The Story Behind Just Like February by Deborah Batterman

By Deborah Batterman

Just Like February is, at its heart, a story of lost innocence, and the ‘80s have always struck me as a time of profound innocence lost in both the personal and cultural realms. They came in on a high and went out on a where-do-we-go-from-here low. Smack in the middle of the decade my husband’s friend and associate in his interior design practice sparked an idea for a new business venture. Within in months of making the decision to move ahead with the plan, our friend was diagnosed with HIV. His progression from HIV to AIDS, and the opportunistic infections that would result in his death, was alarmingly quick. There was no escaping the feeling of walking under a cloud.

These were the early days of HIV/AIDS. So much mystery surrounding what would become an epidemic. Fear and misconceptions of how it could be spread, coupled with homophobia, would reach a pitch. I would do my part to raise awareness, first as editor of a newsletter aimed at AIDS education in the workplace and then as editor of the Design Industries Foundation for AIDS (DIFFA) newsletter. I would lose more than one friend. And I would keep asking myself: how did we get from the sex/drugs/rock’n’roll ‘60s to the sex-as-death ‘80s? And what were the implications for a young person coming of age during the decade that gave us Gordon Gekko, Ronald Reagan, and AIDS?

Coming-of-age narratives take a young protagonist from innocence to experience, often via an emerging awareness of sex or death. The AIDS epidemic gave us both. A story began to take shape, centered on a girl’s relationship with a very special uncle. The opening lines would set the tone for a narrative that, I hoped, would transcend stereotypes:

“The summer I was born Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, Ted Kennedy put Chappaquiddick on the map, and my parents, along with my uncle Jake and me, set out on a pilgrimage to Woodstock. Only Jake got there.”

The charismatic gay uncle, not the hippie parents, is the one who gets to Woodstock.

Archetypes play their part in the novel: Rachel’s mother is a social worker, her father a Vietnam veteran, and what better pairing could there be to symbolize the ‘60s and their emblematic end? More to the point, it’s Rachel’s voice, in all its innocence, that would bring a fresh perspective to the changing times, not to mention the very nature of love. Playing counterpoint to Rachel’s coming of age would be a very strong-minded grandmother coming to grips with the changing nature of family, not to mention the realization of her worst nightmare.

In the same way that I envisioned a character born in the legendary summer of 1969, I couldn’t help but see the poignancy of her sexual awakening at a time when her beloved uncle was dying. The years between would be threaded by key moments in her life set against a backdrop of events that gave definition to the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. Anchoring her through it all is Jake.

Synchronicity sometimes plays its part in a novel’s publication. By no small coincidence, Just Like February would end up being published at a time when the ‘80s seem to be back, with a vengeance. And now we have a Leap Year. Of all the months in the year, February has me most mystified. How/why did February become the shortest month? What would it mean to be born on February 29th, a leap year baby? More to the point, learning that, in ancient times, it was the last month of a 355-day year and it gets its name from the god of ritual purification sealed the deal on the title of my novel. What sounds like a simile—just like February—has all the makings of a metaphor.

Over and over again we hear that facts don’t change people’s minds, stories do. It’s in the telling of stories, fictional or otherwise, that we bring a human dimension to underlying issues. In the way I was personally touched by the early days of the AIDS crisis, I could not help but be moved, even angered, by stories in the news that spoke to the bigger picture of unfounded fear and ignorance. I was haunted by the photo of a child standing outside his school holding up a placard that read: No kids with AIDS in our grade. This was a reaction to the protests against Ryan White, a hemophiliac teenager who contracted HIV via a transfusion and it took AIDS beyond the perception of a ‘gay plague,’ with its homophobic implications, which were bad enough. Who better than a fictional girl with parents rooted in ‘60s activism and a gay uncle who teaches her to see past the obvious to shed a light on how we define heroes?

Deborah Batterman is the author of Just Like February, Shoes Hair Nails, and Because my name is mother. A BuzzFeed pick, Just Like February has been named a finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, ABF Best Book Awards, American Fiction Awards, and International Book Awards.

Interview with Lauren Blakely, author of The Second Chance Plan

What can you tell us about your new release, The Second Chance Plan?

If you love second chance romances that really tug on your heartstrings then I definitely think you're going to like this Second Chance Plan. It's a story about first loves coming back together five years later and working through the challenges that kept them apart in the first place. I'm so excited for readers to turn the pages in this story and get to know Kat and Bryan!

What scene in The Second Chance Plan was your favorite to write?

I had a blast writing the scenes when they keep running into each other in the elevator, and at the office and at the coffee shop and then they text later that night. Those scenes are "getting to know you again" type of banter and conversation and they form the heart of a second chance romance.

Why do readers love Second Chance Romance so much? What about it appeals to the reader?

What really works about a second chance romance is that moment when the hero and heroine see each other again and all the feelings start to come back. That can be such a delicious moment in any type of second chance romance and it sets the agenda on how the story might play out, whether it would be an enemies to lovers or a friends to lovers, and what are the hurdles for forgiveness. Ultimately though, what's so endearing about a second chance romance is the opportunity for redemption in the arena of love. It's an opportunity to overcome mistakes, to learn together and to grow together and I believe that's something that appeals to all of us.

Interview with Colet Abedi, Author of Trouble

What can you tell us about your new release, Trouble?

Trouble begins as a story of revenge with two beautiful damaged people, but ends up being a story of true love. These two characters find each other in the most unlikely way and quickly become enamored with one another. Ultimately, I think it's really about how you can heal through the power of love.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've wanted to be writer since I was a little girl. My aunt used to take me to the library and I'd check out all sorts of novels and just lose myself in those rich worlds... I just had this burning desire to be part of the magic of storytelling.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

A Separate Peace by Jon Knowles
Paradise Lost by John Milton
Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff
A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught
Dying to Be Me by Anita Moorjani

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Jane Austen. I think I'd spend the hour talking about Mr. Darcy. 🙂

What's your favorite thing about writing?

There's a special kind of magic when you're in your little bubble. You get to lose yourself in a world that's make believe and you can go wherever or turn your characters into whoever you want. I've always been accused of being a dreamer and living in the clouds so it's really the perfect job for me.

What is a typical day like for you?

I wake up and meditate then check emails. After, I usually go for a walk then really start my work day writing and working on my producing projects.

What scene in Trouble was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene is when Trouble first sets eyes on Kerri in his club. The moment they come face to face after all the years he's been watching her... it was super sexy to write.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Be kind.

Interview with Alta Hensley, Author of Sinners & Gin

What can you tell us about your new release, Sinners & Gin?

This is book six in my Top Shelf Series. All the books can be read as a standalone but take place in the dark, wicked world of Spiked Roses in New Orleans.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My Nana always told me I should be an author when I was growing up. I liked to write stories and make books since I could. She was always my biggest cheerleader on following the dream.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

That's a tough question. I don't think I have a top 5 on books, but I am addicted to books that are considered dark romance. I buy and read those as fast as I can. I don't really have a favorite book, but dark romance is my favorite genre. I love books that are psychological, thrillers, suspenseful and twisted.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would do a panel rather than just one guest. And I would do a panel of Indie romance authors. I feel that there are several who are true geniuses and have mastered the hustle. They know the business so well, and I find that absolutely fascinating. I would ask them what is next? Because if anyone has their finger on the pulse, it is the indie romance author community.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Seeing the final product. It's so hard to get there, but when I type the words THE END, it makes the challenges all worth it.

What is a typical day like for you?

I get up every single day at 6am and begin working. I'm a morning person, so I get my best work done before noon. Quitting time for me is 5pm. I keep a pretty strict schedule if I can. I'm also a binge writer. I don't write every day. Some days are just for administrative work, or marketing, or research. Then I have my writing days where all I do is write for hours and hours.

What scene in Sinners & Gin was your favorite to write?

The ending. I can't give it away, but it ended just the way I wanted it.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I try to be a positive person. I try not to allow negativity to enter my life if I can avoid it. I am a cup half full type of person. I always try to see the good and the silver lining in everything.

Interview with Gail Mencini, Author of It Happened in Tuscanny

What can you tell us about your new release, It Happened in Tuscany?

I moved to Colorado in 1981 and soon learned about the Army’s 10th Mountain Division who trained at Camp Hale in the Rocky Mountains. Their bravery, rigorous training, and victorious battles in Italy fascinated me, which led me to devour information about them. I wanted to write a story to recognize and honor the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops, as well as my father and father-in-law, who were both proud veterans of World War II. The tale that developed in my imagination about one of these brave skier and mountaineer soldiers became It Happened in Tuscany.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I was born and raised in a rural community in Nebraska where everyone knew their neighbors and summers were spent outdoors—working, playing, or watching fireflies. My love for reading books and imaging characters and their stories germinated during those days of creating my own world.

One hot July summer in Key West, my husband and I toured Ernest Hemingway’s house. Smacked in the face with the master writer’s ghost and palpable presence, I confessed my secret desire to write books. Unlike me, my husband felt only the heat and humidity and not a trace of Ernest. My confession led to a novel that won contests, but otherwise never saw the light of day. Years of writing, revising, and rejections occurred, and then kernel of an idea, and several trips to Italy, evolved to my debut novel To Tuscany with Love.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Moon-Spinners by Mary Stewart – I read this as a young girl and fell in love with romantic suspense novels and exotic travels. My life as a voracious reader began. I started my “Europe Travel Fund” when I closed the covers of this book.

Mila 18 by Leon Uris – I list one, but in truth, anything by Leon Uris is a favorite of mine. The novel Mila 18 informed me of the courage of the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto and the horrific events and conditions that led to the Uprising during World War II. I credit this book for beginning my fascination with fiction centered around WW II.

Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow — This introduced me to thrillers, which is a genre I continue to read on vacations with my husband. His creation of this novel while commuting to work intrigued me and made me wonder if I, too, could create novels while keeping my day job.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K Rowling — I admire and credit J.K. Rowling for making readers of young adults around the world. I loved the entire series and have wonderful memories of discovering the world of Hogwarts with my youngest son and devouring each series book in succession.

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver – I fell in love with the lushness of her prose and how she makes the tiniest piece of the natural world seductive. This beautiful read weaves nature’s predators and preys and the story’s human characters together in vital and interdependent relationships.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would love to interview John Steinbeck. I think discussing the banning of his novel The Grapes of Wrath, particularly today the media is scrutinized for their choices of what and how to report stories, would be a fascinating, multi-faceted dialogue.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love getting to know my characters and hearing their voices in my head.

What is a typical day like for you?

I’m an early riser. My block of writing time starts as soon as morning rituals—exercising, walking the dog, and making breakfast—are completed. I write at either at my desk in front of window or outside on our patio. I write until my eyes are too tired for me to continue, and only break for a short lunch. The remainder of the afternoon and evening is spent on email, creating new recipes, planning travel for my husband and I, and visiting with family and friends.

What scene in It Happened in Tuscany was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene is the reader’s introduction to Will and Sophie together, where we meet cantankerous Will.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

When I got breast cancer, my writing had stalled because I let rejections affect my belief in myself as a writer. I fought cancer, determined to survive. One phrase challenged me to believe in myself as a writer. “If not now, when?”
