5.) Intelligent Investor - Benjamin Graham

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

This is a very difficult question. However, I would like to interview Viktor Frankl. His unique life experiences and ability to persevere and continue to grow after the camps amazes me. I would very much like to learn from him and get his opinion on many subjects and possibly some therapy!

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Writing has always been the most complete way I can express my feelings. If I do not write it down, it does not feel like it is fully me.

What is a typical day like for you?

Typically I wake up in the afternoon for my first job at Starbucks and then I will work until early morning for my third-shift job teaching ESL. In the times between I am soaking up as much time as I can with my fiancee, friends, family, and books.

What scene in Into Colors was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene was incorporating my best friend, Chuck into my book. He was my very best friend and mentor and always encouraged me to self-develop and look out for others. It was an honor to find such a natural place for him in this book with a similar role and function. It is wonderful to have people we can celebrate in our lives.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

"Don't take yourself too seriously"
