Interview with Karen Kay, Author of She Steals My Breath
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write She Steals My Breath?
Lately, I've been at a point in my life where I really wanted a story where the hero was, indeed, a very muscular and handsome hero, but also a very kind hero. The Native American Medicine Man could be such a person. If the man were to be a true medicine man, he understood his power came from God, or whatever it was in his own language that he called God. Because of this, they had to adhere to a very strict code of ethics, and part of that code was kindness.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of She Steals My Breath, what would they be?
"You Raise Me Up."
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Romance to both questions. I enjoy all sub-genres of Romance. But, my heart is particularly drawn to Historical, Native American, Romance.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Adolf Hungry Wolf; and "Blackfeet Tales of Glacier National Park," by James Willard Schultz
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I think the very beginning scene in chapter one, where the hero and heroine first meet each other and speak to each other in sign language.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Not really, although I might take this as a suggestion and try to adopt some training pattern of one kind or another.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Upon thinking about this, perhaps it might be that the real path to spiritual enlightenment is a very narrow path. One would do well to read about the philosophy of the Lakota Medicine Man, Fools Crow, and that one has to be strong to resist the temptation to commit an evil act.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Again, I had to ponder this for a bit. And I think it might be this: that there was, and still is, a lot to be learned about these ways of life that might be passing away under the thrust of "civilization."

Interview with Carissa Andrews, Author of Midlife Wolf Bite
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Midlife Wolf Bite (Accidental Alpha Book 1)?
Whew... this one is twofold. Number one - my PA, Jenny, was insisting I write a werewolf book. I, on the other hand, was so resistant because I'm a rebel and think I can always buck the system. Go figure! The truth was, I didn't want to write a book that was going to require a naked man's chest on the cover. They drive me BONKERS. However, a midlife werewolf book idea where the woman became the Alpha popped into my head (enter Accidental Alpha as a Kindle Vella project) and I thought I could use it to test out Amazon’s new platform.
At the time, I thought I'd play around with writing a midlife shifter book and tell no one it was me. My pen name on Vella was originally Elena Argent. But as I wrote, the story really grew on me, and I realized my readers would love it as much as I did. Plus, there was a lot of me in this book. When I started, I was going through a custody dispute with the ex (my kids no longer wanted to live with him) and he was being a jerk about it. So, I channeled a lot of that frustration into Ella. I think it's why she comes across so real. She's me, but a badass werewolf Alpha version. HA!
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Midlife Wolf Bite (Accidental Alpha Book 1), what would they be?
Ella's would definitely have to be "Bite Me" from Avril Lavigne! It's epic! For Stone, I like the vibe from the song, "Róisín" from Pa Sheehy (former lead singer for Walking on Cars).
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love my paranormal and urban fantasy, for sure. But I also do a crap ton of nonfiction reading.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I'm currently reading What the Lady's Maid Knew (Book 1 in the Rift Magic Saga) by EE Holmes, and next up after the Rift Magic Saga is Throwing Shade by Deborah Wilde
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I'm a huge Gilmore Girls fan, so my favorite part to write was the coffee shop scene where Ella went to get much-needed caffeine, but figured going braless and in her sweats would be fine. Of course, there was no drive thru for the coffee shop and she runs into Mr. Hottie dressed like a hot mess. The awkwardness was so much fun to write!
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Honestly, my only quirky writing habit is that I love to turn on my Binaural app and listen to the playlist for my given series. I can't write without my MOOD set. 😉
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
"Be the change you wish you see in the world." ~Mahatma Gandhi
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
That women are powerful on their own - even when they're a hot mess. They can be beautiful and desired and still stand on their own without needing any instalove relationships to make them complete. (Don't get me wrong, love is fantastic, and Ella certainly will have her fair share... But it's not the ONLY thing in the world.)
Carissa Andrews is the author of the new book Midlife Wolf Bite (Accidental Alpha Book 1)

Interview with Eden Pembroke, Author of Bridewell University
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Bridewell University?
I began writing this story seven years ago. The world was so different then - that looking back on that is somewhat jarring, but in any case, its genesis came from a complete lack of self-consciousness, because back then I never expected the pages to see the light of day.
I wrote for myself, on a cracked screen under a screen protector, on the notes app of my old phone. I still have those notes, although transferred to a newer one. I wrote scenes and conversations (more the latter than the former, my vision at first was a completely epistolary work, which later changed) in composition notebooks (I still have those, too) as well, during the down-time on the dozens of television and film sets I worked on at the time, totally transported but somehow totally subsuming their creative energy. I wrote on public transit, as the botanical edens of the various university campuses trickled by in sunlight, as the city skyline whizzed past at night.
At the time, I was becoming fascinated with Tudor history and dramas. I was very inspired by the chemistry between the main actors of the documentary The Lovers Who Changed History, and the main actors of shows like The Tudors. I was also inspired by the city and setting of Los Angeles, where I lived at the time, the hyper-realistic, fairytale-vibrant energy of it, and ended up marrying these two infatuations in the story.
There have already been a few modern retellings of the story I was inspired by, but none like the particular one I envisioned and created. The university setting I wrote was clearly a fantasy version of university (I have actually attended, and graduated, university, and reality is very dissimilar), but in a world where everything was heightened and fantastical, that fit to me. There's realistic elements to the fiction I've written, but it's not intended for those that want to absorb reality-- quite the opposite, it's meant to serve as the escapism that buffers reality, if only for a time.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Bridewell University, what would they be?
For Anne, Dream by Priscilla Ahn, Force of Nature by Bea Miller, Wonder by Lauren Aquilina, Get Out by Chvrches, and Gold Rush by Taylor Swift. For Eric, End of All Time by Stars of Track and Field, I Wanna Get Better by The Bleachers, Believe by Mumford & Sons, King by Lauren Aquilina, and Sky Full of Song by Florence + the Machine.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Romance, for sure. And yes, it is my favorite genre to write as well.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Royal Palaces of Tudor England by Simon Thurley, some Courtney Milan novels, and the Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn, in anticipation of Season 2 of Bridgerton.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Probably the rooftop scene and confrontation. It comes back in a really beautiful way, later in the series.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I prefer to write late at night or very early in the morning, especially when it's raining. I am usually accompanied by heated blankets, my dog sleeping in bed at my feet, several pillows, snacks, and chocolate.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
"Not everything is for everybody."
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
There are many paths not taken in history that could have been. Sometimes a thread is dropped, but that doesn't mean it never existed, just that it remains unknown and unrealized. That we can learn from our mistakes, and that nothing is ever finished.
